22re to 22r 1987 4Runner
I’m looking to replace the 22re that’s in my 4Runner with a ‘82-83 22r. I’m replacing since my 22re spun a rod bearing and I need to start over, and there’s a good deal on an early 22r. I’ve read that I will need a new distributor, lower fuel pressure, and possibly a different exhaust manifold. Will my wiring plug into this setup or will I need a new harness? What else do I need to do this swap?
thank you

I've been away from these engines for a while now so look into what I'm going to suggest. I "think" you can use the short block of the 22R but, I'm not positive. Or maybe use what you can from it to build your 22RE up if you just can't find another 22RE.
Sure you can put the 22R in but you're going to have to make a few changes. Including the wiring. It would be easier and maybe cheaper in the long run to fix or replace what you have with the same engine. Only you can decide what your budget and timeframe is.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
