Sorry to hear about the freeze plugs. Sometimes in our anxiousness it bites us in the butt. I can understand that. Done things like that a few times.

Isnt that what Craigslist is known for? When you can afford it, the deals arent out there. I cant name the number of times I money and couldnt find something. When broke I find them all of the time.

An older guy that lives down the road from me has a 86 SR5 exteneded cab turbo with auto tranny. I tried to buy it before and he wouldnt sell. The other day, he had some work done to it and it was in his garage and caught fire. It ruined the cab, but the fenders and bed appear to be fine. I would like it as it is a rare truck and he took care of it. It would be some work, but I could do it. Think I could afford it now?? Not now, no way. When will something like this come up again? Urghhh!!

I think I'm going to fit it into my budget to pick up the IFS width axle. I might not be able to swing the V6 housing, which isn't going to kill me, because I cant afford to get the gears, locker, setup kit right now anyway, but I could use the extra 3" width! I've had the wheel spacers sitting in my garage FOREVER now for the front end.. Maybe the extra width will help the OME rear to flex a bit due to the extra leverage the IFS width axle would put on the springs. Maybe I'm just wishing though.. I'm not sure how much extra leverage 1.5" would give.. But anyhow..

I was pretty upset with myself about botching the freeze plugs. I couldn't even look at the truck after I found that. I guess I just had my hopes up for wrapping this project up without a hickup, but how realistic would that be.. So I chilled out and relaxed for the rest of the evening. Came home yesterday to find some goodies on the doorstep, so I got excited again.. And here I thought I'd grown up... I'm still a kid. I know this because I get excited when the Santa in the brown uniform drops stuff off to me!!

Hella E-Code housings w/ Hella 55w/100w bulbs

Installed with the 500FF driving lights

Walbro 190lph fuel pump

On top of that WitchHunter called back, and the injectors should be back soon enough! Ordered the new freeze plugs (but I think I already mentioned that). So hopefully things wont be delayed too much..

Ohh.. I should also report that last night I "powered up" the truck for the first time since stripping it all down. I am happy to report that there were ZERO issues with the wiring. The headlight circuit works fine with the upgraded harness I integrated into the rewired truck. Although I learned a 10A fuse isn't enough to power two 100watt highbeam bulbs. That popped instantly. The 10A did fine in the 55watt lowbeams though. Thats the stock fuse amperage rating and wattage so I had no doubts that was fine.

I was using my front marker lights as turn signals temp. after I had installed my Addicted bumper. Well I had just forgotten about them there and they've been like that since summer. It had always bothered me they were like that.. So I soldered on the orignal connectors to the marker lights, and plugged them back in. Happy to report the marker lights work as they're supposed too..

I picked up some trailer marker lights at OReilly's the other day. Little amber lights with black housings. $2-3 bucks each. I mounted them to the radiator support out of the way so they're protected by the bumper. Re-wired those into the turn signal circuit and was happy to have some actual turn signals again.

Washer pump works, windshield wipers work, everything works! I was quite pleased I must say.

The only wiring left is to integrate a few wires from the chassis harness into the engine harness via the IK2 plug and run the 12v+ wire to the fuel pump. I'll be chopping off the IK2 plug from the Tacoma's interior harness so I can have a fully plug-n-play 3RZ engine harness in the event I ever need to replace it.

Surprised the headlight fuse blew, before I did my HID's (converting back to H4's or projector) I was running the 55/100w headlights...

So you bought the transmission etc right? I hate it when things like that come up, missed out on some great deals because I was 'responsible'

The stock fuses (left and right headlights) in the '83 fuse box now are there soley for the 12v leads to power the 'upgraded' relay's (pin 86) I've put under the hood. The lights are triggered off the (-) from the switch by completing the circuit (pin 85), powering the coil of the relay. I've then taken power directly from the batter to the common terminal of the relay (pin 30), which feeds the headlights low or highbeam depending (pin 87). I've got a fuse wired inline between the battery and pin 30. And being the stock fuse rating was 10A I threw 10A fuses in.. Lowbeams worked like a champ. Flipped on high's and POP. Put in a 20A and was good to go.. Were you running factory wiring, or did you have a upgrade harness too?

I'm going to have to pass on the trans even though I want it BAD. I just don't want to delay this project any more converting the cases to 23spline. Not to mention having to find another belhousing off a 2005+ Tacoma which would be next to impossible around here. So I'm going to stick with the good ole' W56.

I want to get that whole 4Runner and make it into something, but I've already got more than my hands full with this thing. I'll be happy enough when I can get this thing back on the road. Last thing I need is another project..

You know, I totally forgot that I had headlight issues when I first bought my truck..I am running a PIAA H4/relay wiring kit, it is only powered off the passenger side wiring, the factory d/s wiring isn't even hooked up.

I hear you on the having to pass on the transmission. Projects...my house/honey do list is so long I am lucky to get 'quality time' with my '81 every now and then...

How do you like the Hella headlights? I was looking into getting a set for my 86.

They light up my garage door pretty good with a weak battery

In all honesty I couldn't really report on them yet.. Other than the quality of the housing is fantastic. I'll have to wait until this is back on the road for a actual review of the light output. However based on the reviews of others, I'd say they're a safe bet and you can be assured you're getting the best.

Let us know if you get them and how you like them!

Thanks for getting back to me. I'd seen reference to that little device. I'd also seen ONE reference to someone mentioning the 10K ohm resistor mod worked on a '83 w/ a twin-coil. I've emailed him, but I haven't heard back from him. We'll see how things work out..

Other than that, Not much new to report.. Got the fuel lines ran. Had to replace a freeze plug due to leaking. I ended up having to yank the motor back out to get to it properly.. Used some Permatex No. 1 this time to seal things up.

Pulled the input shaft bearing retainer off the W56-C and checked out the bearings and seal. Seal looked a little dry, but the bearings looked good. I was pleased to find NSK/Nachi bearings being the red RTV clearly says this things been apart before. But all looks good on the inside!

Got some Carling Tech switches for my "GreenTruck" panel. Quite excited about these!

Got the hole cut in the firewall for the engine harness. Not going to lie, I paused and thought about it for a second. This is the first hole this truck has had put in it.. But it had to be done..

Integrated the engine harness into the chassis harness. Put the battery in the truck, and put the fuses in.. Plugged in the OBD-II scanner, and everything's working 100%! First try! I'm stoked!!

Finalized the drivers side underhood wiring..

Got the switched installed in the dash panel. Man I love these switches! The model I got has the upper lights on with the parking lights, the lower light automatically comes on when the swtich and accessory circuit are active, so you know it's "on".

I fiddled and farted around with it for a few hours, but nothing worth taking a picture of.. It's getting very close to being final!

I couldn't agree more.

This is exactly the way I would want my truck done. Nice work!

Dang I need to read more of the pre-84 section more often. Great build as many have said before. The 3RZ info is great. I will have one in my 85 one day. Keep up the fantastic work!!
