Decided to remodel the interior of my '83 Toyota P/U. Adding some 6.5" speakers to the doors, and moving my old 5.25" speakers to the rear. Should have it all finished up tomorrow!

Here's the begining stages.. The main door panel is going to be done in a tan vinyl to closely match the stock panels, and the lower doors (speaker area) and kick panels are going to be done in a carpet matching the carpet on the floor of the truck. Hopefully it looks alright..

I know that little cab is going to be rockin' with 6.5's and 5.25's front and rear!!

Thanks Chef!! Yeah, I went to the lumber yard here in town and used 1/8" hardboard (a composite, pressed board) for the main door panel, and 1/4" for the lower panel/speaker mount. I just used the originals as a template and added a bit to the lower to fit the 6.5" speaker (Which totally rocks now!! Sounds like a mini subwoofer with all the bass).

I'm not 100% happy (although I probably should be) as I think I could have done a bit better job with the design and materials, but in my little town this was all I had available to me. Not bad for a quicky over night project. I'll probably end up re-doing them to match later down the road when I can't find anything else that needs attention

Wrapping it up:

Wow, looks great! You could always add some 'lines' ya know? Maybe some sound deadening on the outside of the panel.... then put the vinyl back on... maybe leave some gaps so you can do like a 'sewn' look of lines? MEH, it looks fantastic, probably don't need to do another thing! Just throwing out some 'I'M BORED, LET'S THROW EVERYTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK AT IT!!!!! " hahaha

OHHHHHH, I know, I know... Maybe add pockets right next to the speakers, ....lil trash/map slot? Not necessary, obviously.... but I DO use mine all the time.

WOW, I'M REALLY IMPRESSED, DSM! Very good work! I'm sceeeered of stuff like that... "ONE shot work" if you wanna keep your panels nice and clean.. BUT THIS, this could allow me to finally put in the 6.5"ers I have been wanting to slap in the doors!!! Maybe even components! WOOT! haha. I have much to do first, ....but SOME DAY, right?

Hey guys! Not much new to report with the truck.. It just starts up and drives where ever it's pointed without hickup or complaint. Still daily driving it.. About the only thing I can really say I've done since the last little update is I added a OEM Mini-Header. Cured my exhaust leak from the cracked cast iron one. It's as quiet as ever and love how comfortable it is crusing along the interstate at 75-80.

So enough locals have seen the truck it seems the word has got out that "I do Toyota swaps". I've got two big projects lined up. The first is a 1994 Pickup that's been fully converted for Baja style racing. It's all caged out, fiberglass pin on fenders, hood and bed sides. You get the idea.. Anyhow this is a former race truck (forget what class) but the previous owner who raced it decided to put in a 2UZ and really didn't know what he was doing. Truck runs but has all sorts of issues. Anyhow, I'm being contracted to rewire the entire vehicle. Should be a blast!

Another guy has hired me to do the wiring on his 2nd Gen 4Runner that's getting a 2JZ-GTE. Guess this guy wants a Pre-Runner 4Runner.

Looks like I've got a busy winter ahead of me with some wicked fast Toyota's!

How's the Peel & Seal So far?

This stuff works extremely well and you can find quite a bit of video on YouTube on this stuff (mostly stereo related). This combined with the mass-backed carpet kit I ordered should really keep noise out of the cabin. I can say that it's done wonders for thus far.

So far I've used up just about 3 rolls of the Peel & Seel. I've covered the rear cab, the transmission tunnel, floorboards (under the seats), the passenger-side footwell as well as both doors. Still have the drivers footwell to do do..

My local Lowe's has the 6"x25' roll for $17 and change. Much cheaper than the $65 for 12sq/ft of Dynamat.
Thanks for the tip, JustDSM
How's the P&S holding up so far? No peeling/melting from heat? No outgassing odor?
I'm considering it also for soundproofing my 86 4Runner. Turns out panels on this truck do not have any sound dampening materials. I found that a 3/8" particle board covered with carpet is laid on to of truck bed. It weighs 20 pounds! I don't need a floor that thick so I want to take it out and that with 20 pounds worth of sound dampener through out the panels.
Also removing chrome wheel well and rocker panel trims (they hold water and dirt in them); more weight off that I can replace with dampening mat weight.

By large it's holding up fantastic and still working very well. The only area where I have had minor issue with is on the door. The outer shell (where the door panel is attached) it's held up just fine. Which I'm assuming is because the surface is cleaner and it's not subjected to the elements.

Where it's started to come off is on the inner door panel (inside of the outer panel). It's held on, but about 25% of the surface area has lost adhesion. I'm speculating that it's due to slightly sub-par prep work and the fact that it's just subjected to more of the "elements" in that location. Could possibly be from the heat too, but I am not finding it having any problems in the middle, only on the outer edges. Never-the-less I just went ahead and used my razor knife and trimmed the stuff off that has lost adhesion and left what was still intact.

