Hey guys, I've been lurking here for awhile waiting for the right time to start my own build thread, and now I finally have something to start with. A quick little run down, when I first joined Yotatech I had a 83' pickup. It was the second first gen that I've owned and I did some basic mods on it, it was alot of fun, but it just wasn't practical for my family size, (my wife and 2 small children) so I ended up trading it to my dad. So for a year I was without a yota, but longing to build another one that was more practical for my needs. I've always loved the first gen 4runners, so last August when I came across this 86' 4runner on craigslist for $1100, I had to get it! It has the 22RE, W56 tranny (with none functioning 3rd gear). I drove it home and later found out it had a blown headgasket!

With limited funds, my project has been sitting every since, all the while I have been planning the mods for this, and reading build threads on this fine forum, getting ideas for my own build. I was planning to replace the 22RE with a longblock from Sunwest (they are about 3 hr drive from where I live) and then eventually do a SAS. I am planning on running 33" tires and keeping it pretty basic for reliabilty reasons as it will be pulling double duty as my DD/ camping rig (lighter trails, nothing extreme). Here are some pics of it when I first brought it home.

So to bring my project to it's current status. I sold my DD F-150 that i got in trade from my dad. So I had the money all ready to order my 22RE longblock, when I came across this 85' toyota pickup, 302 V8, NWOR bellhousing adapter to a G52 tanny/tcase. It also came with a Warn winch.

So my new plans are to swap the 302, NWOR adapter/tranny, t-case and front axel off the 85' pickup over to the 86' 4runner. This is my first attempt at taking on a project like this. My funds are limited, so progress might be slow.

When I went to get the 85' pickup, it was a 4+ hour drive from my house. It ran like a champ coming home, over two Mt. passes raining all the way! It was nice to be able to actually accelerate going up steep inclines, and my wife didn't have to wait for me to catch up to her in the Durango.
Here are some pics of the 85' pickup

Well I was able to make some progress on the 4runner today. This morning I pulled the engine transmission and t-case. I also pulled the radiator, EFI manifolds, wiring harness. Tomorrow I think I'm going to start cutting off all the IFS brackets and start cleaning up the frame. One question... I have no experience working on IFS, how do you release the tension on the torsion bars? I'm thinking that it is probably a good idea to do that before I start cutting off brackets!!!??? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

Tomorrow I'm going to take the 85' pickup out on one last dump run (trying to get a little spring cleaning done on my garage!) and then it's going to get parked in the backyard awaiting to go under the knife!

Just thought I'd post up the tire and wheel combo I intend to run on the 4runner. They are 15-33"x12.50 Maxxis Bighorn MT's. They have nice lug pattern and a good tread on the side wall. They are also not to unreasonably priced, which was a big factor for me. My brother has been running the same tire for several years on his 85' with good results and they are showing very little wear.

Thanks for the kind words Terry, yeah the 4runner is in real good shape, the only rust on it is a little bit of surface rust on the front lip of the hood (just above the grill, probably from rock chips). I'm wondering if the frame had some factory undercoating applied to it, because it is still black and rust free. The pickup came from the west side of the state (by MT Vernon Wa. up by the Canadian border) and it has alot more rust on the frame and some bubbleing through the paint on the rear fenderwells, but overall not to bad.

sweet ride. I have an '88 4Runner which is my first ride. Now 4 years later (and a good amount of money later) I have a new engine and have brought the interior from torn up to pretty damn nice. Now as I am finally getting my AC fixed after 3 hot arizona summers it seems like my tranny is going out! I love these trucks but theres always something popping up. Oh well, I figure once I have a new tranny in there (which I am not getting rebuilt, I can get a new one from Marlin and install it myself for the same amount of money) the only other thing that can break on me is myself! but sweet rig, tons of potential just like mine

That sucks about your tranny going out, but it sounds like once you get that and your AC fixed your runner should be about like new, and good to go for quite a long time!

Well today I ran the 85' to the dump for it's final voyage before getting torn down. Man that thing is a blast to drive! It's like driving a 4wd 5.0 mustang, lol. Anyway after I got home it was time to TRY and get the 85' into the backyard...I'll let the pics explain...

