I know you'll eventually replace or rebuild it, but if you need a little time, you might try and slow it down with some power steering fluid conditioner (not the sealer stuff, haven't heard anything about that). I think the additives help swell up the seals. I've heard of guys using the Lucas stuff successfully on the camry's, and it's ok to work with ATF. You can call Lucas and talk to someone to see what, if any, of their products would help.

Those toyota rebuild gasket kits are about $120, and as Mark said seems like a pretty involved task according to the youtube videos I've seen .

Hey Grego... yep... I just want to be careful influencing people to do something a certain route, ya know? I see so much "HEY, IT'S EASY STUPID!"... And in part, it's just 'parts come off, parts go on, run it'... BUT, he's got 'time' issues and such... So throw it ALL out there, right?

I see those kits for 58$, Grego... So that's a factor too. Napa has them as well, made by Altrom?

And what about "Auto Trans Resealer/Conditioner"??? Just a thought... NO IDEA if it's the right route. BUT YES, Lucas are VERY good about 'providing answers' and not being 'super fluff' as in "OUR STUFF BUILDS BRIDGES ON IT'S DAY OFF, ...AND RUNS UPSIDE DOWN WITH SUGAR AND SAND AT 5000RPM FOR 3 DAYS!"........... YA KNOW? LOL.

PS> He might have bent the input portion of the rod/worm shaft? That CAN be the reason they spring leaks at times... Just sayin....

......get one that's not leaking... never been in a wreck or likely wheeled much... 'voila'... BUT, nothing is "voila" with used parts.... it's a catch 22 for sure... But DON'T OVER THINK IT! Just "think it out right", take notes and compare pros and cons... Then be honest with yourself as to whether you think you can handle this totally by yourself if you need to..... And; What tools will I need? What to watch out for(Like the 'don't lose the ball and spring in the hubs' stuff)... etc.

Hey guys I got some news. I just git off the phone with my girl's Uncles. And they said they sell a rebuilt steering box for $163(tax included) with an exchange of the one I have on mine. Anyone know if this is a good deal considering the amount of "involved work" that goes into something like this? I still have some researching to do. But at least I have that to fall to if I just decide not to do it. Like I said the last time I encountered a problem, if I can fix it I'd rather like to learn how to fix everything myself on this truck in case I ever run in to the same problem again.

Rockauto seems about the same price (some lower some higher) with exchange. You get the benefit of a quick no hassle exchange with your contacts though.

That's a tough decision...do you know if that part is specific to 1st gen runners? if they are the same as the 2nd gen runners you could easily find one at the local yards. If it were me (because I have other vehicles to drive), AND the part is available at the yard.....I would 1st try a junkyard replacement. If it doesn't work you can take it back. If it works, great!, then order an oem rebuild kit and take your time learning/rebuilding your busted one and swap them once completed. And now you'll have a known working spare.

Of course, like Mark said, if it's something beyond just needing a rebuild kit, then you'll need to also swap parts from the junkyard one before putting the rebuilt one back in....and you won't have a full spare.

I just replaced my brake master cylinder and wheel cylinders with oem Aisins. I kept the master and wheel cylinders because I'm going to rebuild them and keep them as spares and for the "trail box". OF COURSE I'll have to take my truck out on some expeditions to make use of a trail box

Greg These guys i'm talking about look everything up according to what year/month your truck was made. Thats one question they asked was what month it was made in. And its like you said i can always rebuild it but then i have the chance of getting it right here in my hand immediately ya know.

All that aside, Just a nice little update
The MarlinCrawler Fairy paid me a visit and brought his TrailGear Buddy along with him.

I got my front 4cyl 4.88 Trail-Creeper Ring & Pinion. and My Marlin Crawler Front axle service kit along with my Heavy Duty Shift Lever Ball Seats.

Unfortunately i didn't order the Heavy Duty Shift Lever Socket. and those dudes wanna charge $8 for shipping on that tiny piece. So I'm just gonna hold off to order that part till i buy my spartan locker.

Nice stuff! If you're going to order the sockets in the future, might as well order the blue seat also for the transfer case. I did both of mine when I did that.

You actually might have a good chance at the yard if your mfg. date was after 8/88. I just plugged in 1989 4runner, bored here at work, and did a little researching for you. DOUBLE CHECK everything, but this is what I came up with:

Your gear box is no longer sold at the dealerships, but the part no. is 44110-35190. If you take a part no. and go to the toyotapartszone website you can see all the vehicles that the part is for. That part no. produced the following

http://www.toyotapartszone.com/Page_...er=44110-35190

It appears you have the same box as me! But you can't have mine. So there appears to be 2nd Gen runners that are model years 1990, 1991, and some 1992 (manufactured dates of 8/88 - 8/91) that have the same part. I know you're aware of how common the 2nd Gen runners at the yards are around here. This is good news for me too since I now know I have access to spares, matter of fact I might grab one at the next 1/2 off sale!

Actually, I take it back, the 2nd gen runner model years are 90' and 91', NOT 92' also. But still a very good chance at the yards.

AND I do not have the same as yours, whew! don't have to worry about you stealing mine , my mf. date is 9/91 so my part no. is 44110-35230 and I share the part with 92'-95 4runners and 92' T100's.

Hey Greg. As far as the seat goes I did buy it. I just forgot to buy the socket, which is why I gotta order from them again. I'll go ahead and get it when im ready to order the rest of the stuff like the locker so I don't pay for shipping twice.

