Hello Chef.. If he could send it that would be great, if not I will eventually find one. That would be great next summer. I plan on putting some removable pins on the door hinges to remove the doors, top off and roof off, that would be about as open as you could get.
Hello Nervo.., I will make something work on the drink holders, we are always drinking and driving, ( the strong stuff , like Pepsi, Coke) and getting cruise would be so nice for long trips.
I dont plan on this one going into the Dead Threads section. I still have some things to do to it and then the wife will be doing things to it out of her relaxation funds. She wants nerf bars, steering wheel, stripes, and I cant remember what all else she wants, but I will leave it up to her and help where I can.
I enjoy taking a disaster and making something of it. Wouldnt be happy if I bought a perfect one. When it is in the build up stage and isnt a daily driver I can work on it at my own speed and when I get to a standstill spot, due to difficult fix or funds, it can sit and isnt a crisis as to being down a car. That is one thing I enjoyed about this is I didnt have to get it fixed right away and when I want to relax, there was always something to do on it and not everything involved cash.
Yesterday, I got up and had a flat tire on the 01 runner and it being one that we do need, that became an annoyance. If it would of been on a project, wouldnt of gave 2 seconds thought on it. It might got fixed in 5 minute or 2 months. Now that we sold her extended cab and this one is daily driven. It wont be as relaxing as it once was. My poor old flat bed has been feeling neglected anyways.
I just feel as busy as life can get, people just need away that they can go do something that they enjoy and this is mine. If it would of taken my 2 years to get this done I would of been ok with it. We both really enjoy this one and the kids like having the top off of it in the summer so this one is going to be a keeper. It works for all of us. It really does ride nice and fun to drive.
I am working on a few possibilities that I may just buy to fix and sell so that I can have the funds to do a 1st gen runner for me to the way that I want it. Any extra funds I generate she somehow finds a way to get me to help her on her projects and the white one being one of them will keep this thread alive.
I will start another build thread on the next project and this time I am going to take better before and after pictures, inside and out. This white one was in BAD shape and now I get alot of compliments on it. That is one regret I have already is not enough before pics. I went through my thread recently and there were alot of things I did that I had forgotten about.

Been busy. Had to pickup my new door seals, and found some carpet that will work for the trunk area. It is close enough for me and for the back area it will work. Still waiting on my shifter boot and seat covers to get in.
Less then 5000 miles to got til I get in the 300k club. 4911 miles to go to be exact. Wahoo!!!
Doesnt really matter as it is looking like Monday will be the earliest that I could get to it. But they should be quick and easy projects.

I finally got it home. This is going to be one of my future projects, but it will be SLOWWWWW!! I want to do a frame off restore. I have been helping a friend work on his and have some more that I will be doing and he was selling it for parts. I asked how much for it and he said "Its Yours".
There is going to be alot of work to do one t and most of will be elbow grease. I have a 22r motor and several other parts so really dont feel I will have a whole lot into it.
I will start a build thread on this later on when I get some time and can get some better pics. For now I am going to start breaking it down and working on getting the frame cleaned, then the cab. I will go through the motor during the winter. Planning on painting it green or a tangerine orange.
I am not the greatest photographer.