It's actually alot tighter than it looks in the pic,(by the way the truck does not have power steering) my passenger front bumper was against the neighbor's fence, and my rear bumper was against the 4x4 post that supports the carport. I couldn't get any closer to the house because right around the corner are some cement steps that go into the house and they stick out about 3'. As I was pulling on the cherry picker and my wife was pushing on the corner of the truck, the bumper literally scraped past the the support post. but we got it through!

Are you going to use the t bars again? If not just get them really hot with a torch. You will see them twist, once they have twisted hit your o2 and blow em off.Its how I did mine lol

No, I'm not going to reuse them, I'm going to swap the straight axel out of the 85' pickup. Thanks for the idea, I'll have to see of I can borrow a torch from a friend! By the way, I like your build, I'm going to try to do mine as cheap as possible too and reuse everything I can off the 85' mostly because I spent all my budget on buying it, lol.

If its a Ifs frame you are going to have to cut holes in the frame for the tubes that hold the shackle. The frame tubes and jigs are 40$ well worth it.Also if you have questions about building the hanger,I have built a few.

Also if you cut,a 32x16.5 radiator will fit.Thats big enough to hold two 16 inch fans. They were in s10's with 4.3.

Thanks for the info Willy, Yeah I knew I would have to get the frame jigs to cut out the holes in the frame for the springs. So I went ahead and ordered some frame jigs and tubes from Trail Gear tonight.

Here is what I was thinking of doing for the front spring hanger:

I have a set of 63" chevy rear spring hangers I never used on my 83' They are only about 1/4" wider than the toyota springs, so I was thinking of puting a big flat washer (they are 1/8" thick) between the outside of the bushing and the inside of the spring hanger to fill in the gap, then cut the length of the hanger down to the width of the rectangular tubing in the pic. Let me know what you think!

I got most of the IFS out today

here is a preview of what the 33's should look like under the runner

I wasn't able to find anyone with a torch to heat up the torsion bars, then I remembered my Haynes manuel (DUH!) It took me awhile to decifer the crappy pictures and even worse directions, but I probably would have never got it done without it.

Well, I didn't get a whole lot done today, I got most of the IFS brackets cut off the passenger side of the frame

I left the hardest for last... I wish I owned a plasma cutter or cutting torch, All I have is a 4" makita grinder with a skinny wheel... It works, but takes alot of relief cuts and I used up all my cutting blades!

I also started figuring out the layout of my front crossmember.
Like I said earlier, I'm going to use some leftover spring hangers (for chevy 63" springs) and use them for the front crossmember. First I cut the hanger down to the right width

Then I notched out the 2x3 rectangular tubing for the modified hanger to set in, and I tack a piece of metal in the center for added support in the middle, and reused the piece that I notched out of the 2x3 tubing, narrowed it flipped it upside down and am going to weld it in to help strengthen that area (hopefully the 3rd pic will explain better)

I plan on getting it all welded up tomorrow. ^^^You can see in the last pic, My un-finished off-road trailer frame that is currently making a good welding table, lol

I like your hanger,it will be plenty sturdy.I dont know about what springs you have or shackles. With my nwor springs I needed the hole as far forward as possible, with 5 inch eye shackles. All homemade.I love to see someone else do as much as me,not to get store bought stuff.Keep it up.

Thanks Willy! I'm planning on reusing the front leafsprings off the green 85' mainly because that's what I have, and I don't want to have to modify the front driveline (I plan on using this as a dd and want to use 4hi in the winter without worrying about vibrations) I thought about doing a ruf pack up front, but I'm unsure of how it would handle the extra weight of the V8 & winch, plus I don't really need the front axel moved forward (yet). I'm sure I'll probably end up changing this setup over time as money allows, lol.

I didnt need the hole forward for purposes of moveing the axle forward. It needed to be moved to let the shackles work correctly.NWOR has springs, I believe in 4” and for sure in 6”(thats what I have) that are specially made for v8 conversions.Thats why I went with them,I was worried about the same thing.

Yeah, I wish I could afford to get some new front springs for this build, I already know how the ones on the 85' perform on the street (pretty stiff, rough riding, so I figure they'll be even worse offroad) because they are so flat & no arch left in them. I already know that I'll end up replacing these eventually, I just need to get this project "drivable" first and then upgrade stuff as I get the money. Highsteer is my top priority for now.

Yeah I've checked out NWOR, I was looking at their radiators, I wish they'd have their prices listed on their website tho, lol. You look like you're getting pretty close to done on you're truck, don't get burned out man, you're almost there!
