looking great Justiin.

might as well spend sometiime on that left side of the engine compartment while you are in there

I saw some videos of RaDesign's 2RZ in the snow and he loves it...the 3RZ is gonna have a little more kick to it..

The motor looks great. Great job. I know you are just itching to get it in there. First time you drive it with the extra power will be a rush.

On another forum I was asked about why I was "de-smogging" my 3RZ:

My Response:
To be honest, there really isn't a overwhelming reason why anyone 'should' so it's really up to the end user of the rig.

But the 3RZ is pretty minimalistic in the SMOG department anyhow so I'll only be eliminating the EGR and EVAP.

As far as why I'm doing it.. When I was tearing the motor down for the rebuild I had almost a 1/4" of build-up from the EGR and EVAP purging into the intake creating a thick coat of crud. It undoubtably was affecting the performance of the motor choking off airflow. The motor had 155K miles on it when I picked it up and I do not look forward to having that crap build back up again. In addition to that it greatly simplified the wiring of the truck allowing me to retain the orignal wiring for all the lights and stuff. And being that the truck's wiring was virgin before I tore into it, it had zero issues and everything worked as it should so I figured why mess with it. It also afforded me the ability to wire the engine in virtually stand-alone very similar how you'd wire in a 22RE into the truck. I'd imagine the method I'm using isn't much more difficult than wiring in a 22RE.

But as you mentioned, the space taken by the Tacoma's EVAP and Fuse Box is just crazy. I need 3 resistors for the EVAP box, and 2 relays and a fuse or two for the fuse box. I just said to hell with wasting all that space and added complexity (even if it's minimal).

So thats my speil..

Here's a few pics with some wiring.. Made some good progress on Turkey Day. I'm about 99% postive I'll be dropping it in the engine bay this weekend.

Started with this mess:

Just about finished the passenger side underhood wiring to include the upgraded headlight wiring. Just waiting on my Hella E Code housings/bulbs to show up.

Soldering on the headlight wiring. I pulled the factory wiring from the drivers side underhood wiring to eliminate unneeded wiring. Since my relays are on the passengers side (near the battery) I've routed the headlight wiring over that way. I'm using the power lead/fuse for the "Left" headlight and the low beam (-) from the factory switch to trigger the coil, and I've run 14awg wire to the Low Beam of the ceramic H4 socket. I used the "Right" power lead/fuse for the high beam.. It makes it easier for my dumb self to remember that way I grounded the common lead right there on the radiator support with a existing bolt hole with a 6mmx1.0 nut.

Here is the "Circuit Opening Relay" I mentioned earlier.. This is the only piece I really needed out of the interior of the Tacoma for the way I'm wiring my truck. It's not a simple relay, so instead of figuring out how I could mymic it's function, I just snipped it out of the Tacoma harness and will wire it up.. Not going to try and re-invent the wheel here. It's located on the passenger side kick-panel. I chose this location since the factory harness runs out of the back of the cab on this side and will add the fuel pump power lead to this existing harness.

Started to clean things up a bit as I finished most of the circuits.. Most of the wiring at this point in done. Just a few final connections and it'll be ready!

Thanks Rob!

Yeah man, watching his video really made me itch to get this thing back on the road!! I only wish I had some snow in my neck of the woods like you guys in the PNW get.

I've been trying to find a job back in WA.. I spent my teenage years in Tacoma 'growing up' so I've got that primal urge to want to go back and it's been nagging me for a while. If I ever get up that way we'll have to go wheel!!!

I have got the itch to get wheeling again too, I should get time this weekend to clean up my bed bob and get the tail lights mounted again. I can trailer it up to the mountain

It would be awesome if you made it back to the PNW, lots of YT'ers in oregon and washington to go wheeling with.

Saw this in your thread on the other forum about shocks:

I was gonna order the 5150's when i ordered my suspension from Wabbit and he could have made some extra $$ and said to get the 5125's. They are a great set of shocks. They ride well, even for a SA truck my ride is half way decent.

Look forward to seeing this thing fire up soon..

I did this just for 'you' :

I have a feeling next weekend I'll have it running.. I shouldn't have put off ordering the fuel pump so long and sending the injectors to WitchHunter.. Those two things are whats holding me up from starting it this weekend. Have a good time wheelin' man.. Take some pics!

I am curious how those shocks would do over the OME shocks on the OME springs.. Hmm.. I'm not sure I wan't to really experiment and spend any more money on the OME setup though.. I'd really like to get a All-Pro or similar kit.. I just don't want to get the truck much if any higher than it is now though..

Well I worked on the wiring a good bit today.. I've pretty much got it "done" I've got all the wires bundled ready to integrate into the 3RZ engine harness via the IK2 plug. I'll chop that from the Tacoma interior harness and integrate it into my chassis harness so the engine harness will be a true plug-n-play in the event I ever have to replace/swap it.

It might not look like much was done.. But I spent the better part of today working on it minus the two instances of rain we had today.

It's starting to look like a wiring harness again, instead of a birds nest!!

I dont blame you for removing the smog. Looks to me it is just that more of a burden on the engine and what I have had to clean out from before due to a EGR. It is nearly the first thing I block off.

That takes some patience on wiring. I can do basic wiring, just never really understood how to wire what part to what wire. Looking good.

Having those 2 parts holding you can be frustrating. Atleast there is always something else to do. Doing great. Looking forward to seeing you getting this going.

