On the power steering. Here are some handy links to see if you want to try a rebuild or by a re-man or pull a junkyard part.
This one rebuilds the older style box. I suspect you have the newer (better) style.

What the FSM says about the newer style box

What the FSM says about the older style box. This FSM is a PITA to use as it isn't indexed. PS is from page 1121 to 1157 and gearbox is 1121 to 1139

A successful seal replacement on a newer style box. OP Toyota 1 could be a valuable resource if questions arise.

I find it interesting that the FSM procedure for the newer boxes doesn't mention the recirculating balls at all. Yet in Toyota 1's thread they are obviously still part of the deal.
Happy reading.

It's been a few months, but I dig table mesa. I was planning a trip soon to take the kiddos to the old mines (can't remember the name of the "town" where the foundations are still standing)
Crown King is my favorite run though. Last 4runner was 2wd so I haven't been up to CK in a few years.

I did mine and used that same company. Worth it? That's probably something you can never prove. I didn't see how it could hurt and I wasn't interested in doing the job twice.

I think I am going to get the gears cryo'd just for that added peice of mind. Which means I'll be another week or so before the truck is ready for anything.
As for the steering gear box, I have a rebuilt one - I traded my extra Downey biknini top for it straight up. The guy I got it from buys them, rebuilds them then taps them for hydro assist so I completely trust the rebuild. I just need to get under there and do it already.
It started doing that not-starting thing again this week Grr!! But I know the battery was bad - I tried to jump it with my car, left the cables on for 30 minutes and nothing. Autozone confirmed the battery was bad and I got a new battery - for free - last nite so hopefully that will do the trick. If not, I have a rebuilt starter to install but I know that job is going to suck!
So do we know anyone with an airconditioned garage we can meet up and wrench in?

Good deal though on the new gearbox. That will make the swap much more straightforward. Plus, you'll have the old one to fiddle with for fun/practice.

Wouldn't that be sweet!! While you're at it check your PS hoses for signs of age/cracking. They will have to be removed anyway for the box swapout and believe me, you don't want to deal with all that PS fluid twice if you can help it. Check your pump as well for any signs of leakage. That one is a bit less messy if you do it later on though so not as critical. ( Edit. My experience is on the 22re and the 6cyl could, as usual, be trickier)

And I hadn't really thought much about the old box - I can mess with it and do my own rebuild or have it done or something and keep it for a spare like all the other junk I have laying around.
I contact Nitro Gears about having them Cryo'd and this is their response:
We do not recommend additional treatment to the gears as they have
already undergone state of the art computer controlled heat treating.
We have seen failures due to inconsistent hardness from bad cryo
treatments, and advise against it.
And I asked Will at Sierra again about it and he strongly recommends I don't do it so I guess I'm not going to do it. So when they finally show up I'll be dropping the truck off and Sierra is going to take care of it. Most likely today.
Will also said they do the initial heat cycle part of the break in of the gears - I just need to do 400 miles of normal street driving then bring it back to them for inspection.
I might know someone with a cooled garage we can use - its not full AC but he has 2 of those window units plus 2 swamp coolers - I bet we can get the garage below 100*

Jeff- I'll probably take you up on the offer, just shoot me a text with a date n time. I feel as though some of the info with the new gears may have not been as thorough as the link was. But at least it raised the question and if nothing else, it gave BLKNBLU a reason to chime in
good to see you're still here BLKNBLU. Good call on those lug nuts for Nate, Jeff. I could've sworn I didn't give them to the new owner...oh well. So this cooled garage idea is making me wanta join in on the fun. I'm down and will show on the day of said wrenching meet...keep me posted please.

well, gonna have to get under the truck this weekend and do some investigating. Passenger side seems to sag a bit, and it's now pulling the same direction. tire pressure is 35 all around. I'm hoping that it just needs an alignment, but for some reason, I suspect a bad hub.
#658
I'm not too worried about it. after talking to some friends about the symptoms, they agree that it sounds like a hub issue. I'm just glad manual hubs are fairly cheap. I think i might take this chance to upgrade to warn hubs as well.
anyone know if I should do both at the same time, or does it not matter?

Warn hubs are not an upgrade. The Aisin hubs that are OEM are your best bet. Do you have manuals now? Or autos? I'm assuming you have manuals since you are talking about getting just one. Take your current ones apart and check them out. There is little to go wrong with them. I'm also not clear on how hubs would cause either of the symptoms you mentioned. Get us some more details before you part with any $$.
Edit: Here is a pretty good thread for hub rebuilds. The thread also has some good links to other really good resources and threads.

Thanks for the link, I'm still new to 4x4, and figured warn set the industry standard. If it's the hub, and can be rebuilt, then I'll go that route.
