Since I cant afordd to lift the 4Runner, and get better tires, right now to help me from getting stuck, Im gonna get some recovery pionts for when I do get stuck.

Where can I get some Shackle hangers/Shackles for cheap? Cheap as in <$100 would be awesome.

Also, aside from a tow hitch shackle hanger, what could I use as a recovery point out back?

 

get some towhooks and mount them to the frame.....

depending on what the rated strength is, you can get D shackles at the hardware store.....

 

agreed - $8 dollar tow hook at any autoshop is what I have for recovery point on back. Used it several times (to pull people out)



or for a few more bucks get one with a clip so the tow strap won't fall out.

Shouldn't have to - there is a stock "loop" If I remember correctly already attached to the frame - just take that off and put this on. Or there are already holes. I can't remember. All I know is I definately didn't drill into my frame.

You could get these from Warn for around $18 each and run them through the "loops" on the frame, requiring no drilling.



Or go to your local boating store and look by the anchors for some cheaper galvanized shackles. There's a Boaters World about 50 miles away from you in Danvers if you're up for the drive.

 

WARN also sells a receiver shackle...that will run you clost to $40. I got mine from Cabela's.

Go to TSC. You can get 20,000lb rated weld-on shackle hangers for 9 bucks. I've welded these shackles to my flatbed that tows a huge bobcate and tractor. I also have these same hangers on my bumper. I'll post pics if you are interested.

EDIT:I check out their site, search shackle hanger and shackle mount, didn't find anything-any idea what they call 'em? Maybe I'd just have to hit a store.

 

Ian, yes Tractor Supply. They have them in their retail stores for around 10 bucks or something. Stout shackles, I Arc welded some onto a flatbed work truck and crank the pi$$ out of chains while strapping our equipment day in and day out. They won't break.
The shackles were in the isle w/ the tow straps and winches.

I made my own receiver shackle hanger a few years back:

 

while the ones like roger has and warn sells are kinda cool, they are a complete waste of money IMO, if you have a reciever hitch, just put the loop into the reciever and then put the pin through the loop.

 

On my bumper, I have deep receiver pins, so it is hard to get the strap shoved in that far (my pins are 5" back vs. 2.5" standard). Plus there is the worry of the sharp edge of the end of the receiver damaging the strap on angled pulls. Also, sometimes there is no loop available or you need to hook up something other than a tow strap, so a shackle is a nice thing to have available. But yes, the hitch pin through the strap eye is often all you need.
