I bought an entire 95 4runner (still running fine) for $900 at the beginning of last summer so the deals are out there but u gotta watch it.

Spent all last summer swappin that motor in my 95 and it ended up comin back to bite me in the ass since the whole crank is knockin around. Sooo... now im back to the drawing board.

I just bought a new short block on ebay for $500 (plus $130 shipping and $200 core charge). I still have both engines (the original had a rod knockin loose) so ima start tearing that one down so I can use the parts on this new short block. This will be my first time rebuilding a motor so Ill be checking this thread frequently... plus i got some good mechanics on the farm to help me out if things get tricky.

What kinda paint did you use, what did you do to prep the areas painted, and how did you apply it?

on hold AGAIN...lmao, got the flywheel on, and that's about it.....

i need a new dowel pin thing for the passenger side cam sprocket..after that i should be able to get the timing belt on, fan bracket, timing cover, lower intake manifold..should be starting to get close to drop it back in

so i have a question...can somebody give me a rundown on how to make sure everything is in time when i get the timing belt on....pretty sure i get the process...just want to be sure.

and if anybody has any information on stuff to watch out for..anything and everything..i'd appreciate it!

Man, I did the exact same thing. Gates lists both types of tensioners as for the 3VZE, '88-'95, but they put 'w/spring tensioner' or 'w/hyd tensioner' in the description. Unfortunately, RockAuto followed this lame-brain specification, and I didn't pay attention when ordering, so I got the spring tensioner too.

Line up the three indexing marks on the two cams and the crankshaft....

Install the tensioners and water pump....

install the timing belt... I had to set the belt on the cam pulleys, around the tensioners and then get one or two cogs on the crankshaft pulley and then rotate the crankshaft to walk the belt on. It was that tight.

Then rotate the crankshaft a couple rotations and check the timing marks again.

Make sure they are all still lined up and you are good.

Do not worry about the marks on the belt.. .As long as the timing marks all line up you are good.. ( you will spend all day trying to get the marks on the belt to line up with the timing marks on the pulleys and you will end up pulling all your hair out, because it will never work)

okay guys..i've finally found time to update this thing....and i have nothing to update on...and i'm leaving again tonight for a job in Mustang, OK.

things i still need.

sensor and vacuum thingy(oh yea ) at the back of the lower intake manifold.
one of those dowel pins for my passenger side cam.

bought a new clutch because i needed throwout and pilot bearings, it was going to be $90 for the bearings..or like $130 for the clutch kit..so i got the kit lol.

those few things are the few things holding this project up!!!!!

i CAN NOT find the sensor i need that is at the back of the intake..so i'm prolly gonna head to a junkyard and see if i can get that and the vacuum dilly there.

the dowel pin will likely come from there too!

isn't it funny how such small things can hold up a project....

again..if anybody has any info on stuff for me to do before/while installing the motor..gimmie a holler!

This info is helping me as Im now getting into tearing everything apart so thanks dudes.

One question though, why is it so important to replace the pigtail on the knock sensor??

And yea Came I'm missing the same sensor as u for the back of the intake... they seem fragile since they broke on both of my motors.

yea it's probably very fragile due to the exhaust heat from the crossover..

i've found that sensor, the vacuum valve, and the dowel pin at a junkyard..my father is going to pull them so i'll have them next week.

that's the only thing keeping my from putting everything back together...this is horrible guys i hate waiting LOL

hmm..still haven't gotten any of the sensors...BUT i do have the pin for the camshaft.

so now i can put the belt on, get it in time, put the lower intake manifold on, idler, tensioner, other small things lol..but i'm going to leave it OUT of the truck for now until i get those sensors put on the back of the lower intake manifold..i want to have MAXIMUM access to them so i don't break em puttin em on.

How does the hydraulic tensioner work? because i'm lost...if i put the belt on (with the idler on too..and everything routed right) then the belt isn't going to be tight, unless the tensioner makes it tight..and the tensioner just flops around when i bolt it on?

the tensioner is like a cylinder with some oil to push the pin to tight the belt. the tensioner push the pulley.

so, it needs oil pressure to tighten the belt?

sorry but that sounds pretty dumb on Toyota's part LOL
