22RE - Haltech Standalone EFI...Anyone?
The 22RE in my 1987 4Runner is getting tired. The rings/cylinders are a bit worn and I'm burning oil. Compression is down a bit. Drives fine and pulls okay but the engine has 200k miles on it and I'm thinking of rebuilding it. Probably a stroker with a cam and head that is probably too much for the Toyota EFI. Something similar to a LCE Stage 3 Torquer cam and a Stage 3 or 5 head with compression around 10:1. Getting rid of the AFM for a real MAP sensor would be great too.
Haltech's Elite 550/750 looks like a good choice and SNP makes a harness that adapts the 22RE engine harness to the Haltech computer that make it close to plug and play. Even comes with a tune to get you started and the self-learning takes over from there.
Price aside it looks like a great option. Anyone have experience with a setup like this?

I don't have anything to offer other than it sounds like a fun build that I'd like to follow.
There's a couple builds on another Toyota forum I'm on that have standalone ECU's. I just looked and they are not using Haltech unfortunately. One is a Mega-squirt and the other is using ECU Masters. I'm hoping you go forward with a build thread though. Good luck.
