Hello Mark.. I have learned a few things myself lately, always nice to know something new each day. Seen on your other post and just for some information for you. I just learned the the secind gen 4Runner doors dont interchange with the pickups. They are about an inch to short. I knew the grills are not an exact fit as well just in case you ever decide to sell body panels for the next generation of trucks.
Hello Cyberhorn...I think I have seen the inclometer on both styles of dash pads but could be wrong. The maplight and dome light is handy when doing alot of nite driving like I usually do. I am always looking for something inside the truck.
Hello RAD4Runner..Those are some great pics. It is surprising how some trucks are the same but different. Each persons personallities that help seperatet them.
Hello dakotawho... Im sure most have been installed after the person got the truck. It is something I am going to start looking at when I see a truck with an inclometer.

terry, i couldn't bring myself to read through all 57 pages on this thread, but i read through some and i'm enthralled. i'm slowly reviving my 85/86 (there's a discrepancy between the dmv and the vin), and i've got a couple questions... for now: I'm having a hard time finding a lot of interior parts, especially door panels, do you have any advice?/What do you do with anything you end up with duplicates of? (i'm keeping a close eye on craigslist and ebay, and i'm planning a big trip to a local pick n pull)
I dont care to sell on Yotatech myself, just because these parts are 20 plus years old and have seen others get their name run thru the mud for parts that didnt meet the buyers expectations. I do occasionally post some things on here that I cant get rid of locally and know there are people that need some of the things I have. I try to just break even on them and to have the cost of shipping covered.
These are some half panels that I got off of a camper. Sometimes you have to get creative and use pickup parts and adapt them to a runner and vice versa. I would just cut the hole in the back for the passengers to open the door.
On my 88 Runners build, I show how I use interior paint to freshen up the looks of the interior. If the time is taken to clean pieces right and using the right interior paint, you can change alot of panels from one color to the next and it will last and is quite rewarding to see a nice interior when ever you get in and drive. Done right and with the right paint, it is great.
You will eventually learn what is hard to come by and when it is a good deal, get them before someone else does or they get ruined. It is easier and cheaper for both parties to trade for excess they may have or that they got at a good deal. That really helps keep build cost down and it does come back around.
The first gen runner interior is poorly designed. I have taken several broken pieces and used and epoxy to put them back together and also to make them more solid. Grego92 has a thread on recreating panels and did a great job on his. The roof of my top is needing a new covering and I am eventually going to recover it. I seen a thread on that somewhere and it turned out great. I also want to put cloth on my rear passenger panels to give more of an SR5 look eventually. Getting creative and doing it your self is really rewarding. That is part of the fun when you make it look like it is in great condition and it came from the factory that way. Even if the back panels are cracked or faded badly, you can cover them and who would know? Ok...I seen you picture album so I would know, I wont tell.lol
Welcome to Yotatech and looking forward to your build.

Today was when I would of left for my year trip of fun in the sun. Glad I didnt have to go this time. A year seems so long when over there or looking ahead, but looking back it goes quick. Cant believe this year is nearly half over. Time flies.
Today I had plans of trying to get the passenger side of the 86 completed and I think I have an hour or so and it should be done before I start doing the finer sanding. I have 2 dings and a deep scratch in the rocker panel and this side will be done. Did get started on the hood.
Planning to have it as close to being ready for paint by the end of the week, but every time I plan something, something comes up. Had to go see the oral surgeon and he was not impressed to see my tooth hadnt healed. It is starting to frustrate him, then the wifey wanted to open the pool for summer so helped her with that, then an older guy I go to chruch with has a 90 Toyota pickup drove by and wants me to change his clutch slave cylinder for him tomorrow.
While waiting for the body filler to dry, I put up alot of winter things and that got me to start wanting to get rid of several things on Craigslist and sometimes things sit on there so long I forget about having it posted but this time the phone started ringing off of the wall. So had some people stopping by for those things. Somehow I did manage to work on the 86 and finally got the bed bolts off of the 85.
I had to break 3 of the bed bolts off and now if the fuel filler neck will just come off, I can raise the bed and get the fuel tank out and start cleaning it. I dont care for cleaning tanks in the warmer weather as the fumes are dangerous, but I am sure it is in bad condition and I have to fix the drain bolt anyways.
Still hoping to have the 86 as close to paint by the end of the week, but I was told I have to go to some classes after work tomorrow and have to take care of some other things as well so who knows if I will get that far or not. I plan on finishing the passenger side, then the hood and driverside will be next, then the tailgate are and start on the cab roof. If all goes well, I could get it done, but things keep coming up.
Today I got hot working outside for a change. I hope winter is gone for good. Even though I didnt get big things accomplished, I got alot of small things done and it felt like I was coming out of hibernation. This is what I am more used to. Should get a few things done in the next couple of days, but am hoping Thursday and Friday doesnt get tied up on anything else.

