22r new motor?

So after buying my first car (truck) and after fixing a ton of stuff on it it decided to self destruct. Making horrible noises and only running on one or 2 cylinders. The truck is an 82 with 101,000 miles but when I pulled the motor I noticed it was an 85. I feeling that the motor it has now prolly has a little more than 101,000 miles on. The block is rusted really bad and it looks like they used silicone gasket maker instead of a head gasket which I dint think was possible to work for even a second. I need a new motor. I want to rebuild this one myself but I have of budget of maybe 1300. I was going to use all egnbldr parts but I was at 900 without even looking at the head really or any of the machine work. Then I saw davez performance with a full rebuild for 1500 out the door. I really just want something that will be reliable that I won't have to worry about for years to come. I also see Craigslist adds for 1300 for rebuilt 22r including install, oil, distributor cap and rotor, plugs, everything. I just don't know what to do. Any ideas or even suggestions of where to get a good motor for not more than 1500?

If you are wanting to buy a complete rebuilt motor, buy one from a reputable company that's my advice.

I'd first look for a local shop that can do a rebuild or replacement for you before ordering from a distant shop or buying a potential basket case from CL. It might cost a little more than 1500 for a rebuilt motor locally, but shipping an engine to you will add to cost. As far as motors off Craig's List: I'd only do that for cores. Unless the CL engine in question passed visual inspection from a mechanic and a leak-down test told you its compression numbers, I wouldn't even waste the time installing it.

If you do go the Davez route, they're a good company.

Best cam?

So I have decide to go with davez and he has two options for upgraded cams. A 260 lift and a 268 lift camshaft. Out of these two which would give me the best power across the entire rev range. It would mostly be a daily driver so it would also need to be good on gas. Or is the stock cam the best option for what I'm looking for?

I’ve rebuilt two of my 22re’s myself and it was pretty easy. The thing a lot if shops don’t realize when they rebuild them is the unusually close piston-to-Wall clearance, .008 - .0015. My first rebuild, the machinist didn’t follow my request for that clearance, he biredcthen honed it time 3 thousandths. And it started piston slapping at 20,000 miles. Now I’m at 50,000, and the slap is still about the same, altho it is using a quart of oil every 3,000, altho that might be due to driving too fast.
I’d rather spend another thou and get it done locally if you can find a good shop to rebuild it. The second one, they recommended just buying a new head from China, those heads are always bowed when you get them off, and if you mill them flat, the three cam journals aren’t in line and to get them lined up means boring them and putting oversized bearings in, and it’s cheaper to but the Chinese one.
Those engines I think are worth rebuilding with a lot of new parts, new cam, rockers, radiator. My crankshafts were both like new, they must be hardened steel. I just had them polished and put the same size bearings back in. I bought me a dial bore indicator and made sure my second block got bored/honed to specs. They’re both running like new

I got that wall to piston spec wrong. It’s .0008”. To
.0015”. That is. 8 ten-thousandths to one and a half thousandths

I rolled the dice when I rebuilt mine last year and was very pleased with the complete head I bought off ebay. I can't be 100% certain but they say they're domestic. Same goes for the timing chain cover I broke. I forgot about the hidden bolt down in the oil well.