Hello Outsane.. I have an odd schedule. I work the graveyard shift and my weekends are Wednesday and Thursday. I try to tinker a couple of hours after the wife and kiddos go to bed and they are at school (wife is a teacher) when I get home and I have to unwind so I get a little time before I go to bed and get up with them when they get home.
Im lucky to get 6 hours of sleep aday. My days off I have to find something to keep me busy. We have 500 channels of TV and nothing I like so this keeps occupied. Right now we have to work the different shifts as not to deal with baby sitters, but in the next couple of years they will be old enough that they can be home some by themselves and my projects will come to a screeching halt then.
Working 3rd shift is a juggling act and outside of 9-5 hours I have alot of time I have to fill.
Hello 86Toy.. Thanks for the compliment. I found and 87 Extended cab SR5 that has been sitting for 5 years. The wife wants it gone but the hubby wants to keep it. Always thought yours was a sharp body style pickup. It has motor problems and I really wanted it, maybe later but they have my number.
I try to keep my thread builds cheap. Alot of the upgrades and fixes were low to no dollar fixes. Told the wife that I only am allowing 1500 for this build and luckily I have alot of the parts. I will have to spread the 1500 over a period of time, but I also wanted to use this to get a cheap welder as I need to repair some floor pans and try learning to do some welding. Wanting to expand my skills. Anything I do sure wont hurt this truck only improve it. With my budget on it, I will need to be thrifty.
Hello Zelephant.. It has 83 on the title, but has about every part from a 79-83 on it. I am not even sure what grill is in it. If I go green, I think I will go with black trim, if I go a burnt orang/tangerine if that is the color in my head, I will go chrome. So really dont know what year I will put in. The round and square head lights will have some effect.
I am more into the body and rarity of these trucks, I know most or quite a few are into the solid axles, if it has 4 wheel it will work for me. But am curious as to how a solid axle rides. Never rode in one of these. I remember them when I was in high school. No way could I afford one new back them. I am just a few years behind. You ought to see my 2011 Tundra in 2041.lol
Hello Chef...Funny you mentined a white 4Runner with stripes. I found one yesterday needing a timing chain and rusted fairly bad yesterday on the front and rear fenders. I offered to buy it. Was planning on just fixing the timing chain, cleaning it up and selling it to help fund this and maybe one other project.
If I can get a title for my blue 86 parts truck, which I is what I would like to get going first, it will be the first one. I have everything for it and it is solid, rust free. Even has painted factory numbers on the frame. It is from Florida. It looks bad, but I could really have this blue one going soon. If I could only get a titile!!
Hello 92Toy.. I try to get something done a little at a time each week. It eventually adds up. I got somethings coming in the mail and I go pick up some carpet for the back end. I am getting it from a home carpet shop and is a shade of but think it will look great. I finally will have my interior done.Wahoo. I did have a sunvisor to come back down that I replaced so will have to do that again. Can get a truck runnign but cant keep a visor on. Go figure.
I got to play Army this weekend and if my shifter boot and seat covers come in, I wont be able to get to it til Monday, but plan on putting up some pictures of the interior with everything done. I am hoping all of these will make the intrior come toghter. Thanks for the compliment on the pockets. I was really concerned when doing them, kids really like them.

Hello Zelephant. I think I like the round lights better myself. Gives it an older look. Yeah, I am in the Missouri Guard. Thanks. Will be glad when my time is done.
I got my new door seals in and it is alot quieter. I called some dealer and was going to get them from him as I have a Toyota Rewards points and when I asked him for the part numbers, he wouldnt give them to me. So I got them from my local dealer. I could of looked them off of the net. So here they are: Right Door PN# 6786189105 and Left Door PN# 6786289104.
I got my tail light conversion kit, still need to get it installed and need a drop hitch. I do alot of pulling. Its PN# 43315.

I did get my carpet half way in. Still got to do alot of trimming and get the fastners in. Here is the way I did it. I made it a little wide and a little long and trimmed as I went.

The narrow strip is what the orginal replacement carpet was that is as close as I could get to orginal carpet. The bright red is what I used when it was badly stained and was a temporary fix.

Some times you have to seek the professonals for help. It still isnt finished but getting there and matches close enough for me. Still need to get some padding for under the carpet to help with noise and when I hope to go camping in it. Still need to get the tailgate.

