Yup, i let the kitty out of the bag. I just ordered a TJM 17 for my 4runner a few days ago from Schaefer and it will be here in a few weeks i've searched now for 2 hours on the forum for install advice and thanks 00runner and midiwall for tips and pics of the install. brad: i will double check the bumper's clearance measurements and the weight question when i receive mine.

there is one thing that is puzzling me: in this picture, midiwall recommends that you remove these tips so that the T17 will be able to fit. however, brad does not mention this at all:



my question is, "how far do you cut this tip off?" i vaguely recall someone having pics of the spot where you cut and i think that special someone also welded on a plate to cover the hole.

2nd question is "will cutting off the tip make it unusable for re-mounting the stock bumper?"

I dont know if this applies to the TJM or is only for the ARB.
I am sure Brian or Andy will chime in.

 

That only applies to the ARB bars.

I've installed 3 TJMs and never had to cut anything off to mount them up, I've done a 96, and two 97s and I've never seen those ends like that. I know things changed in 99 if that is the year Midiwall has I'm not sure, but I think your safe with your 98. Good luck and get us some pics once it's on.

bob, looking at this thread (https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/arb-bull-bar-install-72306/) rowdy discovered that those rounded ends are only bolted on and all he did was unbolt them. granted he is mounting an arb, but maybe the frame ends are the same for all 96-98?

 

when i put mine on my '96, i could unbolt them.... you should be able to as well?

 

yeah, midiwall (mark) confirmed that the tips can be removed w/ a extended 12mm rachet, so no cutting required. nice.

update... Just to be clear, when I say "these end points need to come off" on my web page, I didn't mean to imply they had to be CUT off.

yeah, that was my assumption because i *thought* i saw a write up where they cut off those ends and welded on a cover.

yeah, i remember reading your write up mark and assuming you meant cut off, probably b/c i have read about installs of ARBs where people DID cut the ends.

 

oops... Sorry about that guys, I'll change the caption on the pic.

I think that you have to cut them off for 2nd gens? Or maybe it was in the case of an ARB. I remember seeing that soemwhere as well, and was worried about it when I did mine, but it's just a bolt.

ahhh... thats the reason why you sold me the shackle hangers!!! LOL should look awesome on your ride when its done bro!

 

I can't tell for sure from your pic but it looks like your talking about the bumper crush bar. You can actually take that whole piece off as it is not needed with the TJM. I have the T-17 on my 2000 and no cutting was required.

 

When I installed Localmotions TJM two months ago, I unbolted the two nubs. Save them if you want if you go back to stock. You will reuse the threaded hole from the nub fto tighten the TJM bracket. Easy as pie
