Hello Co 94 PU.. That is some great ideas that I will be looking into. I was surprised at what water would do to the rims. I sprayed the back side just to get some grease off and then set them in a full tank of hot water. I thought I was being safe. I learned a lesson the hard way. Thanks for the link. Something I am really intrested in.

Hello Cyberhorn.. That did get my little pea brain wondering about the differnent possibilities. Looks really easy and the colors do have some nice effects to them.

It looks a little goofy without a bumper and may not be completely square but I did get my reciever hitch on and will square it up when I do get a bumper. It will be nice to start using mine for towing soon instead of using the other trucks. Still need to get the rear brakes back together and still havent messed with the rims since the fiasco.

Hitch is on. Still havent got my rear trim on as I still need to finish wet sanding and polish it. It is moving up the list though.

Terry,

I have to disagree with CO_94 regarding your rims. It is anodized, but it will easily come off. All you need is Easy Off over cleaner with lye. You can spray the rims with this and give them a good 10 minutes or so to work. It should start turning the rims almost black while it is working. Once you have done this, the anodized coating will be easily removed with some sand paper.

You can then polish the rims like bare aluminum to the finish you desire. You can even make them mirror shine if you'd like. If you wanted a decent finish, you could just use a mothers ball and polish kit to see what that gets you. One things is for certain though, they will never look good with all the chipped finish currently on there.

There are a ton of aluminum clears on the market. I couldn't give you a recommendation on one, because I have always left my rims bare aluminum so that I can repolish when I want. I actual like to polish aluminum, so call me crazy. You could also fully polish and have them reannodized if you'd like, but thats up to you.

I'm colorblind as I've mentioned before but the color reference just didn't seem right to me. Mine always come out a chalky whiteish, grey maybe, but never black. Turns out it is determined by the alloy components, copper for instance turns black in an alkaline solution. This is the part that they remove with an acidic desmut.

Here, is a good document from aluminiumtoday, kind of indepth and sciencey
Here, is the DIY guy I keep running into he sells a book and chemicals, I was trying to avoid this guy just because "he is selling information" but he's kind of every where

And for a final "my 2c". You might not of caused the bare aluminium, it might of been from the whatever was on there eventually ate thru what ever was used for protection be it clear coat or anodized. You can always just sand it off without any chemicals, CC or AL-oxide, it'll just be alittle harder on the sand paper budget.

Is that cali frame original paint! Man mine's not in near a great a shape as I thought if so. I still need to replace all my frame plugs to keep the snow and blowing dirt out

Hello BamaYota1.. You are right that I will not be happy with chips in the rims. I am really shooting for a capable little truck but I want a truck that looks like it could of come from the factory with a few little twist or upgrades. I am really wanting to get my rims to as good or better then what they were. This truck still has a long ways to go from what it was to what I want it to be. I have an 88 Runner and I know I can do alot better with this 86 then I did on the 88 and right now it is my all time favorite truck. I like the polished aluminum as well.

Thanks CO 94 PU..Keep the ideas coming. I spent some time looking into your ideas and I know it will get used and pay off in the end for where I want this truck to be.

That is a California frame. The first time I went to the yards in San Diego, there were cars in there that was in way better shape then what we were working on at the time. Unless someone does some off roading, there just isnt any dirt to get on them. Around here we have so many unpaved roads around here that I am on one at least once a week. I spend as much time washing under my trucks as I do the top side.

If you are running dirt roads, you will get alot of dirt in there. I too am going to plug my holes when I get the frame cleaned out. You should see what came out the first few times I cleaned mine. I use high pressure air and then high pressure water. Eventually I will get some oil in there as best as I can.

A Link I found that has a few good ideas.>>>http://home.earthlink.net/~twopapa/toytech.htm

Try "Goop" hand cleaner. I get it at Harbor Freight. It actually works really well. Better than anything Else I have tried.

Oh I missed that one i guess. Anything with orange/citrus oil works really well.

I have a can of industrial citrus cleaner for when nothing else works, "Kimball Midwest, System 1 Chemical ????, Citri-blast, Citrus Solvent, 80-774" ????=It ate the label and I can't read it. Says it's 8-10% Lemonene on the MSDS, it's probably not the safest stuff (has some glycol, parrafin, ether and acetone), but it sure works good.

