My mileage story

I have a 99 4runner limited 2wd. I first bought this truck about 9 months ago and it didn't have the stock wheels. It had 15" stamped wheels with two different pairs of tires in the front and back. The catalytic converter had been removed and the check engine light was not plugged in. Now the tires at first where about an inch and a half shorter than stock 4runner tires (I can't remember the dimensions). With those tires and no cat I was getting what I thought was about 20 mpg city and nearly 26 mpg highway, but my speedometer of course was off, and my mileage was most definitely thrown off by the tire size. I didn't like there not being a cat, and the fact that the check engine light was unplugged kinda worried me. So, I went back to the dealer with a new cat that I purchased and asked him to have his mechanic weld it on for me and plug in the check engine light. The dealer complied and didn't charge me a dime. What's more he had a set of four 16" Toyota 4runner Alloy wheels with nearly brand new Michelin LTX tires on them (tires measure 265/ 75). I traded him my cheap stamped wheels and crap tires along with $200 for the 16" alloys and LTX tires. After having the cat welded on and the new wheels put on I noticed that my mileage decreased to something like 16 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. I didn't like this at all so I went to work and improved my truck's mileage beyond my expectations. What I did was all basic maintenance really but I will list below the specifics.

1.) Bought new NGK spark plugs and installed them (they are 2+... found out the truck had Bosch 1+ in it which is not recommended).
2.) Cleaned out the Throttle body and AIC with a simple throttle body spray and rag.
3.) Changed the fuel filter and air filter.
4.) Lastly I purchased a 32 oz. bottle of Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant with injector cleaner and Fuel conditioners (it's good for 100 gallons of gas and I've been using it for every fill up and the bottle is nearly gone now). This stuff really works and honestly I think it's the main reason that my mileage has increased so drastically.

My mileage in town is now about 290 miles per tank. I have a 14 gallon tank, so if you do the math I'm now getting almost 21 mpg in town. I had to go to Augusta, GA two days ago for a VA appointment and drove mostly on the highway and interstate. On the way there I got 350 miles out of 14 gallons of gas traveling North from where I live (it's a gradual uphill trip of about 386 miles). Going South, back to where I live, I got 366 miles to the tank (same 14 gallons). So, my highway mileage is now sitting at 25-26 mpg. I'm sorry to have written so much, but I wanted to explain how I got this mileage so others could try it too.

Thanks!

Thanks a bunch, dstraub99runner. Very kind of you to throw out your hints. I just started adding Lucas' fuel system treatment (I think that's the same stuff...) to the tank I filled on sunday. We shall see what happens! Maybe quieter injectors?!

3.4 V6 4x4 1996 with 31's and about 16mpg city /hwy.
Clutch was slipping badly since I got the truck so hopefully it gets better at least on the freeway.

Interestingly I drove the truck till the clutch was gone I mean really down to the metal on both sides. It just stopped going and after replacement works great.

Love these toyota trucks.

Those are wheels from a 6 lug Tundra or Sequoia. I really like the way those wheels makes that truck look like a modern Tacoma. Good MPGs too TNR.

All I have is a cold air intake and I'm getting 19-20 mpg on average. If I'm riding the freeway all day I'd get more.
My truck is all stock.

1995 4runner, stock 22re, 31's, stock gearing. Just got 23.5 mpg on a trip to/from Moab, including 4 huge pass climbs and about 100 miles of offroading in Moab. Had to hit 2nd gear climbing the west sides of Vail and Eisenhower to get home but I'm stoked none the less! Should get better once I open up the exhaust.

1993 single cab short bed 4WD pickup with 200k miles running 235/75R15's on American Racing alloys. Stock engine and exhaust. 5 speed manual transmission. 19 mpg (60% around town and 40% highway).
Just added a K&N air filter and a 2.25-inch exhaust from the exhaust manifold back, including a new Magnaflow cat and muffler. This is my first tank of gas since the upgrade so it will be interesting to see what effect, if any, it has on fuel consumption.

'94 4runner, 2wd, 3.0 AT. Tires 235/75-15 Michelin LTX MS. Rest of truck bone stock with full tuneup about 10K miles ago. Best I've achieved since January is 20 mpg - worst was 14.5 mpg; average is about 15.6 mpg.