BTW thanks for that list of years and parts. I definitely will put that to use. Think I might hit up a junk yard this weekend. See if i can find one from there. Then again I will be taking a chance of it being messed up too.
And those links Mark posted up will help me with the installaion process.

Right-on, right-onnnnnnnn! lol. Hmmmmm, time to print out some stuff, right? Helps me to have it in front of me.... When I sit at the puter, I often get flooded in the brain with stuff's that I've been looking into/looking at/wanting/not wanting to do, etc., etc., etc., ........ ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! lol. So, it sometimes helps to have the papers in my lap/hands, to try to pin down what I want/have to do

Any ifs steering box will work. There is really only two versions of the box. I'm on my phone so I can't find the link. But the only difference is gear ratio in each box. IMO if your gonna get a junk yard ifs box. Just find one that looks best with no leaks. The ratio won't be that big of a deal since your going SA anyways.

I went to both wilmington yards this morning. There was a 90' runner at the big yard. That one had the 3.0 engine taken out already but the steering gear was still there. There was oil/wet on the box but I couldn't tell if it was motor oil or a leak.

At the little yard there is a 91' and that one is there too. It is bone dry around the area. However there is a rusty tone to it which I think is because coolant spilled on top of it. There are also two badly stripped down 1st Gen runners, the silver one I walked right by the first time it was so stripped . The dual storage center console (without arm rest) is in it if you need one of those.

Oh yea same here dude. Honestly I don't like looking at a screen when im doing my mechanical work. I prefer looking on papers too. Its easier on the eyes and for me its just easier to go through. And on a plus side you dont hae to dirty your smart phone at the junk yard as you work lol

Oh wow thanks Toyo. That's great news. At least i know I wont be too limited now. One question though. Will all the mounts still fit? Like as far as the ones that tie it to the frame and the power steering hoses etc... Etc.... OH also whats the importance of the ratio?

Omg! Why! They are always stripped of their dignity the second they get to the junk yard!
Quick question. Did they have the rear plastic side panels? In good condition? Did it have an inclinometer, dome light?
Damn I'm gonna have to go for sure tomorrow. Thanks so much greg. Gotta see what I can get my hands on!

All IFS boxes mount the same as well as the hoses. The gear ratio is just that when you turn the wheel x amount the wheel turns y amount. Depending on gearing. One box will turn faster than the other. There is a picture I need to find that shows how to tell the difference in boxes so you know which one has what gear ratio. It's easy to tell once you see it

I didn't look close at the 4runners...but they were pretty badly stripped down. Definitely no inclinometer.

I went back again to the little yard. There's this certain canadian toyota 25th anniversary edition camry I'm grabbing parts from for my camry. Also, this time there was this beefy looking guy bee lining straight for those 4runners ....cussing away about how everything is broken up for no reason ....poor guy

I do the same thing, I hate when people ruin good parts just because.

The steering box is pretty straight forward, 3 bolts that hold it to the frame, pull the plastic cover up and remove the bolt and slip the steering shaft up, I had to loosen the top bolt to get it to slip, make sure before you take the shaft off to turn the wheels straight.

Remove the 2 power steering lines and remove the steering linkage from the pit man arm by removing the nut and hit the sides of the pit man arm with a BFH to break free the linkage.

Then you can remove it, it is heavy and awkward so be careful when removing and installing it. When you put the steering shaft back on, make sure it goes back in the same exact position.
I did my whole power steering conversion with box in about 1 hour with air tools.

I think Grego is speaking of me hahahaha.... "Cussing as he walked by".... Maybe not, but the fact is...... I RAN INTO GREGO while turning the corner onto Blinn Ave(the Wilmington yard street location)....

VERY GREAT TO MEET YOU, SIR! HOOAH! lol.... You're a very kind and class dude, Grego... Hope we can wheel and grub and maybe even fish some day

I actually got a few things, Grego/Richard/etc. lol... I will update my build when I have a minute.. But the teaser is that I THINK I found a PERFECT candidate for my 'CARGO AREA LIGHT'! .......... I'll give you a hint.... Starts with an "M" and ends with an "S"... and MAN, was this thing clean and WAY newer than I'd seen there in the 'MAIN' lot... (PYParts down here take anything over 2000 or so and slap em in a separate lot called "Late Model" lot.... And THEN YOU GET TO PAY ANOTHERRRRRRRR couple bucks to get into that one, from inside the one you just paid to get into. I'm going to try that next time I'm there.... As I REALLY would like a more modern set of a few things.

Anywhooooooooo, .... That second gen is VERY clean, actually, Grego/Richard... I mean, I was surprised! Of course, by tomorrow... FORGET THAT! lol. Unfortunately, while I DID head up to the end of the lot/furthest corner hehehe... to find the thing... (it's Dark Green, right Grego?).... I ran out of time to grab the box... But IT WAS still there. So was the entire motor, really. Injectors looked NEW, to be honest... Very surprised by the shape it was in on the inside, too. (PS> I like how some 2nd Gen pu's and 4Runners have "OH CRAP" handles on the pillars by the windshield. )

I'd still rather have a 3rd Gen.. but I've seen some VERY nice 2nd Gen 4Runners since being on here.

Haven't heard from ya, Richard... So I'm assuming you've got it handled? lol.
