1987 Blinker to Turn signal conversion

Hey guys brand new to the forum am looking for some help.

So i just picked up a beater of a '87 4runner to pretty up and im starting small. First thing was the guy had zip tied the original turnsignals onto a Smitty built bumper and it looked like s***.

So I found a fairly simple mod for a 1st Gen taco and it looked like it was gonna work, wired the hot blinker wire into the ground wire of the marker light and it powered em up fine.
Next was to swap the flasher module to something different so I grabbed an fl-12 from O'Reilly's and had to do a little extra wiring to get the flasher module to hook into the plug in. And that seemed to do the trick (normal blinking as opposed to the rapid fire that it was doing before the swap),but now the right turn signal still won't show up on the dash.

To wrap up, anybody tried going this route with a 1st Gen runner? Any tips or tricks for the new guy?

A problem well-stated is almost solved.
Did you omit any information that we should know?
Rapid blinking was probably because of a burnt turn signal bulb.
If too many different, unusual parts and modded wiring give you issues, just restore to stock
If you want to use LED's get a proper flasher that plugs into stock socket and works with LED's - search this forum.

There wasn't a burnt bulb I went around looking. I think I just overloaded the stock flasher when tying the blinker into the corner light wiring, didn't blow any fuses just can't figure out how to get the right turn signal marker back on the dash.
But I did do some searching for turn signal-marker light conversions but I couldn't find anything similar to what I did.
I'll get back to searching though thank you

You did not say whether the turn signals worked normally before you did the mod. You only said they look like s**T.

When blinker turned on, the hot shorted to ground and burnt something. You need a multimeter to troubleshoot. Then, if you want to use marker to double as blinker:
Proper way should be:
1) Snip negative side of marker from ground.
2) Take that negative side of marker to hot of turn signal.
Make sure:
1) You have at least one standard incandescent/halogen bulb on each side to ensure this works.
2) The marker light, IF LED is not polarity sensitive, or else it will only work when tail lights are on.

I have this for my front parking lights now...

Okay now I'm following. Sorry, the blinkers worked they were just zip tied to the bumper (after market). They didn't reach all the way through the bumper and just looked terrible. So I removed the blinkers but what you're saying gives me something to go on now.
Thanks for the help I'm gonna start ripping into it tonight to see what I messed up

Jeez that looks like a hell of a lot of work! Found your blinker mod in there I may have to go back to stock bumper and go that route cause I'm not getting anywhere with what I got.
Thanks for the reply I really do appreciate the help!

To anybody following, got it all worked out. (At least for now I do)

So to sum up, to swap your blinkers to your marking lights and keep your marker lights full time,

1. Remove positive from blinkers,
2. Remove ground from markers
3. Wire positive from blinker into ground side of marker light
*DO NOT TRY THEM YET WITH STOCK FLASHER ( this is where I screwed up originally)
4. Disconnect turn signals entirely. Hang excess ground wire out of the way in case you want to go back to stock
5. Remove factory flasher and use new (I used an fl-12, others probably could work but I'm new so I don't actually know anything)
5. To use the fl-12 it will not plug straight into factory plug in for flasher. Requires a little wire (I used 16 gauge) and two male and two female connectors.
6. Wire the 3 prong into the flasher, (the fl-12 only has two prong, see picture for what worked for me)
7. All done, or should be unless you screw it up at first like I did.

I blew the bulb on blinking indicator on the dash. Pulled it out and swapped bulbs and it works exactly as I hoped.
Hope this can help somebody along going forward, and feel to reach out if my write up isn't super clear or if you see any issues I may run into in the future.
thanks guys!