Hello matstaley..I am going to be making a HF run soon as I need to get some supplies and will give that a try as well. I finally had to break down and be a girlie man and start using hand lotion and that keeps my hands from cracking nearly as bad and makes it a lot easier to get them clean. I like your Gun Control and Rosie ODonnel comments, I got a kick out of them. Your avatar looks like a clean extra cab. I am working on an 85 extra cab and want it to be a clean looking little truck when done with it. I will be looking at your profile and see what SR5 options I might be able to add to mine.

Hello Co 94 Pu..We got some Citrus cleaner at work that does some great cleaning on just about anything. Anything with Citrus seems to work great. I havent found any on store shelves, and it is most likely indutrial strength. I really like it. I am going to get a few onces as I got some good pants greasy and the wife was not pleaseyed. Opps!! Hope works good on pants as well.

I work nite shift and I ran into some heavy snow. Luckily I am able to take alot of backroads to work and live in a rural area and I dont know if it was my headlights or what, but I just couldnt see at times. They seem to be adjusted well but tonite I had better luck seeing with them shut off. I am going to look into seeing if I cant mount some LEDs for foglights in the cutouts by the license tag holder.

I can drive in two wheel but finally put it in 4 wheel to make it easier to handle on the road and to take the back way so I could run without my headlights on. The snow was coming down hard enough that I couldnt drive over 20 mph at times so even with some fog lights, it wouldnt make a difference. But I did find an upgrade that I want to do just so I will be ready for the next time. I want this winter over with soon, it is getting to be a long winter.

I have an ancient set of fogs in my cut outs that are wired with a relay triggered by the high beam lead. They fill the bottom out really well.

I wish I were a fabricator, so I would just raise the hitch and use it as the bumper, and make sure the jack extension rod handle can go through the receiver to operate the spare tire lift. Right now, th aftermarket bumper on mine blocks access to the spare lift lowering mechanism.

I use Fast Orange hand cleaner. Works well, smells good and water-soluble. When my carpet got soaked with brake fluid from clutch MC, I scrubbed it with Fast Orange, then rinsed while scrubbing. Worked very well. Should work on pants, too.

I also think the rectangular openings are ideal and safest place for foglights. Below the bumper may be ideal (lower) but not safe for rough terrain. I'm considering the following whose dimensions might work:Pls post what you come up with.

Hey Terry, ......

Wont lie, I came here to pillage info(regarding the climate control assembly and dash dis-assembly, etc..... Not sure which thread all those tutorials are in)....

BUT, wanted to share that I COMPLETELY understand the frustration with the PAIN, very serious pain, and often embarrassment involved with the 'FILTY, CRACKING, BLEEDING, AGONIZING PAIN-MECHANICS HANDS DILEMMA!' hehe....

For me, while I don't deal with such extreme cold as you, I do deal with lots of 80's-90'sF Summer days, VERY low humidity, ....and a type of allergen to Petroleum Based Products. From what I've been reading, it's VERY common for people to develop SERIOUS cracking and such, not only from the products, but LARGELY due to repetitive, perpetual use of the same fingers/angles/pressure upon said digits, etc. This repetition SERIOUSLY effects how petroleum and other oil based products get ground into the joints of our hands, and WORSE(from what I've read).... Calluses! Once they're embedded in there, they FESTER and want OUT.... That's why the repetitive areas are so badly effected(along with the simple fact that we're abusing our skin/tissue with overdoing it, most likely? lol)... I've even had to grind down 100$+ Chef's Knives on top to create a smooth/round edge on top, where I use the pointer and thumb to 'roll', along with the leverage at the ball of my wrist on the handle? THIS KILLS after a while if I forget to smooth new knives out.

In the garage/car work? I KNOW it's hated, and it's often not possible, but GLOVES, GLOVES, GLOVES! 7Mil Nitrile Industrial or at least 5Mil, from HFreight or Lowes or wherever I find to be cheapest(YES, it matters, as I change them a few times in those days.... AND THEY'RE PRICEY! lol).... People buy the cheap, Lower Mil ones from Mr. Clean or whatever and they LOOK fine.... BUT IGNORE how they LOOK, lol.... they ALWAYS tear too eaily and then people just throw them down in disgust and say, "Oh, I will use those for something else, FORGET IT!" .... but never do! haha. THEY SUCK, and Gorilla or other 7Mil gloves, while they DO tend to grab on things when you don't always want them to, while they can get in the way, ..... I'M TELLING YOU, TERRY..... if you can get your thin hands and arms in there and do the job WITH Gloves? DO IT, it will solve 90% of that problem right there.

