Transmission ID

Hafa Adai (hello),

newbie here, but need advice from any and all my YOTA experts! I have an 84 YOTA, 2wd, 22r Carb, and 5 speed trans. The tag in my engine bay states YOTA is supposed to be equipped w/W42 which is a 4speed. Obviously the trans was swapped out!

question: where on the trans or what way or how to identify what trans I got? In advance, I appreciate all and any advice given!

I'm not great on this but here's what I have. My best guess is that it's either a W50 or a W56. I'd think more that it's a W56. You can check the transmission for an ID number to get some idea of it. Here's how it breaks down:

This will at least give you some idea of the date it was made. Here's the rest of the info from the site I got that from: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/http://tcase.rsgear.com/articles/2001_06.pdf

Wiki also has some info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_W_transmission#W40

And there is Marlin Crawler. If there is anything to know about Toyota transmissions for 4runners & trucks they would know: https://www.marlincrawler.com/transmission

thank you, I will definitely look into this. Also I forgot to mention, my speedometer don’t work and when I went to check why - connection on passenger side of transmission is for sensor and not cable. Idk if this can help for ID’ing the transmission as well! Appreciate your help!

From what I can tell from parts listings, it looks like Toyota switched from a speedo cable to a speed sensor for 1985 & newer pickups.

If it is a 2wd 5 speed, it should be a w55. Don't know of any 4 speeds after 1982 or3. The 4 speeds were an L designation as far as I know

with what you stated, I should be able to switch my gauge cluster that will take an electronic sensor and connect to trans right? From an 85 and newer pickup!
