habanero's 1996 4Runner Build-Up Thread

As it was when I bought it in 05

Things were totally worn out. Knew it was time to do something when I put camp showers in the rack, went to jump off the tire I'd stood on to reach and realized my feet were lightly trapped between the body and tire! Granted, there was a lot of weight in/on it, but Doh!

So this is as it currently sits, dirty unwashed little heathen that it is.....

Sonoran Steel System 1.2 lift
Michelin A/T LT285/75r16

And so it begins.

Awww. Thanks guys!
Thule playpen clamps to the rack and locks on. It's a little tall, but the price was sweet ($125 barely used) so I can't complain and I know the camp showers won't flop out.

I wish I could do a front receiver bumper, rear w/receiver and spare carrier maybe. That's not going to happen anytime in the near future.

I've got all the necessaries for the tundra brakes sitting here on the floor (doing that tomorrow, I think) and am thinking a cb might be a handy little gadget, or at least fun.

More recovery gear next. Better skid(s) and then sliders would have to be after that but I've pretty much spent all my dough so I'll have to wait until I make more. Considering that moderate trails is the worst I've done and I don't get to do them all that much I have time.

It's been a very slow process!

Thanks so much, Molly!. I'll try to remember to holler when we head out there again. I'm not sure it'd be safe to drive past your door again without saying hello at least.
We don't stay in one place more than a day or two and I'm too slow on the tandem to be fun to mtn bike with but wouldn't mind doing a little driving or hiking.

Front before: 35"

Front after: 39.5"

Rear before: 34.5

Rear after: 39.5"

Those pics are with the 265/70r16 so add another inch to the height.

are these old shots or is this something you are doing now?

did the rear sag? was that still a problem with that year or was it just loaded down in that one pic?

the 265's make a big difference. my brother in law has a 4runner i believe a 98? minus the running boards and has 265's on it and it looks perfectly proportioned.

BTW...what does "system 1.2 covered in flu germs mean"? was that a dealer option?

Did this in early November 09

did the rear sag? was that still a problem with that year or was it just loaded down in that one pic?
Yes on the rear sag. It wasn't too noticeable until stuff went in the back....and I carry a lot of stuff. In the middle pic it was seriously loaded down and had about 120# of bike and rack hanging off the back as well. Toyota did a recall on the rear springs some time ago, the previous owner had them done according to Toyota but that was over 100,000 miles ago. The truck currently has 206,331 miles on it.

the 265's make a big difference. my brother in law has a 4runner i believe a 98? minus the running boards and has 265's on it and it looks perfectly proportioned.
Mine came with 265's and now has 285's (last pic in first post). I agree, the 265's without the lift looked good to me. At first the 285's looked a little large, but I got used to them.

BTW...what does "system 1.2 covered in flu germs mean"? was that a dealer option?
It means I watch little kids for a living and they share so I had the flu when I was installing the Sonoran Steel 1.2 lift. Can't stand laying around in bed, not at all.

Those rear coils on those runners are so well known for giving the 2nd gen a saggy ass.

And yes you do have to say hello. I am UBER slow on my mountain bike so I wouldn't mind taking it slow. Troy and I have talked a lot about a tandem. Would love to hear more about how you guys like yours.

And when IS your birthday I just made troy a chocolate pound cake, to get us through his week of freezing cold wrenching and measuring we gotta do to finish Ron!

You'll get a kick out of this web site for sure! http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/

Tundra brakes on. Weren't too difficult. Brake lines were the worst part. 'WL' calipers, 976 pads, sleeved stainless brake lines. The only modification was cutting the dust shield. Everything else bolted right on. Clearance is spare and the calipers wouldn't fit if I didn't have the 1/4" spacer.
Guess since it was in the low 40's today I won't moan too much about how cold it was!

Who is it here that makes the coolest cakes, isn't that you, Molly? I remember lots of pictures, but can't remember who.

I like the tandem on the road. It's a lot of work on dirt, but then again, my stoker's 6. Not a whole lot of power or rear traction there! I get a lot of enjoyment just sharing the ride with my kid. It's definitely a team deal, stoker's always right, communication is extremely important.

Thanks for posting the pic up Hab! The truck looks great! I think mine sags as bad as your did full when mine is empty...that's the difference in a pre-99 and post-99 for you.

Just a thought...you should paint the rack the same color as the truck! When I saw the first picture I thought it was the same color...that would look sweet. Funny the first thing I saw when I looked at the second picture was the missing cap too...that's a perfectionist for you.

With the new lift, rack, color and all that is one of my favorite 4Runners on Yotatech. Keep up the good work!

Hey Molly...my birthday is FRIDAY...but I'm not counting them anymore...

Put the stoker up front and let him steer...that way power and traction go to the rear where it's needed... could make for an interesting ride down the mtn.
