If it worked on your old cluster, chances are its good. Only other thing I could really suggest is to make sure the contacts on the ribbon connectors and that the new guage doesnt have some dust or build up in its terminals.
I would try a really good cleaning and reseating the connectors.
Also, do the years match for swapping clusters? I got one and since mine is an 88, I have read that only an 87 or 88 would work. Dont know how true it is, but might be something to look into. I thought 84-89 were interchangeable for the most part.

ok so a picture of my truck with paint ideas isnt much so i went out and ended up taking part of my truck apart.
removed the front bumper, grill and all the ac stuff from the rad. support to the fire wall.

when i took the grill out my driver head light fell out so i had to reattach the spring and set ir back in place with the adjustment screws, maybe one day i will adjust it haha.
also im thinking of painting my grill flat black, opinions?

Flat black grilles
This is one of my favourite 4runner's ever. I copied this from one of the post your pic threads, can't for the life of me remember who's it was, but I plan on doing the same grill, and if you're wondering about black grills this pic should help you decide. I personally love it.

You are making progress. I wish I could find a good program that you could use for a paint scheme. I tried looking on the net and havent had any luck. I am sure their are 50 programs out there.
I tried what you did and it gives you an idea. Looking great.

ok got some work done to the scav and i figured out why my charge lit would stay on but was super dim.
after putting a differant alternator on and my light went away i tested the newest-to-me one. and found a differance in the 2
the 1st one when tested said it was good but put 20-50A
while the second one tested good also but puts out over 50A
so with reason i have come to the conclusion tht the first alternator was putting out less then the 40A the stock yota one did and causing the light to come on.
but since the alternator is still good and works im going to keep it as a spare just incase, at least i know it will get me home.
after tht i installed my radiator, hoses and water and let it warm up. and it holds water with no leaks so. also had to adjust the tps sensor thankfully i have z-shaped screwdriver, so i didnt have to remove the throttle body.
now all tht is left is to finish bolting up my exhaust to the manifold and set the timing.
o yea i think my gas gauge works. because now its closer to 3/8 so im wondering if it just stays at the postion always. i dont know but its not to big of a deal right now.

Beautiful little girl twisted. My original chrome grill was painted the same green grey yuck as the rest of the truck. I bought a couple black ones thinking I might use one but I really want chrome. Anyway yours looks great good job

so i got more work done today.
drove the truck in the shop and raised it up. finished bolting the exhaust to the manifold then i lowered it down and put the power steering belt on and set the timing. after setting the timing i let it run and moved my hand along side of the exhaust to feel for any leaks and i didnt feel any so i think im good. now all tht is left is to take it to the smog, i should be doing tht sometime this week.

something i forgot to post.
i got some scrape tubing tht was used to make a swinging chair to go on a padio. tht i think im going to use to build a soft top frame. think i will start from scratch. once the weather gets nice i can take the top off and start doing some work to it.
