Question Newbie with 1985 22r piston rings question...

Hello. Have been watching the site for awhile now, and just decided to join cause i had a question about a truck I may be purchasing...

Its a 1985 4x4 standard cab 5 speed 22r....solid axles, brand new 33's, new weber carb distributor and a couple other things...BUT..when guy put on the carb it was set wrong, dumped fuel in motor and he says it friend piston rings. The truck is rust free on the body, and one minor spot on frame. It is a nice looking truck and is exactly what i want.

The question is...the guy wants 1200. I think its a little step cause it does not run....he said when he parked it it had serious blowby issue and oil was blowing out of the crankcase breather. So does that mean rings are fried? Would it be worth buying, selling weber carb, buying good used carb and rebuilding motor? What all will i need to do new rings besides honing brush and rings? Any help for the new guy would be appreciated...i really want this truck!

Offer 1K. Tell him its a rounder number that sounds better. He will take it. I have an 84, I love it to death. I paid 1500 for it, and granted it did have issues, but they are all mostly fixed. But, I will tell you this. These trucks, and the money you can spend on them, is very addicting. But yeah, if the truck is cherry other than the motor, snatch it up. And welcome to YT!

Compression test first, then try and start her up, he might have forgot something. Check it thoroughly, might even be something small. Check the plugs as you pull them too, you can read a plug. Google "how to check spark plugs", it should pull up what signs to look for.

Make sure you pull them one at a time so you don't mix up the wires and have firing order issue's that said if the rings are indeed shot You have your first project and there's lots of info and people here that can help you redo the rings.

Quick guide to reading spark plugs

1.If there is no issue the plugs should have a light brown almost hot coco like look to them

2. If they are black and sooty they are running rich to much fuel

3. If they are gray or white then they are running lean lack of fuel needed to run proper

If this don't make since I am sure you can GOOGLE it and see pictures to help you get a better idea of what I am trying to describe to you.

I'd do it in a heartbeat....by the way go back with Hastings rings only....cheap rings can become your next headache....they may not be easy to find but will be definately worth it

Hey man, sounds like a cool truck. if its got blowby, and spitting oil, I wouldnt condemn the rings. Sounds like something was installed wrong. Or someone forgot the rings alltogether. Even if they were really worn, it would burn a ton of oil, not spit it everywhere. But yea, try a compression test that would be your ticket.