The 'STUFF'? Yeah....... I have tried them all... and LAVA, BABY! It's by far the best starter, for me, and finisher.... It REALLY grinds into the stuff by just holding the bar and rubbing the corners right into those cracks/stubborn spots(I KNOW, I know, ... ouch, but it works).... On occasion, I'll use Comet, rubbing it into the spots I KNOW nothing is going to get 'clean', per say. Leave it in 10 minutes, keeping it moist... Then just wash like normal with the LAVA BAR and then????? GOJO ORANGE WITH PUMICE or PERMATEX ORANGE.... The sealant company? They make a REALLY effective one, IMHO.... They sell small, 4oz bottles that I put in my toolbox, etc. One of the keys with Orange Cleaners, however, is to KEEP RUBBING! Don't scrub for a few seconds or a minute, then rinse and say, "OH WELL", lol... I know, I'm sure you go at it like crazy. Just saying. And ADD NEW, every 20 seconds or so. Gets pricey too, but I'd rather go through it and spend more on my GIANT pump tubs of Gojo Orange w/Pumice than deal with my YEARS of cracking and bleeding hands! OUCH!

Now, LET'S BREAK from this painful talk for a shot of my Granddaughter, eating Watermelon..... I think you could say she likes it... And, well, it's a pleasant-thought-break from the aforementioned, lol....

Or maybe you're not crazy about Kids.... How about my INSANE Cat, Gimpy-three legger(Aka Tiger), and how he sleeps.... WITH HIS EYES OPEN AS WELL, BTW! hahahaha>>>>

Ok, back to our painful hands.....

THE COLD, DRY WEATHER, Terry...... you just HAVE to protect your hands from that... And, no kidding, as you've found out... If you don't, you can wind up with a problem that can take MONTHS to clear up! It's not just 'dry cracking/bleeders'... It's bacteria and festering chemicals that don't belong there, which can also be part of creating a lasting and painful problem.

Sorry to go on, I JUST HATE that for ya... And I've been there, so I wanted to let you know... IT'S POSSIBLE to BEAT IT! lol..... here's after DAYS of pretty hard work with these particular fingers, twisting on my Rack stuffs, and dealing with a couple suspension things...... 7 MIL GLOVES worn through it all, even though it was driving me NUTS! lol.....(Also, for the dry stuff on the cage, I wore my "Mechanix" gloves, the new ones, pretty thin but SUPER tough.... I learned to grab ones that fit pretty snug, as they stretch... but WOW, they really DO allow me to turn bolts, etc., without 'binding' and 'twisting', if you KWIMean?)>>>>

Nowwwwww, ...THIS SUCKER? From 28 YEARS of working with my hands, hard, every day? ......... OUCHHH! YES, it's a super painful lump on my thumbkle, lol.... (YES, I call it that, WHY NOT, right? lol)>>>

I know this sounds funny.... But soaking in Dawn? IT WORKS! Just be patient.... Soak em in that warm dilution for 20min-30min.... THEN wash as normal again, with LAVAAAAAAA! Hey, if I have time to sit down and watch TV for an hour or so, I figure I can do that, right? lol. I add a lil Gojo in there and sometimes Comet if it's bad(TINY bit of comet, just enough to break down the grease, once the warm water opens up the CRAGS in my fingers that are full of grease! lol)...

************************************************** **

Ok, so where's that climate control assembly postage??? lol.

Hello matstaley..I am going to be adding the fog lights to mine as well. I like the place where you put yours and think it will be a great location. I had to part a wrecked standard cab truck identical to yours. That was one of the most loaded trucks I have ever seen. I really wished I could of saved it but the cab was twisted and rust had gotten to the passenger side. I still have everything else other then the cab off of it and most of it will be going on my Downey truck build when I do get to it. I will still be a few years from now when I get to it as I am still working on other projects and accumilating parts for it. In some of my pictures, in the back ground, you will see the frame for it. I am getting a rust free cab from jason in tn so most of that truck will see the road again someday.

Hello RAD4Runner..I wish I was a fabricator as well. I am still getting my shop up and running and when I get it set up, a welder is on the list. I did stick welding years ago in high school and miss it. Just now getting to where I can eventually get a welder and when I do, I plan on going thru some metal and learning it as fast as I can. So many times I wish I had one for some simple fixes. I actually need to fix a spot in both of my projects in the floor boards.

I will post my fix for the foglights. This past winter was a few days I really could of used them. Luckily I live in a remote part of the country and have the experince of being able to drive in those kind of conditions. When I was younger it was a challenge and fun for me, now I just want to get from point A to point B as soon as possible.

