Well, California smog law reads; anything aftermarket is illegal. Catback exhaust is ok but must be under 95db, and have cats in tact. No intakes (unless C.A.R.B approved with #), front mounts, BOV, catless pipes, larger throttle bodies....etc. When you go to the smog station to get your rig tested, they are "certified" and look under the hood, exhaust, etc and make sure it's all OEM. If it's not, they turn you away and WILL NOT smog test you.
mine is going to be registered in Mono county, where it only has to pass smog when ownership is transferred, so unless I sell it, once it passes smog the first time I don't have to worry about it ever again. would love to work on putting in those mods and boosting mileage.

I must say that is one of the cleaniest/ best looking 3rd gen I have ever seen. Beautiful truck. I had white 1990 with blue graphics that I sold about a decade ago and have been distraught ever since. That is exactly what I have been searching the entire U.S. for over the last year for. Don't ever sell it.

Thanks! I'm the second owner and it won't be leaving my possession. Hang on to that clean 4runner you picked up recently too!

HEY, .... if you're going to the mall.. You'll need a Vespa, 235/70/15's and an offload hitch carrier for the Vespa to sit on the back... (Could even put the Hoveround on there!! ) hahaha...

SICK, BRUDDA, .... JUST SICK!

Must be the 'Yotatechy' intuition I've developed while CONSTANTLY hunting gremlins(Yeah, it makes you sit quietly and watch for them to peek their head out.... causing one to be VERY observant and intuitive! hehehee)

By the way.. the latter.... 'SICK, JUST SICK!'... I mean it, that thing is so nice! And red, too! hahaha.

Hmmmmm... Was it better before?

I'm finding it bizarre how I get like 12-City and 20+ Hwy! lol..... But then, around town, where I am, I sit still more than rolling, then roll UP hills every time I'm done down there...

Gonna post up my results from this tank, but LOTS of it was sitting at idle and monkeying in the garage, so we'll see.

Sup with deez 87's, Blake? lol.

WOWOWOW But that's with 36's and 4.88's, ...hmmmm. Still, seems lower than normal for highway, eh?

Heres my latest mpg for my 22re powered with 35's BFG MT KM2 4:88 gears on 4" TG straight front axle.
I drove 276.2 since my last fill-up and put in 12.160 gallons to the click and I came out at 22.71 mpg and the motor burns oil but everything else is fine as a daily driver

I've been fixing my poor veezy up a bit... and mileage is improving. 16mpg city, 19hwy now. With 32x11.5s, manual trans, and 5.29 gears!

I bet I could get 22mpg hwy if I had a bit lower rpms. (3-4000 is a bit much all day long) and maybe city would be better if I didn't drive it like I stole it.

I always shift at 3000, 4-5000 when I'm angry.

It's also because the engine has 218,000 original miles on it, and is nearing the end of it's life. I have a 3.4 / manual conversion going into it in a month or so, should get a bit better.

Recently purchased '87 4runner, 22re, 4x4, 5-speed, 14gal tank (which is funny since OG owners manual says it's 17.2!)

Tank 1: Philly to Upstate, NY, all Highway (225mi), 1 day of commuting (60mi): 285mi Total

Tank 2: Upstate, NY to Chicopee MA round-trip (120mi), a week of in-town driving (176mi) 296mi Total

So far It's looking like between 20-21MPG combined.

I attribute the fact that I got better mileage on tank two with LESS highway driving to the fact that on my first trip from Philly to NY, I was literally learning to drive stick on the way HAHAHA. Now that I got it down, I hope to keep it in the 18city/22-24HWY range if I can manage.

I average about 16 mpg if I stay below 70. That's about half city/ half hwy.
The worst is 10 or 11 wheeling a few times.
The best was about 21 when i first got the truck on bald 31's doing about 60 for 300 miles on the highway.
I still have the o2 sensors it had when I bought it which are probably the originals with 235k miles.
I get happy when I get over 225 miles on a tank without the low fuel light coming on. (sigh)
