just bought a 4runner today -- 1993 5 speed w/181k miles

the interior's in pretty rough shape:
the carpet in the cargo area's ripped up and it's super dirty
no left rear seat
4" rip in drivers seat
the pocket on the back of drivers seat is ripped
left wall of cargo area has a 4" crack
button thing to put left rear seat forward is broken, but still works
no passenger visor
passenger power door lock button's broken in, but still works
ac has a leak so it's been disconnected
probably more that i have yet to find...

body/tires' not too bad:
left corner light doesn't light up when i turn the headlights on
needs to be aligned

engine:
rear anti-lock light is on
engine check light is on
burning rubber smell, belts too tight?
needs new air filter, k&n - good or bad?
might need a new timing belt sometime in the near future

paid $1500..

Lets see, for my $850 I got a 1987 22r pickup with 180,000 miles and...

A fuel guage... that doesn't work.
Steering wheel mounted horn controls... that don't work.
Dashboard mounted horn controls... for a second horn... from radioshack.
Rust.
A heater that works! With 4 fan settings... that don't work.
4 dash mounted vent locations... full of leaves.
Rust.
Driver and passenger seat belt retractors... that don't work.
A hydraulic Clutch... that squeaks every time you press it.
A whisper quiet exhaust system... full of holes.
Rock solid W55 Transmission... with a bad main bearing whine.
Bad shocks.
Rust.

My personal favorite is that one of my headlight housings rusted apart, and I replaced it from one I got out of a junkyard, not knowing that at some point in the late 80s Toyota reversed the positions of the mounting screws. No big deal, I just put it in upside down, square headlight, right? Except that every time I hit the high beams, one goes up, and one goes down. My truck is crosseyed.

4Runner: cv boot (fixing this weekend), blower motor, rear brakes shot (this weekend), rear bumper shot, auto tranny not quite right, need coolant flush, cap rotor plugs, shocks, rear springs, need spare mounted, not sure if AC works, drivers door sometimes does not open from inside,

Pickup: need 4wd fenders (have 2wd working for now), Trailer wiring harness shot, fog lights, clutch soon, shocks, rear leafs, brake light is always on,

All I can think of for now...

Rear (now front) ring and pinion is broken from last weekend's wheeling and the cam/spring that aids in the tailgate movement doesn't work at all. I can't even open my tailgate more than a quarter way now.
Wire pulled out of O2 sensor wheeling too.

clutch!

I'll try bleeding first, I hope it is just hydraulics being finicky (they're much easier to replace than dropping the trans to replace the arm).

It was a bit bizarre. The hydraulics appeared to be fine. I went through a couple of passes in bleeding the clutch just to be sure. The fluid came out fairly clean (I'm sure it was bled earlier this year when I had the transmission rebuilt).

Afterwards, I fired it up, was kind of grumpy about going into first so I tried other gears and it worked fine, so I tried first again and all was good.

I'll run it by the transmission shop (yay warranty) just to make sure everything is on the up'n'up.

Parked my 1985 4Runner in 2005. Cranked it over this past spring. Everything is wrong with it - gummed fuel system, no brakes, interior is about a 6 or 7, needs new fenders (fiberglass replacements I think). I just can't bear to sell it. I've got a new fuel pump and repaired my sending unit. I'm looking for a good deal on a fuel tank (poly preferably). Then new fuel lines and see if it will run. Maybe then an engine rebuild. Any suggestions? The frame is good and solid.

Diff plug stuck in housing, Have tried grinding a slot in the middle and tapping around with cold chisel but won't budge
Drivers window winder mechanism just spins around, window has to be pushed up and down
3 out of 4 doors have major rust on the bottoms - bad enough I pushed holes in it with my finger..
Steering alignment is so far out the steering wheel is sideways for straight
Brakes have vibration after fitting new pads and not getting new discs/machining discs
Extractors and entire exhaust system leaks sounds like a ty old tractor coming down the road
