Z's Confederate Toy's 1987 Rock Rat Build

I got this '87 on Monday for $900. It has power steering, A/C, and cruise control. It needed brakes, and a water pump. Once dug into it the inner and outer bearings needed replaced along with the inner axle seals. We went ahead and did the spark plugs, cap and rotor, plug wiress, oil change (synthetic), all new coolant, and a Optima Red Top. Here are some pics:

I like the "real way" of spelling Toyota

The cruise control unit, has anyone ever seen this? I have never come across it.

Driver side view

New driver side rotor and bearings (bearings not visible...duh)

The cruise control knob

Driver side rust in bed, not bad at all compared to my '85

Tailgate, it does not open, dunno why. I will investigate tomorrow

The passenger side spindle, will finish tomorrow. after I help my buddy fix his Jeep

I have to go see the Toyota dealership to get some parts the local parts store does not have:
The six hub bolts
Outer hub gasket x2
Hub c-clip x2
Caliper mounting bolts x2

The kid I got it from did not know how to take stuff apart at all!!!

I got her running tonight!!! The brakes are bled, rims torqued, the heater control switch has been replaced. Took it for a test drive around the neighborhood, there is a grinding sound in the rear (I think the right read rim is rubbing the drum), the idle needs to be advanced (it dies when coasting), I think it needs new shocks. Otherwise, it is great! While I was bleeding the breaks I was looking around and noticed the frackin left rear shock is missing the shaft, I'm pretty much thinking its not supposed to be like that.

The broken shock

Another shot of the broken shock

The truck finally out of the garage

We got like 8-10 inches of snow in the "blizzard" yesterday.
Can anyone spot the deer in the 3rd pic? There were actually 5.

Took the truck for the first real drive, runs amazing. Two things though, it backfires when I let off the gas and there is a grinding noise somewhere. I checked the the temperature of the rear axle shafts, the drums the rims, the diffy, and I also checked the front diffy and the rotors. Nothing was overly hot, the only thing I could think thats left is a worn out U-joint or drive shaft. Seemed to get good mileage, plenty of power, tight tranny, 4wd works smoothly. Now to get tires, shocks, CB antennas, new stereo deck, basically the cosmetic stuff. I am thinking about an SAS though, my dad beggs to differ that IFS is better than solid.

I asked him why he thought that and he said "Why would Toyota switch from solid to independent if it wasnt better". I said what ever old man. I decided to do a SAS, but mat not go Toyota, Im thinking about using a Dana 30 out of a Early Bronco (since I have it just laying around).

Was attempting to get to Denver to pick up smore parts but since the blower motor is out the windshield was fogging up quicker than I could wipe it off. Since I couldn't see I just went back home. Before I did though, I couldn't help to play around in the parking lot!!! (the pictures are from my phone , thats why they are sideways)

thats a good looking truck for 900. good progress. with the grinding grab your drive shaft and see if the pinion has come lose. had that happen to my one ton ford. pinion came lose. started as a little noise. then one day it just went bad. lost the hole inner bearing. just an idea.

Ok, I'll check it out thanks.

Does anyone know where to get a a cheaper Weber conversion kit for the 22r? Which one would I use? I am also going to do an EGR delete kit, since I live in the mountains where emissions are not necessary.

I'm thinking about painting the truck OD or snow camo.
