Sorry to hear about your illness. Hope it goes a way soon. It can ruin a good day.

Here is wishing for a good month, I read some where you guys in California are in the $4.50 plus range for gas. That will put a damper on the budget. Maybe you can come across a good deal on an alternator and radiator.

Hope things work out alright for you.

yea were im at gas is at 4.25 and slowely climbing.

as far as the parts i should be getting a used alternator and radiator for free. my friend is getting a 2wd yota for the engine for his 4wd and doesnt need the radiator and alternator out of it. so for helping him gett his 4wd running ill get it for free.

in other news i was feeling well enough yesterday with nice enough wheater tht i was able to start working on my soft top. will have pictures up later on tomight.

soft top starts

as i stated earlier i have pictures

the angled metal tht the stock top bolts go through and bolt to stock holes.

this is where i am thinking of putting the hoops

i had to bend the angles some and some more aftyer this picture. they were at 90* now they are at something like 70*

here is how they look with the back of the cab

took the plasma and cut some metal shorter. thes peices were then tacked on to the base angles

i then took a grinder and got rid of those bumps to make it smooth
(no pic)
bolted the sides down and set the top pieces on and hung the mesh

tht was all yesterday. to day i cut the top peices to length and smoothed out all the bumps on them. then the weather got windy and cold. when it warms up i will take the top off and bolt the sides on then tack the top pieces on

Its looking good. I am thinking I want a soft top. I am sure it would be nice to have. I have never removed a hard top and am guessing its not fun.

May go your route later on. Keep up the great work. Glad your feeling better.

if you ever remove your top, their is 2 dowels on 1 on each side right in font of the very last bolt in the back. if you remove those when removing all yor bolts it makes it 10x easier to remove it. i only have 4 bolts in my top since feb. 2 in the back and 2 going into the cab, top stays on and their is no noise plus it becomes so quick to remove the top. unbolt the 4 bolts and slide it off the back. and watch your rear end lift 2-3in

mesh top

so i got alot more work done today.
tacked the top bar to the sides

threw the mesh over it

the mesh is held under the hoops and the front part for right now goes through the door and has a bungie cord from it to the roll bar.
.
how the out side looks

then i had my cousin burn it in with the stick welder.
.
then painted the hoops

i took it on a test drive and it held up to 65mph, this is only temp. i now have to wait till i come across some thinner metal to bolt to the back of the cab and the sides.

so far i have spent $0.00 and have about 12 hrs in it.

You are making progress on your top. 65 mph is a good test.

I hear you on getting the time to get your starter, radiator, alternator in. Sometimes having the parts even a simple job can take a while to get done. Glad to hear you got your parts. Keep at it.

so the radiator out of the 81 had a different lower neck, where it went out then had a 90* bend upwards along with a smaller tube coming off of the straight back portion. good news is i cut the neck and pluged the other tube so it should work

bad news is the alternators not only have a different shape plug, they also have a differant shape case.on the newer ones where the lower bolt goes its a solid peice of metal the slides inbetween the mounting braket. the 81's has 2 ears the would go over a solid mounting braket. so basically they are opposite

It should of rang a bell with me, but you are right about the alternator. I ran into that a month ago. The plug isnt he same. Once I seen that, it ended using an earlier alternator. I didnt know about the mounting bracket.

At least you got the radiator working. I never tried an earlier radiator, so I would not known that one. Still a step closer.

it's really easy. i have all the links if you want them

edit: here's the links

i have a 140 amp under the hood, and it works great. i need to upgrade my old wiring, but it was plug-and-play. oh, and the stock toyota alt would be considered a "1 wire" as well

alternator: (12 o'clock housing, v-belt. 1/3 wire and 1 wire are the styles advertised)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GM-SB...item23102ca372
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GM-FO...item1c19b845fd
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GM-FO...item1c1a066367

adapter: (whichever one matches your stock plug. i used the first one, you might need the second)
http://store.alternatorparts.com/partno4618061.aspx
http://store.alternatorparts.com/partno461804.aspx

bracket: (you really only need to extend the top part, as they share the same base dimensions)
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=830388
(pm the guy, he'll take a little while to get back to you, but he's prompt once you get a hold of him)

if you need any other info, let me know. i got more links and stuff.

after doing some research i found out tht the older alternator (anythin 83 or older i believe) has an external regulator so it wouldnt have worked if i made it fit.

but in othe news. the mesh top has been on since friday and the only problem i had to fix was securing the very back after the hoop. on the pass. side the material is vise gripped to the hoop and the driver side has a bunjie going to the d-ring in the bed.

it works great. on a hot day i can sit under it and it feel 10-20*cooler.

glad i could help

from what i've seen, cs130 type are more common. what you need to make sure of is that the mounts are at opposite sides. also, i'd get any alternator tested at the local parts store

good luck with the alt hunt!
