Here are some mid progress pics, while I eat a late dinner.
I ran into a few snags. I had trouble finding all of the bolts for the timing cover. But here it is. I went a different route on the cover color

I liked the silver/green combo when I put it together

Seriously... at first I giggled, just out of SHOCK, lol..... but ALWAYS loved that color. Of course, I'm a CR500 dude, ..mid-80's.... ya know wha'mean? lol... But still always loved the Kawi Green! It's SICK! (no, I don't mean making me sick, hahahaha)... Love it, Zach!

hahaha. Gonna look badarse with the head on, man! Just tell me now.... Valve cover silver with green inlay? Or green with silver inlay?

I definitly know the bike you speak of haha. My personal favorite is the Yamaha Vmax but I grew up with Kawi's. My buddy across the street got me into them.
I am gonna try for green with silver inlays. It will take a while to clean it up though, its super greasy.
Parting shot for the night

Thing of beauty..... even half dressed as she is! lol.
Yeah... loved the Vmax... hard to find now. I've had 2 GSXR 1100's, a VFR1000, RD440, 2 CR500R's(fastest bastard around, man! lol), a XL650R, CB750F(79 Street Racing beauty)... and my fav bike I rode was an RG-GAMA-500,..... MULTIPLE deaths caused by that bike, lol.
Yeah, my buddy has, to this day, a CHERRY KZ750F(?) ..... It's that Green, with black and gunmetal gray and white.... HOLY CRAP, for a dinosaur? IT'S FAST! lol.

Thats alot of bikes haha. We have 3 Vmaxes here. 1 '85 and two '93's. One of the 93s had 1000 miles on it when my dad bought it in 09. They are amazingly fast, too fast. I pegged out the speedo at Sturgis last year.
Our buddy has an '82 CB900F. That thing was very cherry when he bought it a few years back. Had 5000 miles on it and not a scratch or dent in the paint anywhere.

HOLY CRAPENSTEIN! lol.... YOU'RE CLOSE, MAN!
Get that thing in there, dude!
PS> That 900F is a nice bike.... they rode really nice for a sled! lol. QUICK in the mid-range powerband, ya know? From like 30-90, ..wow!

Very cool build, I've been flipping through, slowed down and really started reading when I hit the engine rebuild part. Very few out of truck and on the stand engine rebuilds that I've found on the site that actually take a lot of pics. Only other one I can think off offhand would be superbleeders. I seriously hope you find some unexpected source of funds, and rethink using the plastic timing guide set instead of investing in the metal guide set. I completely understand the restriction of funds, but this is really the only weak point on the engine, would be a shame not to correct it when you have the chance during the rebuild. Just my humble opinion, and beyond that, sending out a salute to a man who seems to do really good work. Cheers!
Edit: since marrying into a hunting family, kawi green to me means camo, lol. That crazy bright green looks like it would glow in the dark. I really like that you left the timing cover virgin aluminum. I like the contrast it made, and might steal the idea someday.

Thanks for the kind words Dutch. I really am thinking about changing the guides. I am jus tryin to scrounge up the cash to do it. I would definitly rather have the steel ones vs the plastic ones.

Here is tonights parting shot.

I have to go down to the hardware store tomorrow and pick up two new block to bellhousing bolts. When I took it out there were two missing
. It should be running by this time tomorrow night.

You're right, ... I think it was M12x1.25(1.75)? M8=12mm bolt head, .... M10 is the 14MM bolt heads, ... M12, your bolt, is the 17MM bolt heads. (except for the few on the bell housing that are not that big, lol. Those are M10 bolts..... Man, MEMORIES! .... We're both gluttons, aint we? hahaha.
PS> I found it ONLY at Lowes, right length, etc. Home Depot did NOT have it.
Best wishes on the bolt hunt! lol.