I will check into the Fast Orange as the wifey has give me some "pep talks" about me staining some good jeans. Just like my hands, I used to wear coveralls all of the time and may need to be another habit that I need to get into again.

Speaking of Clutch Master Cylinder. I just noticed Mistys runner has leaked some on here carpet. I put new carpet in it when I built it and now am hoping that Fast Orange will clean it up.

Hello Mark.. I am such a watermelon eater and am ready for some to start showing up at the super markets. Misty does all of the grocery shopping and they may be in the stores, I just dont go. She doesnt like all of the things I add to the grocery cart. That is a great looking little girl and bet she is giving that melon a run for the money.

I will give you a call one day this week when you get a chance. I cant believe it has been a month since I have updated this thread and am way behind on updating my thread and have several that I want to get caught up on. Hopefully things should settle down and I can get things back to normal. Any questions that come up though, you have my number and feel free to geive a holler and I will try to give the best info I can on it.

I have been wearing gloves and lotion a lot more and it is finally starting to make a difference. Right now just my right pointer finger knuckle is still healing. I have neglected my hands for quite some time and you are right, that it will bite me in the butt if I am not careful. An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Hello Cyberhorn.. I agree with you. The mellon and grand baby is a great looking pic. I have to admit that I wouldnt take candy from a baby, but a mellon, no promises. lol

I cant believe it has been nearly a month since I have posted on my 86 Runner. I have had so much going on lately and with the cold, I really havent been doing much. We are still cold til this coming Thursday, and tonite and tomorrow we are to get snow. I am ready for winter to get out of here. I have a ton of things that I want to do.

Jason passed thru here and got to spend a couple of days with him and had a great time. We swapped tires and what a difference it made on the noise on my runner. I liked the looks of the tires and rims I had on it but didnt care for the width and didnt want to add my lift back on. If I ever do the 4.88s and 33 inch tires I will but for now that is way down the road.

The last time Jason was here, my truck looked like a prime candidate for the salvage yard. This time he got to take it for a drive and he seen what it looked like when it look like it would never see the road again and knows what all really went into it to get it back on the road. It was nice having another Yota guy appreciate what went into it and get to drive it. The pictures of it really doesnt do justice to how bad it was. With the tires I got from him, it has really made driving this rig a whole new pleasure.

I also got my SR5 Rims on it and wasnt sure how it was going to look with them on it. I figured it would look great or completely terrible. I still need to get them freshened up and it should be happening soon.

We went to the bone yard and got a few parts. We were looking around and they have a Toyota camper with a perfect dash pad in it. I will be going to the yard later this week when it warms up and will put it in Mistys truck and take her old dashpad and put it in mine. Hers has a hairline crack in it but is still better then what I have. Her truck takes priority as it is our other daily driver and eventually I will get a perfect dash in mine.

Between military, work training, and trying to get my shop up and running, I have been tied up alot but think it is going to slow down for a while. My job site tore down a shed and I got alot of the materials from it for my shop and just had it stored in my shop with all kinds of parts that I recently acquired and knowing Jason was coming out this way, I had to get off of my rear as I would of been a little embarrassed at how terrible it was.

The shop is another project that is in the works and with the progress I have made recently with it, I am finally starting to see the possibilties of it gettin closer to being done or atleast to where I can work in it when it is extremely hot or cold. The cold is what slowed me down this year and I am hoping it helps if we have another hot summer. Just need another Yotatecher to stop by to get me off of my rear and get something done to it.

SR5 Rims on it and sooo much quieter.

I will be tackling another project later this week when the weather warms up. A friend of mine came across this 86 Extra Cab 22r truck. I really think this truck drives and rides about as good as it did the day it was bought from the car lot. It is one sweet little truck that just needs some small work on it. I will be knocking out the dents that it does have and painting it. The frame is loaded with dirt and will need to get cleaned out and I will be doing the SR5 guage swap, setting the valves, fixing the backglass, replacing the front bumper with a new chrome bumper, and taking 3 rear bumpers and making one good one out of the three. The rear bumper on this truck is actually one hard bumper to find and is no longer available from Toyota. He wants it to be as nice as I can possibly make it and close to orginal as possible. I got to drive this little truck and it gives me the possiblities of what my 85 can be like.

Ive been looking into a led strip too for my runner but it would be cool to hide them in the pockets on the bumper.Im totally impressed with the light they put out but are expensive.

That pickup looks pretty nice, im sure you can handle it...not as rough as the earlier one you did 81?? 83?? cant remember.

You get heat in your shop yet??? Barrell stove...cheap simple and effective.

Take care Terry!!
