That's great, Medic! Happy for ya, man. I know my PU's always got a lil better mileage than my 4Runners(weight I suppose)... But that's pretty good when you're saying 'you're all over the skinny pedal', hahaha.

That's a trip on the gearing/rpm. I think I'm running around 3100rpm at 70 in 5th... But I'm only running 4.30's.. and you're running 4.88's ???? Hmmm. Those are 31's, right?

seeing pfmedic's iPhone app got me searching for an android one.
Looks like aCar is extremely detailed. It'll give you service reminders.. and everything.
I'm going to start using it today.

The app is called roadtrip and its an incredibly simple and indispensable tool. The free version lets you keep track of one vehicle. I am going to upgrade soon.

I'm using an Android app called Fuelly (www.fuelly.com) which I find to pretty cool. It allows you to see other users mpg.
I haven't used it on the 4Runner yet as it's not running so my mpg is zero!
LOL Although once I start tracking I'll probably have similar drive conditions to you as I commute on the San Francisco peninsula.

I just got 16 mpg mixed city/freeway. 3vz, 33s, no lift and 4.88 gears. Manual hubs made a world of difference. I have a front locker so all my drivetrain was MOVING with no manual hubs and killed my mileage... 13 mpg

Seems like most of us get decent mileage here. I can get 15-17 city and 20-22 highway as well depending on speed, how fast accelerate, what rpm I shift at and more. Wouldn't mind seeing it improve a little with the top off in the summer. Not sure how much weight that is. I also use fuel additive once in a while to keep fuel system clean and to improve mpg a lil bit.

Trying to tell people how to post on a Toyota thread and you have a picture of Jeep for your profile? Pretty funny though...

About a month ago I posted about getting 10mpg and have been working on it ever since. I changed out the gears from 4:10 to 4:88 and that made an improvement to about 16mpg. Then I tackled the fuel delivery system. Changed a handful of ancient stock holes for clean and tight ones. Put a few bottles of carb cleaner fuel treatment through and then a couple bottles of seafoam. Seemed to work well. Now I'm getting 19mpg city and around 24mpg highway.... MUCH better. I also saw a program on myth busters (both actually) and found that the most fuel efficient truck had a net tailgate, So I got one of those and it improved a bit more. I wouldn't say it's significant, but the numbers are higher which is always good when talking about fuel economy. Now if I can just find away around the "laws" so I can use improved technology like a modern carburator and a handful of aftermarket (not OEM) parts, I could get around 30+mpg, alas it's illegal here in California. Something I truely don't understand. Better fuel economy, LESS emitions, thus using less resources from earth to accomplish the same task...yet it's illegal. Any ideas or action that HAS worked for any of you? Thanks for reading, have a great week.

Just filled up today and calculated 18.6 mpg, which made me happy because my past 4 or 5 fill ups have been around 17-17.5.

With the canopy off and my bike in the back, it went down to 18 from 20. All highway. Still not bad for averaging 65-70mph.

Well, California smog law reads; anything aftermarket is illegal. Catback exhaust is ok but must be under 95db, and have cats in tact. No intakes (unless C.A.R.B approved with #), front mounts, BOV, catless pipes, larger throttle bodies....etc. When you go to the smog station to get your rig tested, they are "certified" and look under the hood, exhaust, etc and make sure it's all OEM. If it's not, they turn you away and WILL NOT smog test you.
