Redeth's 1989 4Runner Resurrection
#1381
Hi guys. Today i went to get my truck aligned. took a nice picture of the 4Runner.

Once i got home i installed a 12" shock in the front and this was the result.

Here is what the 10" shock looks like in the front.
As you can see it works perfectly for the front.

Because the shocks still bottom out with a bit of weight i just kept the 10" springs up in front and kept my rancho springs in the back. the rancho springs have 8" of travel length.

After checking these shocks We concluded that these leaf springs are NOT for a 4" lift. They're more like a 2-3" lift. So After all this troubleshooting we finally got down to the source of my problem! nothing wrong with the shocks at all. and they are the right size. As of right now i am just gonna continue to use the 10" Walker evans shocks up front with the 8" Rancho shocks in the rear. I was debating to send the walker evans back for some smaller size. but then thought it through... These Leaf Springs have been wheeled and wheeled broken in used and abused. I'm gonna have to replace these springs eventually anyway. So i'm gonna keep my 12" Walker Evans after all and im gonna order some real 4" lift leaf springs like i was supposed to have to begin with. I'll probably buy them off of AllPro. I've had a great experience with them and i feel confident in their products. Not looking forward to spending $800 on springs but i might as well get them now. Gonna buy the Leaf springs and get my sliders from 4x innovations while i'm at it. And im also dropping by 4Wheel Parts in Compton CA tomorrow to buy my 2 matching rims

Ughh..... Just bit the bullet spent $1106.41 on those front and rear 4"lift Leaf Springs from All Pro and the 4xInnovations DOM Rock Sliders with Kickout. Hahah sometimes Buying new stuff feels soooo damn GOOOD! but then you feel the after pain in your wallet. I know where next week's check is gonna be dedicated to hahah. Oh yea and that's not to mention i still gotta buy my 2 matching rims. They go for about $60 a piece no tax included yet. ouch.... this has been an expensive week.

Yea I'm happy we finally got to the bottom of it too. What a pain in the butt. But it was kind if fun trying to figure out the problem. Almost like detective work lol. All I know is i'ma have one sick looking rig when those springs and sliders come in the mail.

This past friday I went to 4WheelParts in Compton CA and bought 2 matching rims to complete my 4th and a spare 5th tire. Gotta say, those are some sexy sexy rims lol
Pretty much spent the rest of the weekend cleaning up my dad's garage completely. We are throwing away so many old, broken, things it aint even funny. Needless to say we turned a garage that you couldnty even walk through into a very organized garage with 2 aisles of shelving and lockers. it looks really good now. it was definitely worth helping him do that. Now i even have enough space for a little bit of my stuff.

and yesterday i went to my band mates house and picked up my set of 5 SR5 Rims with the Sport King A/T's on them. (33/12.5/15) I figured this will be my street tire set. At least until i wear all my tires out.

But because I had a stock truck I was never able to use them lol. I had been storing them in my band mates garage since I got them

I don't mind it at all. After all I got the rims and tires just given to me for free. So I don't kind paying for 2 more ya I got really lucky with those and definitely wasn't expecting them to give them to me.

Well For one. i can already tell ya, People always says you're in for a stiff ride when you SAS. i honestly think it feels sooo much smoother and ride much nicer. doesnt feel as rough on bumps either. Then again I hsd really crappy shocks in the front with ifs too lol. Ill tell ya what it feels at higher freeway speed once I get it aligned and get my extra wheel.
Thanks for that. Makes me feel a lot better about my compromise.
Can you adjust the rear at all with leaf springs? Like when empty or loaded. When I went on the roadtrip I was fully loaded and the rear could have used some support. It doesn't need it when I'm on the street or wheeling empty. I hope I manged to explain what I mean.

I will, however, well ya what AllProOffroad told me. I ordered 4 new 4" lift leaf springs and I called to find out how these new leafs will perform while loaded. They saif that the leafs are mostly meant for flexing and offroad as well for street/hwy driving. But said the truck shouldn't sag a ridiculous amount under load either. I told him I plan to carry about 500pounds more or less on my weekend trips and I wouldn't want it to sag. Amd he said these leafs should be able to hold up the weight of the camper shell and the cargo.
But a solution to the problem if I did end up getting a sag problem would be(according to them) is to get longer shackles I believe he said 5" shackles rather then the 4 we all get. Or get 5"lift leaf springs in the back. And that wouldn't require the longer shackles.
The whole reason I was asking him this was to make sure I wasn't gonna have a sagging issue. So he told me If I don't like the result I can always return and get the 5" ones. But told me to definitely try the 4"ones that I had already bought and if I get a sag then I should first try 5" shackles. And if the problem persists then they'll exchange the springs. He said people usually fix this problem by doing that.
Dude I'm stoked too. I just got an email from 4x Innovations and my sliders are on their way already. Once I get my sliders on and my proper 4" lift then I wanna go wheelin.

Honestly I don't know. As far as I know my leafs are the same as anybody else's lol. I've never heard of adjustable leaf springs.

I wonder if air bags might work. I don't know anything about them really. I've just seen them somewhere.

Only on the fly way to level leaf springs is the old school Adjustable air shock, or air bags. I'd probably go with the shocks since they are more of a plug and play solution, but it depends on your needs. Gabriel Hijacker's are rated for 1.1k but you can get air bags much more heavy duty, think the last ones I looked at were in the 1.6-2k lb range.
