Ignition Issue - from a new guy

Hi all, glad to be a part of this forum…

I just bought a 1994 4Runner - 3VZ-E; manual 5 speed with 265K. It’s in great condition and am using it as a rolling resto for me and my 15y/o son to get some bonding time, and for his 1st vehicle.

Issue: the truck has power (battery good) but occasionally it will not crank. When this occurs I will switch off the ignition, then back on. Sometimes it cranks (strong crank, no issues) but, other times it won’t crank. Again all lights are on with power flowing.

Received the following OBD codes:
12 - No G or NE signal to ECM for 2 sec or more after STA turns in
14 - IGF signal from igniter is not input to ECM for 6 consecutive ignitions

What I’ve done thus far:
1. switched out the Clutch safety starter switch
2. New plugs and plug wires

would welcome any suggestions to rectify…thanks for your time…

This sure sounds like a problem in the ignition switch (behind the ignition lock cylinder). The easiest way (I can think of) to diagnose this is to remove the starter relay (under-hood fuse box) and put a test light in the contacts that would drive the relay coil (the top of the relay should show which pins are which). It won't crank with the relay out, so you can carefully try the ignition switch to see if "sometimes" the test light doesn't.

I wouldn't worry about those diagnostic codes until you can get it cranking reliably.

I bet those^^^ were good parts. If they were the defective parts, you would have already fixed the problem. Pls see signature.

Please check if your starter solenoid CONSISTENTLY works when you apply 12V directly from battery to its control pin as shown on my post here:

Then, let us know what you are working with.
Is your starter relay in the engine compartment or is it in the driver side kick panel?

Starter Relay in Engine Compartment?

Starter Relay (green) in driver side kick panel?

There's a good chance this applies to your issue:

Sorry for the late reply…life got in the way. I am just getting back to looking at this issue.
1. Ignition switch checked out good
2. My starter relay is in the engine compartment: pin 5 is hot all the time with a white wire; pin 2 is wired black with red stripe; Pin 3 is black with white stripe and is eventually mated in the solenoid. Pin 1 is Black with red stripe.
But…
can anyone tell me what this is:

The Blue covered wire on this thing goes to the negative battery cable with a white wire spliced to the passengers headlight connection the black wire under the blue wire is spliced into the Solenoid connector (Black wire with White stripe that goes to Pin 3 on the starter relay). That brown rectangle is a dirty rubber cover over a toggle switch. There is no writing on this component.

Here is a larger view of that component on my firewall for location perspective.

Rad4Runner I have not I have not yet checked to see if my solenoid consistently works when wired to the battery as I am just getting back in the fight but will do so this weekend. I just wanted to update on the little I have done this far to get your alls comments…thanks much

Oh, and here is a picture to show how the blue covered wire for the component on my firewall is spiced into the negative battery cable. It is grounded to the fender and then that dirty white wire runs into the passenger’s headlight connection
