JustDSM's '83 SR5 Build up Thread

Well, it seems like it's been damn near forever since I've updated this thread. Haven't had a whole lot to report really. I was just waiting for the call from the machine shop.. Well, I got that call, and it is looking like I'll have my engine back tomorrow. It's got me so excited! I can't wait to start the reassembly.
I've had odds and ends coming in here and there, but I figured I'd get a picture of most of the stash. I just ended up piling all the gaskets/o-rings on top of each other. I wouldn't have had enough room on the table to get everything layed out. Besides, how exciting is a picture of a bunch of gaskets??
But anyhow.. Here's a little visual stimulation:

Thats pretty much every gasket/seal/o-ring for a 3RZ to include some hard parts.
If all goes as planned and I have the Block, Crank, Rods, Pistons, Flywheel, and Head back tomorrow I'll certainly have LOTS of pics to report back with! See you guys soon.. Hopefully it'll be on the trail with my 3RZ powered '83!

I'm so excited.. Machine shop just has to press in the balance shaft bearings, and put a final polish on the crankshaft journals (from it sitting around). So I'll be heading out to pick those up here very shortly.
I went by to drop off my intake manifold to have them hot tanked and bead blasted. Found out that everything else was done! I was EXCITED!
Here's the "new" head I picked up, all cleaned up, rebuilt and ready to rock!

The rods.. Three are the orignal, I had to pick up one on eBay because it was so thrashed. The rods had LC Engineering Pin Bushings installed, had them all resized to the same length, balanced. They'll be spinning on Calico CT-1 Coated bearings for all the benefits they offer.

A few goodies.. The crank and accessory pullies were bead-blasted and was balanced. The front timing cover was bead-blasted, and had the oil relief valve shimmed to keep the motor running a slightly higher base oil pressure. The increased oiling should help when I'm idling along in the hot desert sun when oil pressure is at it's lowest. It's all ready for the new Aisin water pump, and oil pump cover/gear-set.

Here is a little snapshot of the Aisin HD pressure plate, resurfaced/balanced OEM flywheel and all the other goodies.

Many more pics coming! I'll have the assembly documented, and I've got a fellow YotaTech-er coming by tomorrow morning to help with the re-assembly. It'll be a good day for sure! Maybe I'll even have it dropped in the truck

Picked up the block yesterday evening and had to do put in a little work.. I was just too darn excited after all this time (and $) to let it sit until this morning!
Started by getting everything masked off..

Cleaned up the tape a bit..

And installed my "triple gold" freeze plugs

I called it a night after that.. I wanted to play some XBOX BF3/MW3!

Made some progress with the help of a fellow YotaTech member. Thanks so much for your help Rick. I couldn't have done all this today myself. Your patience, keen eye, and help cleaning all the nuts/bolts really helped out greatly.
First thing this morning, while waiting for the help to arrive, I did the hardest task of the day.. I had RADesigns make me this nifty little plug to fill the dipstick hole in the Tacoma front cover since the T100 uses a block mounted filler. I thought this was a much cleaner solution than just stuffing the hole with some RTV.

The helped arrived right on time, so we got busy with the mains..

Dropped the crank in, felt like it was sliding on glass. Rotates SMOOTH!

Started messing around with the timing components.. Took a little while to figure out how I was going to do this, since I was deleting the balance shafts, and the factory manual isn't "idiot proof" so I had to look at it 4, 5 or maybe 10 times
to get a grasp.. I ended up installing some of the balance shaft's componentry to keep from bleeding all the oil pressure from the front main bearing. These components act like a restrictor and lube the timing chain area. This will keep the oiling system "stock" in a sense, with the exception of the balance shaft bearings being installed out of time to effectively seal off those oiling holes..

Things started to get exciting when I started putting on nice clean aluminum parts! Freshly bead-blasted front cover with a shimmed oil relief valve, and a new OEM oil pump gear-set and cover.

Once that was on, things started to get real!

Thats where we left off today.. Took a bit longer than expected, but thats in part to the piston ring compressor we picked up at AutoZone breaking on the very first compression attempt.. Lesson learned. Even if it's a one time use tool, just get a quality tool to begin with.. So we had to head over to NAPA to get something a little more robust. We were able to get the pistons installed then with little issue.
Beyond that, torquing the headbolts was a fun job.. Torque to 29ft/lbs, turn 90* and then another 90*..
But all said and done, made some good progress I think. I can't wait to get this thing sitting in the engine bay of the truck!

Made a little progress this morning.. Couldn't sleep with this thing in the garage calling my name

Maybe I'm itching to drop it in.. Hopefully I'll have some time here soon to knock that out. In the mean time the Marlin Dual Case adapter has been ordered! And I need to do something with that dirty valve cover.. I've got an idea for that..
Also one of my pics has a "boo-boo" I made.. The first person to catch it gets a prize!

Started on the wiring with the little daylight I had left after getting home from work. Routing the new starter/alternator wire as well as the upgraded headlight wiring. I'll be integrating my own custom headlight relay harness into the the wiring harness of the truck. I've been waiting on my order from http://www.waytekwire.com so I could start this aspect of the swap. This weekend I'm hoping to have the wiring completed this weekend along with dropping the motor into the engine bay.
