Start problems

Ok, I have an 89 Toyota Pickup 5 speed, 4x4, V6. I am having issues with it starting. It keeps blowing the 30 amp fuse under the hood. It will run a while and then all of a sudden it won't start I'll be stranded. I have no clue where to even begin searching for a problem.

Without a manual, unless you physically trace wires connected to that fues, you;d be troubleshooting blindly. I hope someone can share a schematic so we can help troubleshoot.

Cheers

IGN fuse (7.5a), igniter, and injectors.

Since you're not blowing the (smaller) IGN fuse, you probably have a short in the ignition switch wiring (before the IGN fuse) or the wiring for the ignitor or injectors.

Also inspect back-up switch and wiring. If switch shorts to ground, or wire insulation wears out and wire shorts to ground, it could blow the the Ign fuse (verify with your truck's schematic - that is the case with 22R-E's). It could be intermittent because wiring harness could vibrate and make intermittent contact with chassis/tranny body.

I have actually figured out the problem. I decided to change the starter since in 260,000 miles it had never been replaced. Upon removing it, I noticed the small black wire that connects to the male spade (i believe it's called the remote wire) was broken. I replaced this wire with a heavier gauge one and changed the starter, as it was also fried, and now she starts like a champ every time. On another note, I thought it would be cool to put in a push button start. Not completely bypass the ignition, I'd still like to use the key for constant power. But where would I connect the new start wire on the starter, would it be the small black one or the larger wire that bolts on?

Push-button switch... like a Prius? LOL!

Seriously...
Battery plus to 30 -amp fuse - to switch - to that spade terminal. All gauge 12 wire.

Dorman makes an in line fuse holder that works well for this application, it is pn: 85663. It seems to tolerate heat well and uses 10 gauge wire...I've had standard fuse holders melt in under the hood applications. You can also use it as a connector by buying two fuse holders, this allows you to change your wiring easier. Also I didn't have good results using a standard/economy female blade connector, I had to salvage a heavy duty one from some used wiring. The standard one fell off the male spade too easily.

Not like a prius. Its going to be a foot switch mounted in the floor. And as far as heavy duty spades go I got those for days, wire too. Thanks for the tips.

I have a 91 4runner v6 3.0, distributor cap started "chirping" then engine died.
distributor cap and rotor were old. replaced them. no luck in starting. Checked for spark at coil while cranking, spark is erratic, not steady. any ideas?

Read the thread above?
Got manual?
Got multi-meter?
Let's start with above.

I've got a brain teaser for everyone. I'm a Ford guy and I don't know much about this import stuff. 1986 Toyota pickup, 22R carb motor. Getting plenty of fuel but will not start. It will turn over all day and nothing but I can roll it off and it'll start right up and start back all day as long as the motor stays warm. Replaced parts: Battery, starter and solenoid, distributer, rotor and cap, ignitor, coil, plugs and wires, ignition switch, pulled the valve cover and checked the valve adjustment and timing chain, bypassed clutch safety switch and someone told me to change the 80amp fuse that says Glow-at1 so I replaced that too. Any advice would be helpful. The truck only has 140K miles and runs like a champ but I can't roll it off where I work now and the engine cools off by the time my shift is over.

Almost sound like you're not getting ignition power when your key is in the crank position.

Yes, possibility.

O.P.,
(You replaced many things that would not have fixed the problem) But did you check for spark as mentioned in discussion above?