Hey Chef.. I planning on getting the tailgate this week. lol.. I need to get some carpet glue. Not looking forward to get the old carpet off. I got that panel out of the salvage. It was all I could find. Other wise it was going to be me cutting out a panel and my carpentry skills are bad.
I just got done getting the wiring harness in. I bought the kit that plugs into the tail lights. It would of been cheaper to buy the pigtail and splice it in, but dont care for that. Just looking to be an electrical problem waiting for a place to happen.
Will have to say after putting in the harness, I was wishing I had just done the pigtail. I had to take out the rear windshield bottle to get to the harness on the tail lights to connect the kit.
One thing I found kind of funny. After I fixed the gas tank on this truck my second project on this truck was the tail lights. The PO had knocked some holes in the tail lights and used U-Haul bulbs to pull trailers. Here I going for the same thing, being able to pull trailers only I tried to do it right.
Truck is alot different since I last messed with the tailights. This did turn into a bigger project then I had really expected. Just getting all of the wiring throught the rubber boots, but it is done. Now I just need to get a hitch and it should be ready.
Here is the kit layed out.

Here is what was the biggest pain trying to get the wiring out of the truck. Will go back and silicon the rubber boots to keep water and dust out.

Wow, if it's not one PITA hurdle it's another, eh? lol. Good work, Terry!
I wish I had like 2 days of maybe a couple hours free time a day, right now, so I could get my seats in! GRRR! hahaha. Oh well, ....I'm grateful, anyhow, that I even have 'being busy' as a hurdle against 'other things' I wanna do...... I just NEED to get to it asap, cuz my BACK! hahaha.
I put the 31's back on..... Not a big fan of the offset, for many reasons. IT DID get even more head turns, but that's not my objective, to be honest, lol. OH, and within those couple days, I got a nasty bruise on my arm from a rock slinging up as I got on the freeway around 65mph to test out balance... OUCH! hahaha.
My back carpet needs cleaning, .... you've given me incentive to get'r'done! haha. I also need to do my front carpet.... it's REALLY nasty, ... But I can't afford to buy a kit right now, so I'll probably clean it, as well, the best I can, ya know?
Sorry, ...not sure why I'm rambling here on my truck, hahaha... YOU BRING IT OUT OF ME, MY 'DEEP RESTORATION' HOMIE! lol.

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...arWindow.shtml This page says you can get replacement relays from Radio Shack. I will eventually try it on my old one to see if it works. Would be a lot cheaper way to go. As soon as I can get some relays, I will post the results an how to solder/desolder. It is easy if you have never done this before.

I got my rear window working. Wahoo!! I had this wrote up once and went to post it and it timed out and lost it so will try again.
When I got the 4Runner it had a broken back glass. I just swapped the whole tail gate out as it looked like a Chinese puzzle in there.
When I swapped the tailgate out, I didn't have power to go up or down with the window, no rear wiper, and no rear defrost on the back glass.
Some quick and easy test are 1. Make sure your rear wiper is in the stowed position. 2. Back gate is shut good, may even want to lean against it and try your key. 3. The plug in the drivers side corner in the back is hooked up good, by your rear windshield washer bottle. 4. That the bolt/pin on driver's side, by the roll bar, is all the way in. There is a safety lock located there.
I wanted to see if my Motor was good so I ran 2 connectors right to the motor plug. It is a PITA to get that plug separated and ran each wire to a battery. Just reverse polarity to control the direction of the window.

I could tell the motor was good right away but it was really struggling to move the window. I thought it was off track, but the metal track with rollers were pretty rusty and I just greased them.
It still was struggling to move up and down, so I took some Silicone Spray and got the window tracks. This made a big difference and was the biggest problem. Works great on your door windows too.

I then replaced the Window Relay Box, I got my Rear Wiper working and Defrost but no window control. Located behind the Drivers seat behind the vinyl panel. If your rear wiper and defrost work this is some indication the box is good, but a relay is in there that operates the window so you cant completely rule it out.

I then took the Switch apart. It comes apart easily if done right. First remove the gray plug. It is the light bulb. Then pull the cover away from 2 tabs on one side and then the 2 tabs on the other side.

