Nice, that wiring looks clean. Kinda cool how swapping newer Toy motors into older toys usually still looks like it was there from stock. Good job!

Congrats Justin
I don't think I have ever had mine uP to 85...
I was thinking Radesign's might have a fix but he put the taco instrument cluster in his dash.
I wonder if Chilkat might have a work around...

Congratulations!!!, and doing 85. I didnt think these would do that. Bet that brought a smile to your face, it did mine seeing you having it going. The work you have put into this truck has got to be one great reward of all of your hard work.

CONGRATS again.

Justin, this is really nice. I have the same year, same color, almost same mileage (when you got it) truck, you are giving me inspiration. Mine doesn't look as good as yours when you got it! I have been collecting parts to convert to a black interior, mostly so I can add black aftermarket seats without it looking goofy. How did the kick panels turn out - still have the templates for those? Really interested in the carb to FI conversion, too. Mine will do 85 when it's falling....

Thanks, it was important to me to have a clean wiring job, and not to have things look like a rats nest under hood or even under the dash. I too love how modern motors look in old chassis's. It's got some sex appeal I must say :jessica:

I've still got access to the Taco cluster all this junk came from. So If worst comes to worst, I might just retrofit the Taco Tach behind the '83 cluster and give it a shot that way. I'll send Chilkat a email and see what they may have come across/heard about. Good idea!

It certainly doesn't like doing 85mph but it'll do it without much trouble. It likes 70-75. This thing is like a brick moving through the air!

Well hopefully you decide to get after your truck! These things may not be cheap to rebuild/restore/modify, but I can now say from experience that spending a little extra going through the effort and trouble of doing things right the first time really make for a much more enjoyable experience when it's all said and done. I think I'd like to go to a black interior too some day, but I'm pretty pleased with the brown/tan for now. It fits the Terra Cotta (sp?) exterior rather well I think. If the truck was any other color I'd probably have converted it to black by now though.

I never did finish the kick panels.. I'll get on those here very soon. I just got so wrapped up in other aspects of the truck that I never did have time to put into those. I need to pick up a seperate set of 5.25" speakers to put in there. I'm just trying to decide what to put in there and how I'll be re-doing the door panel cause they're getting tired.

Thanks Chef!!

Just a little update for those that may be interested in my "de-smogged" 3RZ swap. I've put a tank of gas through the truck. I've had it on the highway a good bit and it seems to like 70-75 as it's cruising "sweet spot". It'll go faster of course but I think I'd be wasting fuel trying to cruise at anything more than this. I do believe it's getting quite a bit better fuel economy than the 22R I had in there which is always nice. With my intake setup (all silencers removed and a open element filter) and the Magnaflow muffler it can be a little noisey on the interstate at speed. But it's quite comfortable cruising around the backroads.

The powerband is MUCH smoother, and overall it feels much more refined (duh!) than the 22R. Now some of you may remember I deleted the balance shafts as part of my rebuild, and there are a small ammount of vibes at idle but it's probably only 1/3 of how my 22R vibrated. My clutch has a little chatter on take off, but I've been putting quite a bit of city miles on it to break it in (along with the motor). I am in love driving this thing around in the city as I can accelerate with and even pass folks if need-be. The power is amazing. Sure it's no race-car, but this is all the power this truck would ever need. Anyhow..

I don't have a single CEL. I'm halfway throughthe 2nd tank, and we'll see how things go long-term, but I'm happy to report things are working just as I had hoped/planned.

Used a gift card to a local bike shop, and picked up a mount that will give my pooch some room in the bed when we take off to go have some fun..

justin: saw this thing about 3RZ power steering that Scuba just posted...not sure what year your engine is but thought it was something that you should be aware of in case you ever have problems with your PS

I guess it was a blessing in disguise when I misplaced that thing. I've been operating without it, which allowed me to use the '83 factory pressure hose, which just happens to have the same thread/pitch as the Taco pump allowing a bolt in installation.

I haven't found that I need the idle bump from that system with my 33x12.50's and stock steering. I've played a little offroad with it but I'll admit I haven't had it out in the rocks to really test it. But in the event that I do need a little extra RPM, I wired in one of my Carling Tech switches to the AC1 pin to ground it, which bumps my idle (for the A/C). It makes it nice when creeping down trails or when negotiating slightly technical terrain.

But thanks a bunch for looking out. I was a little bummed that I couldn't find that, but I'm not so bummed anymore

Couldn't help myself.. Had to take it out and have a little fun!! I should have aired down, but even with 32psi in the tires it didn't have too much trouble.

And a little video with me being embarassed at the end..

Thanks you guys! I hope everyone had a fantastic holidays and got to spend time with those they love, or at least doing things they love! I was fortunately able to acomplish both with some backcountry adventure.

Spent the first days of 2012 up in the hills!

Yeah.. Poor girl was a bit cold. She's a tough cookie and warmed up quick once we got on the trail.

Thanks again Chef! My buddy took the pic as we were heading out, and with the background I thought it was an awesome pic. Had to share.
