My '92 4Runner has Big O Big Foot ( Feet? ) tires which have 80,000 miles on them. I have no complaints about this tire except for performance on wet pavement ( I live in Seattle ); I'm considering a new set of the same tires - 30x9.5x15 - but have read also favorable reviews of the BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO and the Michelin LTX M/S. The 4Runner is my daily driver and sees use year round rough road/off road and in snow, occasionally, in the winter. I would like to hear feedback on these and any other tires worth considering.

I hear good things about the BFG's. Haven't heard anything 'bout the Michelins.

What kind of problem are you having in the wet?

 

bfgs or mich are great tires but the mich arnt that aggressive looking the mich mns a/t2 is a little more but still not as nice looking as the bfg a/t and the bfg was a little cheaper in my case ..i put 31s 1-.50s .15 on my runner locally for about 200 a tire on the truck... they fit great stock and loook sharp and are great in the snow... i have p235 before that BOO..

also note 32.11.50.15 mudkings which is a mich off brand fit stock too!!!

 

I too live in seattle and love the toyo a/t's. I have 31x10.50's on my 4runner and they work great in all conditions. I do some mild wheeling, driving the snow they are great, hardly have to use 4 wheel drive, no chains. I had them siped by les schwab and they are pretty sticky. they are quiet and smooth on the highway.

one downside:
toyo's, unlike the bfg's, only have a two ply sidewall, other than that, they are fantastic.

Personally if i were to get new tires, would bfg's a/t's, only because i can't get the toyo's in a 33x10.50-15.

 

michelin makes BFG the ltx m/s is a very good tire in rain/snow and they last forever, the bfg a/t is a good tire as well but i would get the mich.

 

do you have a source on that- that michelin makes BF Goodrich?

if you want decent, really cheap tires. 4wheelparts and les schwab have good warranties if you dont mind spending money.

the pro comp AT is decent too. id go with 31x1050, 30s looks puny

 

I bought General Grabber A/T2 from america's tire/discount tire (same company). They price match from tirerack.com which i found to have the lowest prices out of any other company on the net. America's tire quoted me like 200+ originally but matched tirerack.com at 90 each. The generals are all terrain but are snow rated and studdable along the outer tread. all reviews were excellent for snow, ice and wet. tread looks similar to the bfg's a/t. tread is almost 1/2" deep with (what i've seen personally) life of 40,000 down to half tread. that's with light off-road, daily and winter season. i have mine in 31x10.5 15s. has noticable road noise but what do you expect from a/t tire with fairly aggressive tread. i plan on getting another set when it's time.

I have a set of BFG A/t's, i like them, they wear great imho, mine have over 40,000 and are still in good shape, they are good overall, the only thing i have had problems in are mud and certain situations in deep snow. These are good tires imho, i haven't really had any other experiences with other brands, i would like to get the BFG muds or trxus muds. but we will see.

 

As far as BFG A/Ts go, the treads come off really easily on rock, they don't do good in mud, not great for sand either, and all 4 sets I've every owned wore pretty quick. Just dandy on the road, did well in the rain, and they're all right for the occasional "I'll take my slippered foot off the pavement for a quicky".

They're not the worse by any means, but there are MUCH better a/t's out there.

 

Yep. Running a set of 285/75/16 D/Muds and couldn't be happier.

 

In anything wet my Nittos have outperformed any BFGs I've owned in the past especially in the rain on pavement. The Nittos have solid water evac channels which the BFGs don't really have well defined ones.

 

If I had to buy another at (my bfgs are still doing well) I would get the yokohama geolander ats or the toyo open country, both are much better in the rain and I witnessed the toyos clear mud much better than the bfgats in the same hole this weekend on another yota. my .02

 

I will 2nd the Yok AT/S as my mom has them on her '99 and she really likes them but if you venture off the beaten path more than a few times then I still prefer the Nittos.

 

Anyone had the Cooper ST? Its more aggressive than the BFG A/T.

 

I like my Treadwright OTR Green Diamond's. Cant beat the price either.

 

By the way, there's a reason that everyone who has Treadwrights raves about them...

 

Also consider his truck is DD and ride,noise and treadwear would be a consideration and how much he goes wheeling.

 

My tires are surprisingly quiet. They have BFG AT carcasses and ride great. I was pretty surprised at how much bang I got for the buck.

 

I have to say, This winter was really really snowy where I live and I up graded to the BFG all terrians and the traction difference was night and day, BFGs are as great as everyone says. I have heard they are the best for avoiding hydroplaning on wet pavement. For a cheaper tire, I like the Yokohoma geolander A/T, but not as good on snow, but that is probably not a Seattle issue.