I saw that your EGR port was basic crusted over solid. That's crazy! This motor wasn't quite like that, but it was nasty.. I used 2-3 cans of carb cleaner and a brass brush scrubbing it away, and my pressure washer too.. I got most of it out, but I eventually broke down and took it to the machine shop and had them hot tank it and bead blast it. I just wouldn't feel right having that nasty thing go back on my new engine! I'm with you.. Block the EGR off step 1!

In all honesty I would never be able to tackle this wiring if it wasn't for my car audio/security installation background (prior to the service). I'm thankful I took on that job in my younger years. It really has enabled me to tackle projects I probably wouldn't be able to do now.

So.. Made some progress today!

Relocated the Clutch Slave Cylinder hard-line.. Not the prettiest. I had a hell of a time bending the stock bends back out of the line.. I finally got pissed off and just muscled it into roughly the shape I wanted it. I haven't trimmed it and reflared it yet as I'm going to mock up the W59 bellhousing and see where I need to mount the relocated bracket.

Then.........

I was curious how I was going to route the heater core hoses so I did some looking at what hoses I had (I've got the Tacoma's and the Hilux's). I've also got the little "valve" thingy from my Hilux, another from a '87, and the Tacoma's. The Tacoma's wont work due to the side actuation. The '87 would work. The difference is the top 'port' on the '83 valve points towards the passenger side. The '87 points to the drivers side. They'll mount in the same location without having to drill/tap any new holes. Anyhow.. With the '83 valve I found that I should be able to make it work using a combination of the '83's hoses and the Tacoma's. I'd like to research what others have done/used, but I think this will work out quite alright..

Here's the "key" hose for the method I found. Using the lower section of the hose pictured gives you the formed bends to go from the upper port of the "valve" to the hardline on the 3RZ.

It's a crappy picture, but here you can roughly see the planned install useage of that hose:

Lookin good! Do you have that engine bolted in yet? It looks a little lop sided in the pics above, like it's leaning toward the passenger side.

I tore out the engine from my 4runner in what started out as a routine head gasket/timing chain job. Now it's going to be a complete rebuild since the #2 cylinder is gouged a little. I got it apart today and it's going to the machine shop Monday. Thanks to lesson learned from doing yours, I feel confident in doing this one. Thanks again!

The motor looks great. Looks like the modern version that they would of put in had they kept up this style truck. I imagine the extra power will be nice. Great job and looking good.

I'm happy to hear you're rocking it over there. I am really thankful for your help. Any special plans for the motor in the 4Runner? Don't hesitate to give me a ring if you need a hand!

Thanks Chef! You know videos will be forth-coming as soon as this thing is running. I'm planning to record it's first crank

Get the 3RZ and I'll head out to Cali and have All-Pro put on their kit while we knock yours out!

Thanks man! I think it looks pretty trick in there knowing this engine was probably just an idea in someone's head around the time these trucks were being manufactured. Something about modern engines in old vehicles has a sex appeal I dig

Thanks man! I'm trying like hell!

But the bad news is I'm going to have to pull it, and the flywheel back off (which means new flywheel bolts) since the bolts are Torque To Yield. Not to mention buy a new set of freeze plugs. I had a feeling it was going to bite me, since I accidently got 2 of the freeze plugs cocked sideways when I was driving them in. I didn't use any sealant (I normally do, but I didn't have any handy and it was late) so I just drove them home.. And yesterday they were weeping with just coolant sitting in the motor (not even under pressure) so I'm going to have to replace them.. And to make sure I do it right, I'm going to swallow it, and man up to my mistake and fix it. Thankfully I didn't have the drivetrain installed yet (and I was about too!) so it's just simply removing the motor mount bolts, and a few misc things, and out it'll come just as easy as it dropped in..

But to finish things up on a positive note, the MAF adaptor came in and looks like a fairly decent piece for a Ebay part. It's cast aluminum and mates up with the MAF rather well. No obstructions of airflow so it should work out pretty good.. Once I get the motor back in I'm going to trim off the air intake silencer off the factory inlet pipe, reinstall the factory rubber section and MAF, and see how much filter I can fit.. Then I'll be able to order up something. I'll go with a dry element filter as I'm not a fan of oiled setups running a hot-wire MAF. They always end up coating the sensing element and screwing with the readings..

The Hella E-Code housings/bults (55w low beams/100w high beams) showed up today. I'll drop those in and complete the headlight wiring (2 wires).

Mounted some Hella 500FF Driving Lights on the bumper.. I'll have to wire up a circuit for those as they were a unplanned addition to this project (at least at this point in time). I have to say it gives the truck a little more purposeful look. I like!

Fuel pump should be here shortly, and then I can start bending up some lines to get this thing ready to fire up.

I was a little bit PO'd when I found my freeze plugs were leaking and with a few other daily life stressors I wasn't in the mood to even look at the truck yesterday. But it was probably a good thing because I had been toying with it non-stop since Thanksgiving, getting little odds and ends taken care of..

Hopefully the new set of freeze plugs gets here shortly (LC Engineering is just a few hours drive) and I can be back on the road to progress, instead of fixing stuff that shouldn't need fixing..

Frustration Venting Post:

Why must a R151F tranny, T-Case and Complete rear axle w/ V6 housing come up for sale for pennies on the dollar in comparison to normal asking prices when I'm in the last stretch of my project (and almost out of money)?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

Guy in town is parting out a '86 Turbo 4Runner for CHEAP. It's in great condition. Just has a blown headgasket and he's pulled off the turbo setup to keep. Other wise its basicly complete!
