Modified 22R seems to lack power
Here is the problem. I have an 84 toyota 4runner w/ 4" lift, 4.88 gears 33" tires. The motor is a freshly rebuilt with heddman header, 268 torker cam, DUI ignition, weber 38/38 carb and an offenhauser intake manifold. I took it out on the road last night for a little road test and was sadly disappointed in the power. I drove it open header just for the test, I have a new 2 1/4" high flow cat and flowmaster super 44 that I am having installed this week. It seemed to take for ever to build up to highway speed (60 MPH). Am I expecting too much? I had an 87 4X4 pickup for 11 years and I remember it having a lot more power, and it was completely stock. I would appreciate any input you all may have.

Not sure internally what was done with the motor. Bought it from a guy that built it for his rock crawler and lost interest in it before he got the truck finished; Supposedly he spent 5K on the motor, but I doubt that story. He sure spent the money on bolt-on parts, I also got an alum. radiator w/ electric fans and a 4 speed trans. with Marlin Crawler gears which I have not used. Did I make a mistake going with the super 44?

Thanks for the input, I will update when I get the exhaust put on. Can anyone give me a suggestion on a good muffler and should I go smaller than 2 1/4". Want to maximize the power since this will see a lot of highway cruising. Thanks.

Im sorry, but IMO backpressure will not hinder an engine that much. It certainly won't drop power as the OP described. I would say make sure your timing is spot on, and fuel delivery is up to par. If it truly is freshly rebuilt and even has some minor mods done to it, it should get out of its own way easily. 4.88 gears and 33" tires puts you close to stock gearing, so it would feel fairly normal.

i had the same problem with mine, i have a 22r with a 261 rv cam and when i got it it had no power whats so ever, after i got my exhuast put on and started driveing it it got better and better, it might just be motor break in, did you break you cam in? let it idle for an hr in your front yard. then take it on about a 20 mile run, mine had alomost no power for the first 500 miles. then it got better and better, as of now ive got 2500 miles on the motor and i love it. do your oil change in 500 miles also, you dont want break in metal inside a freshly rebuilt engine.
