just replaced my fuel filter...last four tanks i got: 18.5 MPG, 15.3 (uphill from 2600' up to 7000'), 19.7, and 19.1. so that average is 18.2 MPG 85% was 65-85 mph. 15% idling down roads looking for deer haha.

that average is up from before the fuel filter replacement average of 17.0 MPG not bad for the 3.0...i'll get a better average in a few months of just city driving.

Pull the top off the carb, put in a 135 jet in the primary, a 190 in the secondary, get some ngk g power plugs gapped to .050, msd coil, and bump your initial timing (with no vac advance) to 18*. Should get you up around 20 mpg.

That was for yotaboy83

Alright thanks just wondering where I can get the coil and the jets. I'm great with mechanics just don't know where to get parts. Oh and I did just put new 31" tread wrights on if that helps at all.

190 on sec. sounds to much for me,what air bleeds you have?best bet is to install a wideband meter and your a/f at cruise and at wot.

I have a 99 4runner limited 2wd. I first bought this truck about 9 months ago and it didn't have the stock wheels. It had 15" stamped wheels with two different pairs of tires in the front and back. The catalytic converter had been removed and the check engine light was not plugged in. Now the tires at first where about an inch and a half shorter than stock 4runner tires (I can't remember the dimensions). With those tires and no cat I was getting what I thought was about 20 mpg city and nearly 26 mpg highway, but my speedometer of course was off, and my mileage was most definitely thrown off by the tire size. I didn't like there not being a cat, and the fact that the check engine light was unplugged kinda worried me. So, I went back to the dealer with a new cat that I purchased and asked him to have his mechanic weld it on for me and plug in the check engine light. The dealer complied and didn't charge me a dime. What's more he had a set of four 16" Toyota 4runner Alloy wheels with nearly brand new Michelin LTX tires on them (tires measure 265/ 75). I traded him my cheap stamped wheels and crap tires along with $200 for the 16" alloys and LTX tires. After having the cat welded on and the new wheels put on I noticed that my mileage decreased to something like 16 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. I didn't like this at all so I went to work and improved my truck's mileage beyond my expectations. What I did was all basic maintenance really but I will list below the specifics.

1.) Bought new NGK spark plugs and installed them (they are 2+... found out the truck had Bosch 1+ in it which is not recommended).
2.) Cleaned out the Throttle body and AIC with a simple throttle body spray and rag.
3.) Changed the fuel filter and air filter.
4.) Lastly I purchased a 32 oz. bottle of Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant with injector cleaner and Fuel conditioners (it's good for 100 gallons of gas and I've been using it for every fill up and the bottle is nearly gone now). This stuff really works and honestly I think it's the main reason that my mileage has increased so drastically.

My mileage in town is now about 290 miles per tank. I have a 14 gallon tank, so if you do the math I'm now getting almost 21 mpg in town. I had to go to Augusta, GA two days ago for a VA appointment and drove mostly on the highway and interstate. On the way there I got 350 miles out of 14 gallons of gas traveling North from where I live (it's a gradual uphill trip of about 386 miles). Going South, back to where I live, I got 366 miles to the tank (same 14 gallons). So, my highway mileage is now sitting at 25-26 mpg. I'm sorry to have written so much, but I wanted to explain how I got this mileage so others could try it too.
I recently installed the K&N fipk CAI, a magnaflow high flowing Cat, and a Flowmaster Super 40 series clone. I paid $202 for the K&N (at autoanything.com), and I paid $50 for the muffler, $20 for a 45 degree 12"x3" Tip, $12 for clamps, and $6 for muffler sealant paste. A friend and I used a MIG welder, standard cutter, and a metal grinder and installed the new exhaust ourselves (no leaks and great welds I might add).

I'm still getting the same gas mileage that I posted above. The intake and exhaust upgrades have improved my acceleration and throttle response... plus I can climb hills without the truck dropping into really low gears at high rpms. I live on an Island that's connected to mainland GA by a 4 mile long causeway that has two big bridges. Before these upgrades my truck would drop a gear and hit about 2,700 rpm to climb those bridges, but now it stays in the higher gear and maintains 1,900 rpms when climbing the same bridges. I think there is a definite gain in torque and a noticeble gain in hp. I still drive with a feather foot, but now the truck revs easier it seems, so I end up getting up to speed now a lot quicker than before. The intake and muffler also make the truck sound really mean... almost too mean according to my wife who likes to sleep in lol!

If I can't get this 15' Boston Whaler I've been looking at then I'll probably be Turbo Charging the truck with my friend (he custom builds race motors and chopper motorcycles, so yeah, I trust him). By the way... I'm still running Lucas Upper Cylinder lubricant about every 3rd tank.

Another couple good tips...

1.) If you have the ECT/PWR button turn it ON (this button allows the Gen 3's to utilize higher rpms faster when climbing hills or when trying to pass... it stands for Electronic Controlled Transmition). With this button off my truck was very sluggish so I would tend to use more foot on the gas to try to compensate. I started turning it on to go up hills instead of using the OD/Off button, and then I read a series of threads on here that said leaving it ON all the time gets a lot of people better mileage. I hold true to this line of thinking because, dispite the occasional increases in rpm your foot will not have to be so heavy on the pedal and you won't be dumping as much gas into the motor.

2.) Use the cruise control as often as you can. I use mine all the time, every day, as often as possible.

The oreilleys and Napa here in Bellingham both stock the blaster 2 coil and the jets can be purchased at either a performance shop or online. Most good parts stores will know where to get them too

And this setup was getting me about 23 consistently on my truck with maxxis bighorn 32x12.50 and 3.9's in my 81 shortbox

Alright thanks. 18* of timing just sounds like a lot to me that was a concern. I just wanted to be sure so i'm not wasting money. And is the bigger spark plug gap needed because of the higher compression head. Oh and last this will help power too because mine just feels like there is no power for some reason. Thank you so much for your help

The bigger plug gap can be used because of the better coil to jump more of a gap. More gap you have, the better ignition of air fuel charge and a little more fuel to help reduce detonation. More timing will always render more power. Hope that helps
