I have a 87 4Runner that’s been sitting for several years. A fresh battery, draining fuel tank, blowing out the fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs and wire I can get it to start and running for a second and then it dies. I was thinking it might be a timing problem but wanted to ask someone else’s opinion.
"Start and run for a few seconds then dies" is the classic sign of a VAF-COR problem. And it's the easiest to diagnose. Jumper FP to B+ in the diagnostic connector (this forces the fuel pump to run with key-on). If it runs now, you have a problem in the VAF-COR circuit.
Does your pump come on? I know you said you drained the tank, blew out the lines, replaced the filter and pump, but are you actually getting fuel after doing all of that? You're getting spark if it's firing up, so it's no air or no fuel stopping it from continuing to run I would think.
The "easy" way to check whether the pump is moving fuel is to replace the fuel return line from the FPR with 6mm/1/4" vinyl tubing, place it into a suitable container, and run the fuel pump with FP to B+. There is no spec, but I get about 1/2 liter/min. If that "test" passes, try to start. If the fuel flow cuts off, you may not have enough flow out of the pump to hold the pressure in the rail.
(The fuel return line is low-pressure, so you can remove and replace it with the hose clamp. The high-pressure connections are sealed with crush washers, which must be replaced each time they're opened. Why bother with that?)
That's it?
Even if you keep on running the fuel pump with "FP to B+" ?

Does the check engine light (CEL) work? It should come on when you turn the key to ON, but not START. If the CEL works, check for codes. That involves shorting a couple of pins in the diag connector (not sure which ones on an '87 - someone here can probably help) and counting flashes.
If the CEL doesn't work, fix that first so you can check for diagnostic codes. Diagnostics on these engines are not sophisticated, but can be helpful.
