I have a '98 4runner that I have been able to start for the past month by paddling the shifter back and forth from Neutral to Park rapidly - to make things more confusing, it would often start normally first thing in the morning. My first reaction was, because I could start by paddling shifter, it must be neutral safety switch. So yesterday, I replaced mine with oem switch. I installed with gear lever in neutral, aligned shaft and line on switch in the 12-6 vertical position . . nope. Could it be off (is the alignment that critical?) Now I am reading about bad starter relays, weak battery, bad starter . . . .down the rabbit hole. Any thoughts on what I described? Thanks!
