My 22re on several occasions has had the starter continue to run after the truck starts. It only happens after the truck has not been started for many days. When it happens I shut it off and it’s fine on the next start. No indication that any wiring has been modified. Not outdoor temp dependent, truck is garaged now. Seems like a relay or solenoid could be sticking or something like that. I have tried nothing...any ideas?
You can check the voltage output by the relay to the solenoid. If you still have power after the key is returned to the run position it is not the starter/solenoid, if you don't have power it's the starter/solenoid.
But being its intermittently doing it that's going to be hard to check I imagine. Might be best off just pulling the starter to get eyes on it and clean it up to see if the problem goes away.

Thanks. I did a google search after I posted this and found lots of evidence pointing to starter contacts. In my experience they have just failed and never run on, but if I’m going to pull it I might as well be prepared to replace them so I just ordered some off eBay. The fact that it only occurs after the truck has sat a long period makes me wonder about the mechanical pivot in the starter possibly sticking so I’ll check that closely also. No idea the age of this starter but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s original.

Mine did the same thing one night when I was leaving work -- it got hung up running the starter even after the engine was started. This happened about a week or 2 after it began intermittently clicking without turning the engine over. Fortunately, my new starter contacts came in that day, so I hopped on it that night as soon as I got home. Here's the old original contacts next to the new 4Crawler contacts. It's been 5 months and about 5k miles and I can confidently say that this completely fixed the issue.

Actually after you release the ignition key, there should already be nothing to keep starter relay, starter solenoid, and starter motor on. IF the starter solenoid were causing it I wonder how shutting the engine off by turning IGN off would also turn solenoid off - unless the issue is with the ignition switch ST1 contacts.
However, I agree abut inspecting the solenoid contacts as mentioned above^^^.

I agree there should be no electrical reason for it too run on. The run-on symptoms are common based on my internet and YouTube research.
The reason it runs on seems to be mechanical, with the edge of the plunger hanging up on the worn edge of the contact instead of overlapping correctly.
But we’ll see when I get it apart.
