'85 22R, not the original motor and don't know what year this one is.
After going many months without an operational temp gauge (I know not a good thing to do) am contemplating one of those easy to install aftermarket ones that go on the radiator hose. Going back over the issue and researching the great information on this forum I redid the grounding test to the sensor and my gauge still did not move indicating It is the gauge itself. I did not yet explore the gauge fix recommended here--- Definitive Temp Gauge Fix! - YotaTech Forums
But, after discovering this YouTube on locating the sensor--
- 2 minute video, it shows a sensor that I do not have and if the video is correct, I have not been testing the correct sensor. The only one I can find is the green temp sensor shown in the video. Is this one the sensor that operates my gauge?
Any comments greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Here is what the stock sender for the temp gauge looks like: https://22reperformance.com/22re-eng...nder-for-gauge
but an aftermarket sender might look different. The green and grey capped senders are temp senders, but not for the gauge. Usually the sender is somewhere in the intake or thermostat housing; I think location varies year to year. In the video you posted it is in the block, which I don't think is typical. Installing an aftermarket gauge with the sender in the radiator hose won't let you know your thermostat is stuck closed until it is too late. It might be less trouble to get the stock gauge working than to set up an aftermarket one, although the aftermarket ones are more accurate.
You might want to take your air cleaner off and upload photos of your intake manifold and see if someone can point out the temp sender.
OldBlueMidnight,
Many thanks for your input. I simply cannot find another sensor on this truck -- only the one below the oil filter and that has to be the oil sensing unit. Awhile back I did the EGR delete thing and took off a bunch of stuff. I am wondering if the sensor was integrated into that somehow. I may be forced to do an aftermarket thing.
Here's another pic of a 22R intake, with the sender installed, lower left of pic.
It's just the standard sender with the single spade lug on it. They are about $15-$20 at most part stores. They may not stock it & have to order it in, but they can get you one. Rock Auto has them as well.
Extra tip - This sender comes with an o-ring installed for sealing to prevent coolant leaks.. DO NOT use teflon tape or anything else on the threads. The sender electrically grounds through the intake manifold & if you use teflon tape or anything else on the threads, your temp gauge still won't work.
I did find it. Giant thanks for the excellent photo. That is where it was hidden--up against the fuel pump.
I been looking at wires going to the upper block to find the sensor and there were none. The sensor wire must have broke off at the sensor while doing my EGR delete. I found a yellow/green stripe wire with nothing attached and when grounded out my temp guage pegged out. So the gauge is good and when connected to the sensor my gauge worked. Did not go far up, but at least I have a gauge now. Would buy you guys a beer, or a case of beer if I could.
Glad it was some help. Good work on getting it all tracked down & working. If that pic of your temp gauge is with the engine at full operating temp (choke fully open, engine at low idle), that's exactly where it should be. The 20R's & 22R's in my experience always seem to run at that "1/4" mark on the gauge.
No beers for years now but I do sometimes pine for a really good Orange Nehi.
PS 514K on the odometer? Nice. You're closing in on my current 585K on my '78 Longbed.
Not really a beer drinker either, but thought some offering was appropriate.
That odometer is correct. The old girl and I have been around the block a few times. . I do remember the temp gauge did not go very high.
Congrats on your 585K!.
Thanks. Still trying to put more on it too. Just finished (in the last 2 weeks) all 4 ball joints, all 4 tie rod ends, & will be doing Pitman Arm, Idler Arm & lower Steering Box oil seal within the next week. Will finally have firm, precise steering. Will prolly will forget how to drive it with that going on. :^D
