suspicion confirmed. jacked up the truck, put it in 4wd, spun the drive shaft, passenger wheel spun with the hub in the "free" location. time for a rebuild if possible.

I picked up the truck a day early from Sierra Expeditions after getting it regeared with 4.88's. I have to say I am 110% completely satisfied with how it drives. On the 101 I was going about 78 mph at 3000 rpm's and it had plenty of Get-up-and-go when I accelerated. I am very excited to get back into the swing of things after taking like 8 weeks off from wheeling.

According to Will - and Nitro - there is only a 100 mile cautious brake in period - no heavy loads, not drag racing - just casual driving. Then after the first 100 miles it is ok to drive as desired - including wheeling. I have to take it in to have the gear oil changed at 500 miles which I guess is standard. So putting 100 miles on it before wheelin will be super easy, I was prepared to try and get 500 miles in this weekend; I'm sure I can do 100 miles very quickly Saturday.

I might take a quickie run out to Butcher Jones Sunday if anyone is down for a run with me.

Thats the plan - to go sometime Sunday, when ever - no solid plan just yet other than I want to go. part of it depends on if it rains or not, cuz I'm not a big fan of having dirty street crud all over my or the inside of my truck.

I'll post up again between now and then.

I wish I had my truck running by then! Let us know how the gears work out on the trail.

Wow this thread is active! Hey guys! I bought an '87 Pickup a few months ago, been fixing a few things on it... needs quite a few more before it's mine, but I'm kind of looking for somewhere to goof off this weekend. The truck is a 22R with 33's, 3 in body lift, and stock gearing. I'm very new to 4wheeling (the old man had a Range Rover back in the day), but have already been to Ouray, Colorado with it and had an absolute blast.

The truck is my only vehicle that has 4 wheels so don't want to break anything too badly, but anyone have anywhere close to Tempe that they'd recommend for a fun day trip?

Nice truck Ian!

I will most likely be going out to Butcher Jones on Sunday if you want to roll with us. There is nothing super hardcore out there, but plenty of fun stuff to play around on.

Here are a few pics from the last time I had my 4Runner out there:

If you want to roll with us, give me a call or shoot me a text - 480 209-5815

Jeff

I don't think I'm going to make it tomorrow - I have too much to do to get ready for Sedonafest next weekend, plus I don't think I'm going to have time to clock enough miles on the truck for the brake in on the new gears.

The next time I plan on taking my truck out is going to be the 27th and/or the 28th.

Mike - Ian said he might go without me tomorrow - shoot him a PM

Sorry guys

Mike- I'm still headed out... I don't know details or how it works out there, but figure I'll just head over mid-morning and romp around for awhile, hang by the lake and head out whenever.

If you want send me a text or give me a call... sending you a PM as well. 970.215.8189

Dang that place was cool... 90% of the other vehicles out there were 'yotas today (didn't expect this). Almost got myself in trouble a couple of times cause I have no idea what I'm doing, and even scared some of the other wheelers out there (kinda was expecting this).

I'll shoot to keep the 27th open cause I'm down to head out there again

so, have any of you guys done any brake upgrades? I think that's going on the list of stuff to do next weekend.

the g/f is going to be in Vegas so I can gladly run air tools all night with out her complaining lol. so far, I have replace/rebuild a locking hub, some brake upgrade, fix a power steering leak, fix an a/c leak, and fix a coolant leak (a/c and coolant leaks are on my DD).

as for brakes, I know Hawk makes great pads so I'm going to see if they have an application for the runner. thinking about stainless lines in the front too. has anyone had any experience with either?

In response: The stock brake lines should be plenty for just about any and all braking needs with stock wheels and tire sizes. The Braided stainless steel lines wont allow any expansion like the rubber items do which would lead to a hard feel to the pedal. If you're really set on SS brake lines then do em' but unless you're rolling on 35's or greater, I would consider them over kill. Depending upon application (your vehicle if it's 4cyl) you can always upgrade your master cylinder to the V6 master along with the calipers too. With this, you're gonna need the V6 rotor's as well....if I remember correctly. As far as "Hawks" are concerned, I use them on my 04' F150 5.4. However, with our vehicles, I'd recommend Performance Friction. Their a Carbon Metallic pad that I've used for years...here's a link: http://www.performancefriction.com/Parts-Finder.aspx

You'll have to go through and find the right part no.s for your application. I use to do alot of snowboarding and the regular pads I used would start to heat up and smell...1/2 way down the mountain...no I dont like riding the brakes but the midgrade items from autozone were to blame. Put PF pads on and I put them to the test on the next trip down and was really pleased. No noticible brake fade or brake smell on the test run and the hotter they seemed to get, the better they seemed to work. Their pads went on all of the vehicles I had from that point on. I'm testing the Hawk's out and have eaten through 1 set of rotors on the F150 already. Those rotors are over $150.00 a piece...Ford incorporated the wheel bearing unit in this design...so mucho money to replace each time. Once this set wears out, I'll be going after the PF pads as replacements and replacing the rotors again. Hope this helps out a bit.