Way to go Terry. I know the feeling.
My shop vac gave out on me last week, and found out the motor was bad, cheaper to buy a new one. Done...
My mower gave me a problem a few weeks ago, had to work on that on my spare time, thought it was the ignition module and would require adjusting. Wasn't that at all, turned out to be the carburetor. All it need was a good cleaning to remove the residual moisture in there. That was done and it work twice (2 lawn cuttings) and then on the third cutting, went to pull the start and wham... the cord comes straight out and doesn't return. Well the starter recoil fell apart in there because of the flimsy plastic cover holding it in place warped. Here's the funny part, parts to rebuild the recoil starter is roughly $18.99 and that's just for 4 parts of the recoil starter. The whole piece from searparts online cost $39.99 and really it's a OEM briggs and stratton part. The same part OEM from other sources range from $25 to $30 shipped. So i am waiting on that part.
And for the past couple of days I've been tied up with work which is usually remote work, but lately has been onsite and what that means for me is a 200 mile drive.
I'm hoping for better this week that I will have some time to work on my truck, so i know the feeling all to well.
One other good news for me was while I was up there working and since the owner is a good friend of mine as well and his business is scrap metal and he gets a few cars always coming through. I asked him about toyota pickup trucks and 4runner and should him a picture of my 4runner and of course he said to me that he very rarely see these come through. I told him any pickup truck would do from 86-95 with a 22re and he said most of what he gets which is very rare is tacomas that year, i said same truck different name. he said he will call me when one come in. He also said that what if a 4runner comes through, do i want it of course I said yeah. They only pay between 3 to 500 for cars and trucks depending on their weight as it most always goes for scrap. since they are busy most of the time I highly doubt that i will ever receive a call.

Hello junk4u... I lucked out this year and my mower has been running great. I got a feeling I will be needing to change a jackshaft on it and sharpen the blades but it is alot better then what I went thru last year.
When a chance to get a parts of a truck or runner, I jump all over it. I have ten of some parts and none of the ones I do need. Some of the parts I do have I thought I would never need and more then once, I have used them that most wouldnt save.
I have a nice shop vac and it rarely gets used. I use the air hose for my cleaning. I think the wife used it more then I do. I like the carwash vacuum better.
Hello cyberhorn... I feel like I have come out of hibernation. I have been putting in some long hours on several different things besides trucks and it does feel good to get something accomplished. I just dont like to see a good day go to waste and sitting inside the house. I can start to feel it catching up with me as I can go awhile without sleep, but it does catch up with me. I am sure I will be snoring tonite and the wifey just looking forward to that I am sure.

An older guy I go to church with asked if I could change out his clutch slave cylinder and wondered how long it would take. I said normally around 30 minutes but I would not be surprised if it took 2 hours. It took me 3 hours. Whoever worked on it before had wrong bolts holding the slave cylinder on, one was a 10mm and the other is 12mm. They didnt mount the bracket back to the tranny/starter as they should of, but did get creative with zip ties.
I have all of the odd ball parts and basically had to rebuild the line from the firewall down to the slave cylinder. It is a nice truck but some poor workmanship on it. Has a tranny marked with all kinds of salvage yard markings. Nothing wrong with that, but they took the cheap way out and used silicone all over everything and it has a lot of leaks.
The same mechanic that got the silicone on sale, goat a sale on rolled wiring it is everywhere.
Nice truck.

11mm? nut with a completely wrong line.

Another Bubba fix. Drivers side is just as bad, horn, and wiper is fixed just as poorly. Had a special on wire somewhere. Just dont understand the poor fixes. It is fixable but needs alot of work. It is a great little truck and in great condition other then passenger door.

I wanted to get a picture of the runners with their tops on. It is raining and is supposed to stop here shortly. Once it passes the tops will be coming off, if not today, it should be tomorrow. Looking forward to that.
I was out in the storage shed and forgot that I had gotten a great deal on some parts and when I opened them up, it was almost like Christmas again. Some was excess that I already have but there have been times I have used parts I would of never thought I needed.
Had to go to some training today, but hoping the next two days will be freed up to get several things done. Maybe Spring is finally here.

