The exhaust comes up from the lower side on the block/crankcase and up into the downtube of the EGR valve.

What two little tubes are you talking about? The rubber vacuum hoses? Exhaust doesn't come through those. They operate the valve via vacuum routing.

Here's a diagram of how it works for Fed. and Can. emissions.

Yours would be Fed. unless you have a California vehicle.

Oh...that e'splains it. Sorry..... the later developments of emissions equipment tend to escape me sometimes.

Well, hopefully someone else will chime. I'm not terribly familiar with post '92 vehicles.

It gets dumped into the aft end of the intake manifold.

AFT = Rear. Those tubes on your exhaust manifold are air injection tubes.

Not all 22RE`s have those air injection tubes., my 86 4Runner doesn`t have them.

ok so these air injection tubes has nothing to do with the EGR right. How does the air injection work? Should my air injection tubes have carbon build up on them?

Well they are a form of EGR, the exhaust flows thru them to the intake, so yes there will be carbon inside them... Other than that I never did too much tinkering with mine, it worked and wasn't an issue.
