Starting issues

1988 up 4wd manual 4cyl
Occasionally will not start the cllck of a rely comes from behind the glove box not the relay on the fender well. Are there two relays? Ok a couple more hours and I might have this whipped.
My daughter (it's her pickup) put a piece of rug on the floor as a floor mat. If you gently push the clutch in the truck doesn't start just get the relay noise from behind the glovebox, stomp the clutch in like you mean it and no problem starting. Tomorrow I will look for adjustment in the clutch switch.

Funny if it is the clutch switch you should not even get the relays dropping out .

The clutch safety switch allows the coil in the starter relay to ground closing the contacts in the starter relay allowing it to crank.

Jump the clutch switch see if it cranks every time !!

If it does then you can try and adjust it .

First thing removed on all mine

How about trying to use the clutch safety cancel to see if it cranks...

HOWEVER, even if you get the above figured out, I guarantee you there will still a problem with that model:

I just ran a secondary jump wire directly from the battery to the starter with a button in my dash. Like a redneck.

The starter itself? or the starter solenoid?
That is a good troubleshooting method that identified the problem - the wrong wiring of the starter relay.
The non-redneck fix is here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post52297396

You know I have all the parts in a box to fix that starter relay issue.

I just can`t as long as things work just fine.

I can`t see how it would improve the life of the solenoid contacts and plungers I change on a regular basis do to my driving style

10 miles total driving with at least 5 starts or more almost every day.

Long Story Short...

1988 22RE?
Long Story Short:
1) Verify that the starter solenoid, contacts and motor are good (THIS WAY), AND...
repeat: AND, not OR.
2) Fix the starter relay problem THIS WAY.

Ok folks this one was a simple fix, an adjustment of the clutch sensor switch. The switch itself may be failing because he adjustment was counterintuitive. I assumed adjustment needed to out in order to make earlier contact and that actually made matters worse. When the switch is fully depressed contact is lost, so the switch needed to be adjusted to be in the middle of its contact range when the clutch is depressed. On the positive side the adjustment is made the truck is starting so I can get back to the regular maintenance and repairs.
Thanks for the responses to my original question and the creative solutions made available, and another thank you to yotatech for hosting.

Straight to the starter solenoid. The small clip-on style plug on the bottom of the starter assy rather than the bigger loop connection that comes straight from the battery anyway.

Good job on the clutch safety switch adjustment.
However, your truck still has the starter relay wired wrong. See above posts ^^^.