No odor at all, and it went away shortly after the initial install. Really happy about that.

In all, I'd definitely use it again if I was in the position too. Especially since this isn't an application where I'm trying to make it as quiet as possible. I just wanted to eliminate the tin can sound and quiet things up a bit. For this purpose I'm 100% satisfied.

Hope this helps. Sounds like you've got a good project on your hands! Drop by and send me a link to your work if you end up using the P&S!

PS: I noticed your avitar, by chance do you climb or do much mountaineering?

No doubt huh?!?! I'm super pumped they are giving me the opportunity to work on such projects.

Went and picked up the 2JZ today.. It's sitting in the garage (I'll post up some pics). I'm going to freshen it up (new headgasket, timing belt, ect) and get it ready for the swap..

And no kidding, if you get everything for a swap, I'd be more than happy to help you with the wiring aspect. If you go with a 3RZ of 97+ vintage, it's actually very simple.

In all honesty, if you have a source for a 2RZ/3RZ the swap is easy enough that for what you'd spend on quality parts and quality machine work, you could nearly have everything you need to do the swap if not actually get it.

With what I know now, I'd never rebuild a 22R again unless I was intending to flip the vehicle and sell it, or if the truck is just going to get driven into the ground as it is.

If you have plans to make your 1st/2nd/3rd Gen anything that you want to be proud of, as soon as your 22R/3VZ starts to take a crap, Go ahead and swap. Just my take.. I cannot begin to describe how much more usable my the 3RZ has made my truck. It is like driving a lightweight solid axle swapped Tacoma without A/C or power windows

You'll have modern power to cruise at today's freeway speeds, the fuel economy of a modern engine design (25mpg at 65mph or so), the driveability of a fuel injected motor, and the sex appeal of having a engine swap!

Do some research, see what engines are avail. near by. You might be surprised!

whats ecu did you use? i think my biggest issue would be finding an engine, toyota stuff in flordia is gold, a complete 3rz could cost someone around 1500 down here, not to mention the ecu, the tranys and all the little things like regasketing the motor, engine mounts, guess i have alot to think about

I used the OEM ECU from the truck the engine came from. If FL is demanding Toyota parts to be that expensive then it might actuallyi be more cost effective to rebuild a 22R. Especially if the engine alone is $1500!

I paid $450 for the engine, bellhousing, flywheel, complete vehicle wiring, and the ECU. But my engine was in need of a MAJOR rebuild. It had spun the #4 rod bearing badly, ruining the crank the rod and the balance shafts.

I did the wiring myself and the engine assembly myself once I got everything back from the machine shop. I did everything I could to minimize costs without taking shortcuts or using subpar parts. Still cost quite a bit, more than I'd like to think about, but in the end it was worth whatever it was I ended up paying and more.

I can understand how this wouldn't be an easy choice. Keep us posted though!

yeah flordia is crazy, an 83 toyota similar to yours rust free down here in a little worse shape to yours, again rust free just had ripped seat, crack in the dash, but still very nice, sold for 4500... and it had 180k miles!

Ok, ... I'm down! lol... BUT, ................ It's GOTTA have a Supercharger and Nitrous! hehehehe... JK.

NO, really, I was stuck for a long time between the 1UZ, 3RZ and 7MGE...... I WOULD LOVE but don't really NEED 1UZ power.... I'm past the age of Burn outs on this thing... lol.......... especially this thing.. I've put too much into it to just trash it for fun, ya know? AND, ... 7MGE has great power too... not so great mileage on either, compared to the 3RZ, ...and my buddies TACO HAULED ARSE! lol... Of course, it WAS a Prerunner... but for a 3RZ I was surprised at the RPM it could take, pick up it had, ... mileage to boot. He said in that prerunner he'd get 27MPG's HWY, NO PROBLEM(if he babied it, 65 or so like you said).... 22 City all day long, on it a lil bit or not.

I'm REALLY wanting to do this... just not a good time RIGHT THIS MINUTE.. BUT, ..........eventually, and that could be next month, ya know? My life is just so sporadic with crises and drama(other peoples stuff, not really mine as much,..but it effects me, obviously, ahhaha)... and this swap would take time, and I HAVE to have it running as quickly as possible, ya know?

Buddy told me his 7MGE swap was VERY cake! Not much fitment issue with Efans, etc. LOVES the power.... I had a Cressida, and that thing HAULED ARSE for fairly stock... I was surprised, ya know?

Anyway, sorry for rambling... I WILL keep you in mind, buddy... and I DO wish you the best on all this, sounds heavy/but fun!

Thanks, JustDSM,
Yes, doing a little general mountaineering. Did Shasta last June, and backpacking to Half Dome in Yosemite on labor day weekend.
