I have the stock manifolds off a ltd and I could not get them to clear the frame rails. Do they make a shorty starter for the 302?

Do your manifolds look like the one I have pictured? You need the style that dumps straight out the back, not the ones that angle down. Yeah they make shorter starters, I know NWOR sells them or maybe Jegs/Summit racing.

Radiator

Here is a pic of the s10 radiator installed and behind the grill.you will want to find a s10 with a manual,so you dont have all of the extra tranny cooler stuff

The previous owner of the pickup had cut out the grill and a little bit of the hood to make the radiator fit on the outside of the radiator core support. He was running 2 electric fans on the inside where the radiator normally would be.

This set up worked fine at freeway speeds, but not so go in town, but I definately didn't care for the appearance! I'm still deciding on what to do for a radiator. I know of one place in town where I live that can build custom ones (supposedly at a reasonable price) and I'm going to check into that, the other alternative is to go to the local pick & pulls and start measuring to see what fits. OneIwilly told me to try a S-10 4.3 radiator, I still need to check into that also. My main goal is to keep it as stock looking in appearance as possible and not resort to cutting the core support, unless I have to.

Thanks Brian, I'll check around for a S10 radiator with a manual trans at some local wrecking yards. Hey, I got my engine out yesterday, mine is already blue, wanna trade???!!!

I didn't get a whole lot done yesterday,I've been helping my brother-in-law remodel his bathroom this week when he gets off work. I did cleanup the Tranny/t-case a little more (i don't have the patience to get all the nooks and crannies, called it good enough, lol) I pulled the motor out of the 85' need to clean it today and start painting it up.

(^^^ Tranny does'nt look nearly this clean in person!!!)

I got the tranny/t-case up in position and sitting a little forward to make it easier to get the bellhousing bolted up to the motor later.

When I bought the 85' pickup, the previous owner said that he had to machine a bushing to adapt the stock toyota pilot bearing to the 302 engine. After I pulled the 302 yesterday I noticed the pilot bearing was sitting in there crooked. So I pulled the clutch assembly off and inspected the homemade bushing. I'm not sure if the bushing has worn down or if thats just the way the PO made it, but it doesnt hold the pilot bearing as good as I would like. IT stays in place, but it's not nearly secure as on a 22R/RE. I'm thinking of calling NWOR today and see if they sell a similiar bushing for the 302 swap.

Well I called Northwest Offroad this morning and found out they make a pilot bearing that fits the ford crank and has the right diameter center that fits the toyota trans output shaft, (that will eliminate the need of the PO's homemade pilot bearing bushing/adapter) they are out of stock, should have some next week... so that kinda slows my progress of getting the motor in this week, I will go ahead and order the throw out bearing from them at the same time.

I think in the long run, the pilot bearing from NWOR is the best bet.....nice work so far....Bill

Thanks Bill, yeah I just didn't trust the PO bushing, looked a little sketchy, lol.

Didn't have much time to work on the runner today, I got to go help my B-in-law work on his bathroom. I did get one motor mount mostly done. I used the old mount as a template. I cut the new one out of some 1/4" scrap.

then I used the scrap peice left over from my spring hanger (it originally was a chevy 63" rear spring mount)and I cut a 3/4" strip out of the middle and narrowed it and welded it back together

Then I tacked it together, I'll wait till I get the motor in before doing the final welding in case I have to change something.

It should be pretty sturdy, it's all 1/4" plate and will work well with the NWOR motor mounts that I have.

Yeah I think I'll use the straight design manifolds, I will eventually need to replace the passenger one because it has some hairline cracks in it.

Yeah I think it would be worth it rather than building them from scratch, I'm glad the PO already had them on the 85' so I didn't have to buy them, lol.

I am envious of your welding skills and the abilty to do it. Hoping to someday to aquire them skills.

Finding a pilot bearing that adapts two differnet brands of pieces might could be a rare or hard to find part.

Thanks Terry, I just have a little 110v Lincoln wirefeed that I picked up about 8yrs ago at Home Depot for around $350. But over those years that thing has more than paid for itself! I would love to some day be able to pic up a 220v mig and a plasma cutter! I got lucky on the pilot bearing, I called up Northwest Offroad (NWOR) that made my Bellhousing adapter that came on the 85' and they have the pilot bearing I need, just not in stock, need to call them next week and order one.

Didn't get a whole lot done yesterday. Fabbed up the other frame motor mount and cleaned up and painted the intake manifold.

I won't be able to work on the runner for the next few days, so I probably won't make any more progress on it till next week. I got some red engine paint for the engine block, thinking of painting the oil pan black.

Thanks man, at least I only paid $20 for the headers, I'll just throw them up on Craigslist and double my money, LOL.

I didn't get a chance to work on the runner this weekend, but I got a little done today. I started painting the motor. I was going to paint the block red, but after applying a coat to one side, I didnt care for the color. It looked more orange than red. Here is a pic of the paint cap and what it actually looked like

So I ended up painting the block and oil pan black. It had way better coverage and didn't look so thin like the red/orange. In the end I think I will like the black better, it hides all the blimishes better, lol.

Tomorrow im going to get the motor in place, weld in the frame mounts, and try to get the steering box mounted and possibly the shock hoops mounted.

Well i got the engine bolted to the tranny and mocked up in place. I found out that my frame motor mounts that I built are'nt going to work, they are to short, so I'm going to have to come up with something else. On a side note, I ordered my pilot and throwout bearings from NWOR, hopefully I'll get the motor mounts figured out before they get here, so I can get the motor and trans in for good.

Well i got the motor mounts figured out and one side built and partially welded into place, and then I ran out of welding wire. So I'll have to pick up some wire tonight and finish building the mounts.

On a side note, my hotwater tank sprang a leak Sunday and left about an inch of water on the floor in the basement, luckily I caught it before it flooded worse (the tank looks like it's from the 60's so I'm pretty sure it rusted out on the bottom) Anyway, I got a new tank yesterday, but haven't even started working on it because I'm trying to get my truck done before my buddies friend needs the cherry picker back... needless to say, I think my wife is a litle frustrated with the way I prioritize things! LOL

Here's some pics of the motor mount I fab up today (i didn't have any 1/4" tubing and had to use 2" x 2" square 1/8" wall tubing, hopefully it will hold up.) I'll probably add a gusset that runs down the mount and on top of the frame.

Those colors dont match at all, I have seen that a few times. Mocking up does take some time but it helps in the overall results. Makes things so much easier in the long run.

I hear you about the water tank. Never a good time for house problems but they do come along at the most inconvient time. Then the wifeys dont always understand the prioity list. hehe.

Hey Terry, yeah, I thought those colors were way off too, I think I like the black better anyway. I didnt work on the 4runner yesterday, finally bit the bullet and replaced the hot water heater. I hate plumbing and wasn't looking forward to doing it, but it went pretty well, and it made the wifey happy, lol.

Today I finished up the passenger side frame motor mount and let the weight of the engine down on them, I think they will work out pretty good, I'm still thinking of adding some gussets later or maybe tying the mounts into the shock hoops after I get them welded in.

Started mounting my steering box. I got the holes all drilled, just need to do some trimming on the reinforcement plates because they are hanging below the bottom of the frame a little bit, then I will weld them up tomorrow. The steering box ended up being all the way up against the core support, but I didn't have to cut it at all, which I'm happy about.

Here is a pic of the engine in.

And what my shackle angle looks like with the full weight of the engine on it.