I then washed the button with soap and water and air dried it with air hose and used electrical contact cleaner to get the corrosion, coffee, dirt and who knows what else, out of there.

Here is another picture of how it should look before going back together. Make sure you don't lose the little white pin and the metal toggle piece. These are very brittle being 20 plus years old. On the rear wiper and safety lock, they are difficult to get separated. I just take contact cleaner and hold the switch upside down and spray cleaner in there and blow it out with an air hose.

I put some links that I used to get to this point up in a previous post. The last link says you can use some relays from Radio Shack, but I haven't tried it. I will later on with my old/bad relay.
Other things to look for is make sure your rear wiper is in the stow position, the tail gate is completely closed.
On post #361 I have a ground wire that bypasses the Cover Top Switch and Door Lock Detector Switch. #365 has a better electrical diagram view of the ground wire I by passed theses two switches.
I still haven't tried the key. I didn't use my old key lock when I switched tailgates, as it looks more involved than I want to get into. I will have a locksmith make me one.
This is a switch that does give problems. I have cleaned it and it seems to be working better. I will light the Rear Door Ajar light.

Hello Chef.. I can understand not having much time lately. I can only get a few minutes here and there. Guess if it wasnt for some kind of pain to deal with these, the reward wouldnt be so meaningful.
I have had my arm out and got hit with a hard shelled bug before and it had a little sting to it. Never a rock at 65mph, bet that was an eyeopener, probably jumped 3 feet in your seat.
Hello Outsane..You gray interior guys have a lot bigger selection. I am starting to think I have the only red interior Toyota out there. I know they made more, I just dont see them anywhere.
Hello hrt4me ..Thanks for the compliment. Your welcome. I really try to make my thread that is low dollar or no dollar fixes. I dont think web designers are worried about me taking way their jobs, but I tried to get alot of the fixes I found and done posted. If you find something else or a way of doing things that might help the next guy, let me know and I will post it in my thread.
If you go to my first post on my build thread, I tried to put some more fixes and where to find them. I am always going back and editing trying to add new or better information on different fixes. I hope your window gets fixed soon, if anything I can help with, just holler

I finally got my rear carpet finished put it in. My seat covers are to be here today or tomorrow and still waiting to get the shifter boot in the mail. I will be done with the interior at that point.
Only thing that I have left on this restore is tcase (will be getting to soon, time is the hold up) AC, and getting the seats reupholstered and this will be considedered DONE!!
Wife has alot that she is going to do to it so it will keep getting updated. She is wanting a Nerf bars, bull bar, rain guards,Grant steering wheel, stripes, windows tinted are some of the things that I know of. It will happen slowly. I still get to do the maintainace. Funny how that works out.
Soon as I get the shifter boot and seat covers, I will update the pics. Sure wish I had some good pictures of what it looked like before. Still need to do some detailing on the inside.
I did have to go back and fix a sunvisor so did get a little accomplishment done. I am helping an older guy on his Chevy and had to take care of a few things and am hoping to get to my 83 real soon. Been bugging me that I have had it for a few days and not able to mess with it at all. I am really looking forward to getting started on it.
This 88Runner thread isnt going to go away. We have decided that this runner is a keeper. It is fun to drive and a being a SUV, really rides nice. Only problem I have had with it(my fualt) was when the fuel O-ring was knicked when I put it in and leaked.
I will update what all cost were to get it to this point. I did all of the work and still cheaper then buying a used car and I know what all is in it. Besides I did enjoy doing it.
Now if I could only get the mailman to run a little faster.

hey man. agreed. nothing like knowing what you have because you have done all the work. kinda funny, when i hear a rattle or something I know exactly what it is "oh, that's the _______" versus "what the hell is that?" of a car you don't know so intimately.
shift boot. is it new? have seen a "gator boot"(or something like that) on ebay for like $30 for Joe's because his was bad, bad, bad.