My girl's truck has a very light light starting stage of clear coat problem on the top of her rig(if i remember correctly. So in a case like that do i just need to sand the clean coat off a bit then spray new clear coat? I'll try to get some pix of it whenever i see her truck again. It really isnt that big of a deal. but because it has already started i know it'll only get worse.

hey terry wow did someone spill wire spaghetti in there?? sheesh!
always good to see your runners encouragement to keep goin on mine
hey let me know how much for the tailgate stay bolt i contacted dealer an the gate stay would if it was still available sold as a kit which i wouldnt have minded but its discontinued
clear coat peeling you have to carefully remove it an clean it like your performing brain surgery then spray a new 2 part catalyzing clear coat

its common for the 80's into the early 90's though not isolated its caused by the manufacturers clear coating too soon after painting the body's the volitales didnt fully get to evap thus it happens most on horizonal surfaces that get more sun which makes the chenicals boil tween the paint an clear
though chevy an american cars had a secondary issue in the 80's a guy disgruntled with his boss was taking a leak in the primer mixers for months they sold the primer to the american big 3 causing the paint an clear layers to blow off in a stiff breeze my time as a secuirty guard i got to read a few dealer service alerts
people would get a new paintjob which was a full strip to bare metal if they screamed enough otherwise dealers were told to oh its just a bit of peeling Pooh Pooh'in it

Hello Richard... It does just need to be recleared. I have seen it done but have never done just a section. It takes so working to blend it in so as it doesnt look shiney and the old but good clear looks faded. It is interesting to watch when some one knows how to fool them minds eye. Unfortunatley it will get worse. But the faded paint you have probably isnt faed as much as you think. The first base coat/ clear coat I did was thinking this is not the color I ordered. But the first mist of clear got reid of all of them fears. The base in my experience always has a chalky look to it.
Hello junk4u... You see alot of clear peeling on cars. Hope someday they get the science down to make it last a while. I find it easier to paint a whole car instead of parts of one. I have doen it in the past, but it is a recently painted car and using the same paint that it was painted with.
Hello Cyberhorn...I think I am needing one for the center bolt, is that the one you are talking about? I still havent gotten mine on as I still need to color sand mine. Speedy isnt my middle name.lol
I had an uncle that worked for Ford and he said they had some workers that would sabatage cars when he worked there. Also some engineers took short cuts on designs or management went for the cheap. It shows in some domestic cars and I was one of the last that would of switched to foreign cars. Now I wish I would of years ago. They are all to blame and in some sort of way so I cant really feel for them.
My father in law retired Ford UAW and he will even admit that sometimes things got out of hand and poor decisions went into things. I am sure he loves it when I pull up in his drive way with my Toyota. I know my mother in law does, NOT!!! hehehe

I was in the shop at 5:30 am and came out at 6 in the evening. Doesnt look like much for 12 hours but got alot done as I actually worked on 3 different trucks.
The top and hood will flex easily so that slow down some thing, I have 4 small places to touch up on the roof and it should be done.

I removed the trim off of one side and found alot of dirt behind the trim. I tried to take an air hose and blow the dirt out of the other side befroe removing the trim and see what I could get out. I then removed the trim and found the same amount. I would suggest using a high pressure hose at the carwash and get behind the trim to keep the dirt out.

I did get the fuel tank out of my 85. I try to mention the conditions that some of these tanks are in and luckily this tank is one of the cleaner ones I have seen. Not clean but not as bad as some I have seen.

Truck doesnt look much different, but now it is alot smoother. I need to finish the roof cab, tailgate area, and the drivers door. Misty has been wanting to run the primer gun for sometime. I wasnt sure how long she would last out there and what she would remember from the past, but did suprise me at what she was able to do.
Here she is running the primer gun. After she got done priming, I showed her where she had missed by not squatting down and keeping the gun at the proper angle and when she got to far out that she had primer drying in the air before it got on the truck. She went back and removed the bad primer and did a great job the second time around.

Here she is running out some excess primer and it may not show but she Zebra striped the primer on the hood. It is no big deal as I have sanded alot of it back off. I let her do this to get the feel of what all is involved in painting. She wants no part of painting as she even said she got to close to the surface and to maintain a steady speed and remembering where you have been and then seeing the stripes. I said in primer it is okay, Zebra Striping in paint is not okay. All in all she did great on the wet sanding and some priming. I dont think I will ever be able to talk her into operating a paint gun.

Hunter seen mom priming and wanted to get involved. He stuck around for some sanding. I had some good ventilation going in the shop and for small priming, primer doesnt get in the air as bad. When it comes to painting, it doesnt take much at all for paint fumes to get up in the air and you need to wear a mask for painting. Priming not so much, Painting, wear a mask. Paint will ruin your day if you dont.

Justin wanted to do some priming. Mr. Unambitous didnt stick around for any sanding. Had to spend some time cleaning the shop up. I spend 5 minutes in there and need a day to straighten it back out.

im keeping the diamond top plate bumper that was on mine kris wants to redo all the welds they made on it as they ... well the welds are worse than mine when ive done hand welding its grafted onto the factory receiver that slides into the frame needs major rust removal then i can stuff it back in
likely we'll pull the rear end out first to clean things up an do the backing plates the spring bushings are rotted ive got a polyurethane kit on ebay in my book marks to replace them before it goes back in
