Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. On my 4th toyota; found a 1988 in perfect condition and couldn't pass it up.

Completely mint truck, but have recently been having starting issues. About 1 in every 15 starts, it has trouble starting the first time. I have to let off starting it, wait a second, and then turn the key again (to which sometimes it still won't start for a little). It ALWAYS eventually starts though, and has never not started. Every once in a while when it is having trouble starting and I finally get it started up, it will idle low and almost die for a couple seconds, and then get back to normal.

Any help is much appreciated! I am taking the truck on a long trip next week and would love to get the problem resolved to settle my mind.

Can you hear your Fuel Circuit Opening Relay clicking off once you let off of the ignition? if you dont hear any clicking after letting off the ignition i would check that circuit opening relay (COR)

Just looked up what that was, and it sounds like the problem. Would I have to replace that? Or would there be an easier fix?

 

Replacing it is simple. It should be located in the passenger side kick panel above the ECU. Can you hear it click off? If you can then it is working. It's just a small black box. If you are replacing it I can give better directions

 

Also forgot to mention, every once in a while while this problem happens, I see a small thing of smoke come from around the airbox area... Could this be because of the green/yellow wires referred to here?

Would it be a pretty loud click? And would the sound be coming from the passenger side kick panel?

 

Not sure about that green yellow wire. Didn't know you had a 22re in it. I don't know anything about those specific engines. That guy sounds like he knows what he is talking about. Though in regards to your question I think it very well could be that relay. That sounds like a ground under the filter box. Check to make sure it's secure too

 

And the clicking Is definitely loud enough to hear after you release the key. It should be coming from your passenger side kick panel though not sure of the locations on the 22REs

A problem well-stated is a problem-half solved already. 22RE? (No info on signature).

By "starting" problem, does mjans813 mean
1) Starter has trouble cranking? Or
2) Does engine crank but there is no combustion.

If 1:
C.O.R. has absolutely no effect on that. Don't mess with the C.O.R. See cranking system explained on my sig. See C.O.R. explained here.

If 2:
Possibly no fuel. Then, check fuel system including C.O.R., and injection system
Also possibly no spark. Then, check ignition system.


If having trouble cranking the starter, you would actually still hear the C.O.R. click (contacts closing) when you put in "start" position. When you release ign switch while there is no combustion, because there is no airflow C.O.R. will de-energize, making that other click. C.O.R. does not affect cranking.

On the 22RE wire connecting the second coil of C.O.R. to the Air Flow Meter is green. When there's airflow, AFM contacts close, connecting this wire to ground and keeping fuel pump running, as explained on JustAnswer website.
