88 4Runner build

So I've been looking for a 1st gen 4Runner for three years, ever since I got rid of my first one. And I finally found the perfect one for the perfect price. I traded my hoopdie ass ranger for it haha. It's a 22re five speed. That's about as perfect as I could get.

The only problems I've found so far is a couple rust spots. And the guy tried to do some body work with spray foam?

The biggest and most confusing problem, is it had a little smoke to it. White smoke. Which I figured the head gasket could be going. But I took up and tested out the for wheel drive. Only to find out that 31's and open diffs don't get you through the same holes 37's and lockers do. So when my buddy came to pull me out. I was kinda raggin it to get out and it started smoking awful. Like to where my buddy hooked to the other end of the chain couldn't even see the runner. Once I got it out it was sputtering real bad and didn't want to stay running. I only assumed the head gasket was done. The next day after work I fired it up and not a puff to be seen? I checked the oil, no water or coolant. Checked the coolant, no oil. I drained the oil and put new in. And the oil was just black. No milky brownish oil or anything. I'm stumped like hell and have no clue why it was smoking so bad or sputtering. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
