Have you jumped the signal wire at the starter? Are you getting a signal (B+) there when turning key to crank position?

the small wire that plugs into the starter. do you get voltage there when you turn the key on? if you make a jumper wire from the large terminal on the starter (the one coming from the battery) and touch it to the small terminal, will the starter spin? (I'm guessing it will since the parts people tested yours).

I received your PM, but decided to reply here instead.

forgot to ask if
it's a manual (did you hook up the clutch safety switch?)
or
it's an automatic (did you hook up the park/neutral safety switch?)

if you did and are still not getting voltage on the starter from the ignition switch, you might want to give this a look:

By "relay clicking" I assume you are referring to the CO relay in the passenger side foot well area. If so, that is normal. The only reason you hear it because the starter is not running, so it is a symptom but not the problem (which is the starter not running). You can do the simple voltage check described below to help isolate the source of the starter not running problem:

well it sounds like it is under the hood around the fuse box

If it is up front, that may be the starter relay, usually on the passenger side fender. A metal relay can typically labeled as "Starter Relay". If that relay clicks and the starter does not work, likely problem is burnt contacts in that relay or a poor voltage feed to it from the ignition switch. The voltage test will help tell you which.

ok well i tested the plug that goes into the starter and of course nothing, i traced the wire all the way up to the firewall and even tested it there and it is not getting any power but the rest of them are, a freind of mine suggested a ground strap that goes arond the motor mounts to ground the motor to the frame, i looked and looked and could not find what he was talking about, what is it and where might it be located?

Well, if there is no voltage to the starter solenoid, then the problem is not in the starter. Figure out why there is no voltage to that wire, it is needed to engage the solenoid which in turn makes the starter motor run.

Ground strap should be up by the passenger side motor mount, at least that is where is is on my '85. For a quick test to rule out or confirm grounding issues, grab a battery jumper cable and connect one end of the black cable to the battery "-" post and the other end of the black cable to the engine block down near the starter. If that helps, you have a ground problem, if it makes no difference, then you don't.

ok well he told us to try the jumper cable thing and it didnt make any difference, the crazy thing is that it was working fine before we dropped the other motor in and now nothing but like i said we tested the wire all the way up past the wiring harness and nothing
