Differential bearing questions.

I am putting 5.29 in my 1985 4runner.

I am replacing all the bearings.

Question is what is a good bearing?

I see them form 18.00 to 60.00 +

I want a good bearing but don’t know what to buy ?

Timken
National
ETC….

I have the bearings for the pinion that came with the install kits.

Koyo or Timken in my opinion...

Did you get a master install kit for your gear set-up?
They will come with everything for the rear diff except axle seals and axle/wheel bearings... so essentially everything for the 3rd member.

replace all the bearings...master install kit would have saved you some head aches...
and when you removed the carrier bearings you marked them left and right, right?

I am setting up two carriers to put in my 1985 4runner ” not me someone who does this for a living “

Pull out the carries with 4.10s and put in the a carries I am setting up with 5.29 so I can do a simple swap” not pull out and build and put back in. just swap them out.

I have 2 new 5.29 ring and pinions.
2 minor install kits “ pinion bearings ,shims, crush collars”

I do have 2 used carriers.

I do not want to reuse the carrier bearings.

The local parts stores are full of dumb people.

Unless they can look it up on their electric catalog they can’t find it. nor do they have a clue how to use a book.

I do not want to buy a master install kit.

I am looking for OEM quality or better.

I would like Timken or OEM.

I have looked online and see several numbers just looking for confirmation.

I thought all the 4 cyl 8" Toy carriers were the same. For certain year ranges anyway. What are the online sites and what are they listing as options?

You can be a purist or a realist. I've used National bearings, plus all the others, for years without issue.
Pinion bearings need to be set up correctly or failure will occur, regardless of the name on the bearing box. Incorrect preload, sloppy installation, contaminated surfaces is what kills bearings.

Odd there is no carrier bearings. Try randys ring and pinion and get the yukon one's. I work at a dealer and put 2 together with factory bearings and races, and then put two together with a yukon kit and they were the same make. I cant remember the brand though. You get what you pay for.
