HELP!!! altimeter/inclinometer wiring

i just found a 85 sr5 inclinometer/altimeter for my base model 85 4runner and plan on installing it soon, i need to know what i should wire it to for the backlight and where it is located to wire. i plan on putting the module above the air vents on the dash (stock location). also i plan on getting a dash clock too, where should that be wired to???

i have also replaced the base model gauges with the sr5 gauges and replaced the oil pressure sending unit but have not done the fuel sending unit and it is bouncy, i know that it is located in the fuel tank, but do i need to drain and drop the tank to get to it or is there an easier way?????

Did it come with a plug on the end. I have seen (IIRC) some with plugs. If so there might be a plug in the harness in the dash somewhere. Maybe???

no plug but if i can find an aux one in the harness i will get a plug from napa, its just 2 wires. but the other end has a plug to the module, so i might be able to find a complete cable with two plugs somewhere.

I'm not sure I understand...so you have 2 sets of wires coming out? I guess 1 would be for the 4x4 lights and the other would be for the dash lights for night.

idk about the tank unit needing to be changed but if it has to, lift up the
back seat (tilt forward) lift the carpet and you will see a like a 1x1 foot
square with a bunch of screws around it, it drops right into the tank if
I remeber correctly from the junkyard

I have an '85 4Runner SR5 and my tank gauge does the same thing. That's the way it's made, the sending unit doesn't have a resistor for the gas gauge. The hookups were different on mine from an '86. I got a fuel tank, pump, and sending unit out of an '86 and the sending unit wiring harness connector was different than mine. My 4Runner was built in Dec. '84, and they used a different style gauge and connector. The connector on mine was a 2 prong and the one I got with the tank was a 3 prong. You will just have to look at yours to see.

You will have to drop the fuel tank to get to the sending unit. If you fold up your passenger rear seat, there is an access panel, but you can only get to the fuel pump. The sending unit is at the rear of the tank.

Hope this helps!

I have an '85 truck, built in October '84. The SR5 Gauge cluster I bought plugged right in, but I never got the Oil and Temp gauges working. Ended up going with after market for those. As far as the Fuel gauge, I haven't had any issue.

On the question for the Inclinometer, I purchased the same thing a while back and it came with a mounting bracket and power plug. The guys at the parts place told me to plug it directly into the back of the Cigarette lighter. The stock plug goes there. But some people like to wire it into the gauge lights and dimmer switch. I'm probably going to do the same.

i just bought a used inclinometer and the plug has only two wires. a power and ground. it plugs in the back of the inclinometer and then behind the stereo and ashtray there is a gray set of plugs that powers the cigarette lighter. the factory inclinometer wiring harness is essentially a "T" that you plug into the gray connectors.

Exactly!

But if you wanted, you could route the power over from the dimmer switch and be able to dim the lights on the Inclinometer as well.

Toyota made a sub-harness that plugged between the inclinomter and the heater control light wiring.

Not sure if you can get that sub-harness any more. My dealer told me I bought the last one in the USA but ???

When I put one in my 89, there was a plug in the factory wiring harness that it connected to, but like others have said, you can hard wire it too.

Don't know if you've done the fuel tank or not yet but wanted to mention, the access panel under the back seat is for the pump only. The gauge sending unit is under the floor board further back so you do unfortunately need to drop the tank to get to it.

I know this is a wicked old thread but just thought I would add...I installed an inclo/tilt/alt today and wired it up. If you wire it into pins 5 and 6 on the B harness (center harness) on back of the speedo
cluster, she will come on with the dash lights. Cheers.

I just hooked my lights up to my clinometer tonight an took my clip off the meter, took a two wire (speaker wire) and spliced it into my climate control unit. It worked great but make sure you dont bump the light off button! (slaps self on head!!!!)
