Well, I have a '86 Toyotter truck with 22R-E, twin cases, stock case gearing, 38.5/12.50/15, and 5.29's. My gauge doesn't work but I'd bet on like 14-15ish. I hope it does but I can check it, speedo no worky either lol. Need the wire so I can tap into the rear case.

Thanks, Y.Satchel...

Very cool of you to take the time to do that. I just find it interesting/plus I'm curious if something is wonky at idle and around town, ya know?

Yeah, I mean, in town for me actually means.... 2 miles, up to 20 minutes in some cases. MOST often it's not that bad... But it's at least much worse that most places I've lived/visited where traffic is 10 cars within view in front and in the rear view? haha.... I have some video from the other day I have to load... Took me 40 minutes to go 4 blocks because of some STUPID project where they took a 3 lane street down to 1... A BUSY Street, Western Ave., Torrance-CA.

Anyway.... I'm doing a lil more testing on this... Been running the air all day(it's 90 or so, pretty warm for 50% humidity in L.A.)... But running it, really, to see the effect in town on mileage.

Yeah, I was shocked when I cleared high 23's/24 maybe on the highway! That's the best this thing has EVER got!

Always enjoy stopping into this thread and reading/getting a look into other peoples mileage.

Here's my mileage numbers:

Only city driving with AC: @12-13 mpg
City/hwy mixed with AC: @13.5-14.2 mpg
All highway with AC & headwind from Palm Springs to LA: 15.4 mpg
All highway with AC & tailwind from LA to Palm Springs: 18.3 mpg
All highway without AC & tailwind LA to Palm Springs: 19.37 mpg

Do these numbers make it seem like there's something wrong with the engine? I don't understand why city mpg's are so bad? Which one of these mods would help improve mpg's the most and by about how much:

1) ISR mod - $50
2) Crossover elimination $200
3) High flow offset Borla muffler $130

Or do I need to do all of them to really see a noticeable difference? By the way I am running 31x10.5x15 and the stock size is supposed to be 225x75x15. I've checked many times while driving on the freeway (by checking the distance to a certain city), and it's exactly 10% off. For example, if the odometer says I've done 100 miles, when calculating mpg's I use 110 miles.

Spent time yesterday looking for vac leaks to see if it would help my MPG. I ended up finding 2 vac leaks over at the VSV control unit, the factory vac plugs had rotted to swiss chesse -- also replaced some cruddy looking hoses in the same area.

Drove her today up the 15-S to Corona and came back(100miles mixed city/highway) ended up getting 15MPG. Lot better than 11mpg that I was getting, so I guess I am on the right path to get my 18-20mpg. Got more digging around to do....

Stock v6 3.0 auto, unknown gear ratio(2,500rpm @ 70ish mph), 33x12.5 A/T's.

EDIT: Just found my axle code is "G292" which by searching i come to the conclusion that there is suppose to be a 4.10 gear in there.

I did the basic trip odometer divided by gallons formula and came up that my 88 4Runner was getting 20mpg... but I'm doubting thats accurate, as my Speedometer is also reading way off. Says I'm doing about 80 but based on what the traffic around me is doing, I'm probably in the 60-65 range.

Tires are stock size, as are the gears as far as I know... guess I better see if the gears are actually 4.10's or not, or if the speedo gear ever got changed for bigger tires.

Not sure if that simplifies it or not.
Even stock speedometers are off...best way to do it is to use GPS to compare actual vs. indicated speed.

I had one back at the parents house, but just found out they sold it! Shame, it was a great Garmin off-road unit with topo maps for the West Coast installed.

Is there a good iphone app for this?

Yep but I wouldn't trust anything less than a 4S for an accurate speed measurement.

You can also use the mile markers on the highway. at 60mph you should cover 1 mile in 1 minute. you could also compare your odometer and see how close it reads a mile compared to the little green signs on the side of the freeway every mile. just some ideas. hope they help
