Rebuild or 22R to 22RE swap?

I just bought a One Owner, always garaged RUST FREE 1986 truck (4x4,22r) off of my wifes uncle. He had the top end rebuilt (valve job, HG and timing chain) about six months ago. Then a couple of weeks ago the motor locked up on him. He took the head off and all the pistons are OK (bearing most likely). He then sold me the truck. I also have a 1987 with a GREAT 22re that has been totaled. Should I do a down and dirty rebuild on the the 22R (bearings, rings, oil pump)that is already in the 86 or swap engines/wiring/tank-pump-lines with the 87? (hard swap???) Thanks for any info!

doesn't matter, they're both the same engine other than the manifolds. i'd rebuilt it just to know exactly what's inside of it

If you do the swap you need to careful of all the senors & distributor. The distributors are different between the two. Also the 22r doesn't have the location for the knock sensor. Other than that it isn't too bad

nope, since we're talking about post-85 engines, the long blocks(everything from the valve cover to the oil pan, except manifold) are exactly the same.

you are right about the distributors, just swap yours in the other engine if you go that route.

If his truck is an 86 shouldn't it be the 22re already. All the trucks in canada were re's after & including 85???

in 4x4s in north america the last year of the 22R was '87, and '90 or '91 for the 2wd.

I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure the last year of the US 22r was 1989. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the opinions. This part (above)will not matter as I would be swapping the entire 22re engine into the other and not just the efi parts. I am leaning towards doing the rebuild and leaving this truck all original. It is quite a piece of history. Unmodified from day one. I can always build the 22re for my 4-runner. THANKS!
